Your Questions About Dogs Life Span

Donna asks…

If you change into a BETTER dog food brand will it get a longer life span?

I fed my dog Purina food and I’m changing to Blue Buffalo.I heard corn and other ingredients make dogs life span shorter, but if i change brand will it make her life span longer?

admin answers:

Many things figure into the lifespan. Good nutrition is certainly one of them. The odds are much better if you feed a quality food.

Charles asks…

what is a dogs average life span?

I have a chihuahua and Maltese mix and I would really like to know what is a dogs average life span?

admin answers:

My family has always had a lot of dogs (chihuahuas mainly) and if they’re kept out side they usually live about 9-12 years but, if they’re in a house I’ve heard some can live to be 15 or 16 or so.

Richard asks…

How long will home made food increase my labradors life expectancy?

So my labrador is 5 and from ages 0-1 90% of his food was dry dog food. Over time it became less and less and we gave him more and more home made food. from ages 3-5 only around 50% of his food was dry food and the rest was home made food. At that point I already knew about the dangers of dry food. He is about 5 and a half now and I have completely switched him to a home made diet. We still have dry food but it is almost never used. And YES, it is a healthy diet of a mixture of fresh meat, vegetables, and other stuff. Its not just table left overs. It is as clean and healthy as all those internet articles reccomend. I am just wondering how long will it extend his life? There was this one video that said that dogs are actually supposed to live until they are 27 but because of dry food they live a lot less. I highly doubt that is true (wish it was). Labradors generally live to be 14-15. And my one is extremely well bred and he has no health issues (took him for a vet check up 2 days ago). So how many years will a natural home made diet increase your dogs life span?

admin answers:

IMO feeding him home made food will not make one iota difference to how long a dog lives.
My pals lab has just died at 14 years old and was fed on commercial dried dog food all his life.
Labs do NOT and never have lived for 27 years and neither do any other dogs except in very very exceptional circumstances and then they are normally small dogs. 14 is a very good age for Labrador.
Once a dog reaches 10 or 11 many get age related complaints (arthritis, cancer) just like humans do which contributes to how long they live. Keeping your Labrador lean and fit will prolong his life much more then a home made diet. Jmo.
