Your Questions About Dog Training Classes Denver
Lizzie asks…
yorkie questions!??!!??! :)?
I have some yorkie questions.
I am getting one in about four months.
are they good with other dogs?
cats?
grooming?
price?
health problems?
I live in the denver area, have any recommendations on where I should get one?
anything else you want to let me know!
oh yeah and any websites or chain stores that carry cute dog clothes?
I dont want to dress my animal, but those stores always have the cutest leashes & collars!
admin answers:
They are good with other dogs if they are well socialized as a puppy with the other dogs. If they are not properly socialized as a puppy then they can be snappy towards other dogs. Since they are a small dog they can easily be afraid of larger dogs if they are not introduced to many as a puppy. Taking your dog to a puppy class at a dog training school would be best. They learn to play with other dogs and they learn body language of other dogs. Your puppy should be in puppy class before it is 16 weeks of age so that you don’t miss the puppy’s socialization period.
Whether a dog is good with a cat depends on a couple of things. First is whether or not the cat knows how to socialize with a dog. If a cat doesn’t know how to read a dog’s body language, then the cat will run and be chased. If the cat knows to just stand still, the dog almost always will just sniff the cat and walk away since it isn’t any fun when its not moving. It also depends on the dog. Some dogs have absolutely no interest in cats. Others think cats are the greatest toy in the world. My dog was raised with a kitten at the breeder’s that he used to wrestle with. Now he thinks all cats want to play with them, but most don’t since he can get overexcited and may look threatening to cats who don’t like dogs. If you already have a cat and you are getting a puppy, keep the two separated at first. Slowly introduce your puppy to the cat and make sure you are in control of the situation, so that if your cat gets to frightened you can separate them again. You can also start letting the cat in the room while you are playing with and distracting the puppy. You will also want to teach your puppy to come to you even when he is approaching the cat.
Yorkies need to see a professional groomer every 6 weeks to 3 months since their coat gets very long quickly. If you want to keep the long coat, be prepared to brush it multiple times a day since it gets knotted very easily. A puppy cut on the yorkie is cute though and is much easier to take care of.
For a purebred yorkie it is usually $800 to $3000, but it could be more or less. If you go to a reputable breeder it will probably be somewhere in the $1200 to $2000 range.
Yorkies do have a tendency to have early tooth decay. Make sure to brush their teeth and continue to keep an eye on the teeth. If there is a lot of tartar, get the teeth cleaned by a vet so that they stay healthy and do not need to be removed. Oral health is very important for dogs (like it is for humans). Yorkies also can have very fragile bones. You need to be careful that your yorkie doesn’t fall down the stairs, off the bed or couch. Many people will get little steps so that the yorkie has a way off the furniture rather than jumping since this can injure them.
If you want a puppy then get one from a breeder. Search for breeders in your area. If you want an adult dog or are open to rescuing a puppy, then look into breed specific rescues in your area. You can find all of these just by searching google with your city.
Yorkies are good little dogs. They can be a little yappy or snappy if not brought up properly and not socialized with lots of different dogs, people and situations.
Bark and Fitz is a small dog company and they sell some really cute items. I’m not sure how much clothing they have, but they definitely have a wide variety of leashes and collars. I’m not sure if their inventory is on line, but there are quite a few of their stores around these days.
Good luck and enjoy your yorkie!

admin answers:
Your best bet is to give them a call. They sound like they have a better program then the box stores. Also ask about the training techniques used and the experience of the trainer(s). You might want to sit on a class or two also to get a feel for the type of training. Sounds like a good overall program for household training.
Mark asks…
What do you think of the class action lawsuit against Petland for selling sick puppy mill dogs?
The Humane Society is going for a class action lawsuit against Petland for scheming to sell sick puppies bred in filthy puppy mills and conning customers into believing the puppies came from reputable breeders.
Last year Denver Dumb Friends League got 90 breeding poodles from an awful puppy mill in Oklahoma. We got one of those dogs and while she is precious, she was two years-old and a nervous wreck because she had never been around people, had never been in a building, had never been off of the dirt ground, hadn’t been fed for long periods of time and had to fight among the other dogs crammed in her cage for what little food was available. She was never potty trained and the dogs lived in urine soaked dirt and fecal material. She had a large injury on her rear-end where it appears a dog bit her when fighting for food. When the dogs were rescued, the rescuers found that the live dogs were eating the dead dogs, so it makes sense to me that another dog decided my dog was fair game for dinner. Her fur is not going to grow back on that spot.
Four months later and my dog has nearly completed potty training. She is still uneasy around people, but she no longer shakes. She still can’t be near other dogs, even when dogs show signs of friendliness. My dog was even afraid of a twelve year-old teacup poodle with no teeth. She may always be afraid of dogs. She tries to hide her food and is afraid of eating in front of anyone. We now feed her outside, while we remain inside, so she can eat without fear. Her digestion system is finally returning to normal.
So, excuse me for being a bit biased, but I think this lawsuit is a good thing.

admin answers:
Stopping puppymills is always a good thing but the HSUS has no reason to sue, they did not buy sick puppies. It seems to me it is just another way for the HSUS to profit from the abuse of animals, just like they did when Michael Vick was arrested.
The only way to stop puppymills and BYBs is for people (consumers) to realize their pets are not disposible and keep them for the duration of their lives instead of just while they are small, young, cute and convenient. If they did this there would be no market for puppies so there would be no profit and it would end puppymills and BYBs so it is the people(consumers) that keep puppymills and BYBs in business allowing them to subject animals to horrible conditions and abuse.
People need to wake up and stop the atrocities, not rely on PETA or the HSUS to stop it for us because in the end we may not like the outcome of their way!!

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Sensitive Stomachs
Sandra asks…
Has anyone heard of Timberwolf organic dog food?
I have been researching the internet to find the right food for my doggies. I want to get the timberwolf organic dog food, but I dont know which kind to get? the ocean blue one seems to be the most popular, but which would you recommend I get? if you dont care for this brand of food please tell me why and recommend something else. thank you for your help.
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
additional question:
is timberwolf organics a good food for cats as well?
admin answers:
Timberwolf Organics is one of the best brands of dog food available. In terms of quality of ingredients, it can only be rivaled by few others.
The only problem I can think of is that if you have a dog with a sensitive stomach he or she might find it hard to tolerate the richness of a food like Timberwolf. This is food is also very nutrient/ingredient dense so you only have to feed small amounts — it is high in calories. Certain Timberwolf formulas are also high in fat and protein. For the average adult dog, a maintenance formula is best. The high protein/fat formulas are more suited to very active dogs.
I would recommend the Ocean Blue, Dakota Bison or Southwest Chicken for the average dog.
Sharon asks…
what is the best brand of dog for for pups and dogs?
im am feeding my almost 8 week old pup purina original kind
then is science diet good ?
admin answers:
If it is financially possible go with a organic and grain free diet. If grocery store brand is what is budgeted for, go for Purina One Salmon and Sweet Potato (sensitive stomach formula I think). If there is room to spend, look into Orijens, Pinnacle, Taste of the Wild, Merrick, and even Blue is not a half bad food.
Remember to make your diet change only 25% every 5-7 days, so essentially it should take you just under a month to change foods.
Lizzie asks…
dog has really bad gas?
I know this is kind of a sillier question but still….
Has anyone found any like natural remedies to help with a gassy dog?
My dog‘s food (Innova… which i’ve heard other people say this is a side effect) is causing her to get really horribble smelling gas.
I do not want to change food because she has a really sensitive stomach, she loves this food, it gives her tons of energy, and this is the only complaint.
Just wondering if anyone out there has found anything that has helped their dog.
admin answers:
Low fat plain organic yogurt. One spoonful per meal. It helps during the digestion process, when the kibble is being broken down and releases air.
I have been using this with my dog for a long time and he has no gas.

Your Questions About Dog Training Colorado
Daniel asks…
Should i feel guilty for wanting another dog?
I use to live in colorado and i moved to pennsylvania. When i did i had to sell my dog, tip. He was the coolest beaggle. He would climb trees, hunt, and jump fences an get on my roof. Im saving for another dog bcuz i cant stand being without a dog but should i feel guilty for wanting another dog when he was so loyal and protective of me?
admin answers:
They most certainly allow Beagles in Pennsylvania …. You did NOT have to sell your dog because you moved.
Do not get another dog until you are ready to make a life time (for the dog) commitment to the dog. You don’t sell a dog because they are inconvenient.
Only when you are prepared to commit to the dog for its lifetime should you get one. That means – if you move, the dog goes with you. If it is sick, you take it to the vets. If it develops some bad habits, you train it.
A dog depends on you. If you move, you make 100% sure that the place you buy/rent will allow dogs.
A dog should be a member of your family, not something easily disposed of when you get tired of it.
Lisa asks…
Should I fly the dogs or send them by train? What can I do?
I need to get my boyfriends (ex, maybe) dogs back to him in colorado. I live in florida. I read that is it very unsafe to fly the dogs, but there are no trains to take them either. If I did fly them, what would I need to do so? HELP!
admin answers:
I flew my cats from Maryland to Frankfurt, Germany and they did fine. It depends on the time of year (Feb for me) and the airline. Contact a few airlines and see what they say. It may cost you an arm and leg to do so. I paid 100 dollars a cat but thats when I was flying. I think alone it costs more.
William asks…
How can i get my puppy to “go” on the puppy pad?
my dog goes on the floor, hes a puppy but its gross i need him on a puppy pad desperately plz help!
admin answers:
Hi, I have two small dogs that are trained both to use their litter box or to go outside. If I’m home they go out. If I’m not they are confined in the bathroom with their beds and water and with their litter box. So their boxes are just large storage box (maybe 2’x3′ or a bit smaller) with puppy pad in the bottom – I use just a few layers of newspaper now. All the pet stores sell a spray product that leaves a scent (you can’t smell it though, thank goodness), which tells the dogs, this is where go to pee or poo. I guess the scent must be like that one spot in the yard they always go to. Anyhow, it is a bit pricey, but it takes very little and then after a short training time, you no longer even need to use it, they just know where they go. I still have 3/4 of the original bottle I trained them with so start with the small size. So the girls never have accidents in the house – either ask to be let out or use the boxes.
To those who say if you litter box, or pad train a dog, it will go all over the house, it just isn’t true. I guess if you are careless in training then perhaps dogs just think they can go anywhere. But if you are careful and use this spray to help them get the idea, then they just go in the box, not everywhere they want. I think the puppy pad inside the ‘box’ helps them to define the space they are suppose to use and they learn to better ‘aim’. Also with the plastic storage box, it is easy to spray with disinfectant and wipe clean should things ‘runith over’. Both little girls are meticulous with their dual routines and don”t go everywhere around the house – just outside or box..
The two dogs are tiny, and just don’t have bladder enough to last very long although they are adult. In the winter, I have a patio umbrella set-up near the back door. I ‘scoop’ the snow under it so they have a grass place outside to go too. They are just too small to plow their way through the snow and in Colorado we have a lot of snow! Ha ha
Anyhow, look for that scent spray and it helps completely. It is sold right next to the spray that is used for “DONT pee or poo here”.
Good Luck.

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Amazon
George asks…
how much does it cost for an adopted parrot?
it’s probably going 2 be a macaw 😛 plus i need suggestion on a tropical colorful bird… hehe 😀
admin answers:
That depends. Most shelter charge something called a re-homing fee, which covers the costs they incurred while the bird was in their care. Our amazon cost $350 in adoption fees. Then you have the fact many avian shelter require classes on parrot care and require people to gain hands on experience with large parrots before taking one home. This ensures they are prepared for the loud screaming, mess and bites a parrot will inevitably be doing. It also gives them a Idea of how much they are getting into, and the option to decided a large parrot is not right for them. The money from the classes goes to caring for the birds in the shelter. These classes sometimes cost, and if I remember back to when we adopted our bird (5 years ago) classes were around $200. You may not have to take them (we didn’t) if you already have years of experience with large parrots.
Past the actual adoption/class fess, you will need to buy a breed-appropriate cage. For large parrots, these cages START at $300 and only go up from there. Putting a large bird in a small cage is not fair to the bird, and it is a absolute must you have a large enough cage. Then you look at food expenses. Our amazon goes through a $20 bag of high-quality seed about once a month. You don’t want to skimp and get cheap food, because the nutritional quality won’t be the same, and many birds refuse to eat pellets. Past seed, parrots of any size need fresh fruit and vegetables every day. This is not an option. They need a wide array of fresh produce that can easily tack $10-$15 onto your food bill every week (you should go with organic, as not to expose your birds to pesticides). Treats for training and reinforcing positive behaviors (which is lifelong) are $15 or so for a small bag. Then we get into toys. Some toys can be cheap (like baby toys from garage sales), but parrot toys from the petstore (and they will need those too for mental happiness), cost between $20-$50 PER TOY. Toys should be rotated in and out of the cage several times a week to keep your bird occupied. They destroy toys quite fast, so frequent replacement is necessary. Past toys and food, parrots need to see specialized avian vets. A routine checkup (which they have to have once a year) will cost you $200+ just to walk through the door. Any injuries/illnesses, and it only goes up from there. When my moms bird broke her foot 10 or so years ago, getting it fixed cost well over $1500. Taking them to a regular vet isn’t an option, regular vets cannot provide proper care, and many won’t even see large parrots.
While you may be able to scrape enough together to take one home, large parrots are a lifelong commitment, and are extremely costly pets after they get home. Only those 100% dedicated to providing care for these animals for the next 60+ years deserve to have one. Our amazon is a major cost factor. We knew this going in. We know he is all we can afford to provide proper care for, so as much as we’d love a whole flock of them, we realize the cost limitations. You need to sit down and look at every factor before taking a parrot home. This includes not just cost, but the time and dedication needed. Parrots are highly intelligent animals, right on par with great apes and dolphins. They can be taught to speak in context, and identify shapes/colors so many consider them the most intelligent animals. This intelligence proves problematic for many people used to caring for dogs and cats. Large parrots are not beginner birds. Many shelters have plenty of smaller parrots along with the big guys who are just as much in need of a loving home, only without the greater cost factor. Consider carefully before bringing one of these beautiful animals home. Volunteer at an avian shelter to see if these amazing animals are something you would consider keeping in your own home, or are better left to those who can provide proper care.
Lizzie asks…
What do i give my diabetic dog?
my dog is diabetic and idk what to feed him hlppppppp
admin answers:
The number one solution for your diabetic dog is to feed him or her a diet of homemade foods so you can track of exactly how much carbohydrates and sugar they are getting. A homemade diet of natural foods isn’t as expensive or as much work as you might think. I mean, you are probably already preparing meals for yourself/your family at least some of the time. Check out the many Websites with advice and easy recipes for natural dog food.
If you cannot avoid commercially manufactured dog food altogether, it is better to give your pooch good quality canned food that is low in carbohydrates and low in sodium. Canned dog food made especially for diabetic dogs is a safer way to go, but make sure it is high in protein. Even better if the food is organic. Since diabetes affects liver functions–and thus the immune system–the liver is less able to handle additives often found in commercial dog food. Check the ingredients on the label.
Most dry dog foods are largely made up of simple carbohydrates (sugars and/or starches). You are looking to drastically decrease your diabetic dog intake of carbs, especially simple carbs. There are some dry diabetic dog foods that are generally safe, but still check the ingredients to make sure it is high in protein and vegetables. Even so, dry dog food, diabetic or not, should never be the sole form of food–there is just not enough nutrition in it.

Make sure sugar or its other forms (sucrose, fructose, syrup, etc.) is not on the list of ingredients. No baked goods in the diet either, including most dog biscuits.
Keep in mind, also, that the amount of food that your dog eats must be carefully monitored. It is better for diabetic dogs that they eat 2 or 3 smaller meals a day than one large meal to keep blood sugar levels even. Hey, Tod M. You’re right about the small meals don’t know if you were being serious or not!
Before making any changes to your dog’s diet, it is important to consult a vet about the diabetic dog food diet your pet needs, and give those foods that your dog tolerates well.
Hope this helps.
