Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Recipes
Ken asks…
How do I get my cat off dry food and on to raw food?
My cat has chronic UTI problems and I think it is because of the dry Iams food she is addicted to. Sometomes she will eat a little canned Iams but not often enough to make her well. I hoe I can reverse her condition by changing her diet. I want to get her off the Iams completely and on to a raw food diet. How do I do this? How can I get her to eat the raw food? Where and what raw food should I get and how should she be fed? how often and how much? Should I give her other foods in addition to the raw meat?
Female cat, 8 years old. Medium sized.

Hi there… I want to apologize in advance for the length of this answer. I just have a lot of info to share with you and I don’t want to miss anything. : )
I too have a male cat with a similar condition. However his UTI’s led us to finding a Kidney Stone and he had to have surgery to have it removed. 🙁 The poor thing. Being a male it’s pretty rare from them to actually develop a stone. Usually they blow the stone/grain into their urethra and it blocks. But he didn’t. And from the looks and size of the stone, Doc is 100% convinced it’s been in there for years and years. 🙁 Phat Boy didn’t show symptoms though so we didn’t know until I caught him straining. I tell you all that so you know that I understand your situation with switching foods. Been there… done that. And it is the best thing you can do for her. Just also understand though that recent studies have shown diet to not be the cause of FLUTD/FUS. However you can make some changes that can help your cat for the better.
As for making homemade Cat food… it can be a huge ordeal and you could do more damage to your cat by feeding it an improperly prepared home meal. Especially a Cat that already has issues. Cats have very delicate dietary needs that must be researched thoroughly before feeding a RAW diet. There are NO “simple” homemade cat food recipes that work long term. I am not against RAW / BARF Diets for cats… I have tried it. I do know what is involved. It can be wonderful, but it can also be disastrous for your cat if you don’t know what you’re doing. Also know that Dog and Cat RAW diets are completely different. You will see that in your research. Be careful if you choose RAW, and know what you are getting into before you do it. If you feel you MUST go RAW, I recommend you start here http://www.catnutrition.org/. It’s a wonderful site with a lot of great information and recipes. Plan on spending a lot of time reading about this. No one here is going to give you the “simple” Answer to a RAW / BARF Diet for your cats.
With that said, my advice to you is this… Find a good high quality Human Grade Healthy, Holistic or Organic manufactured food instead.
Put her on a high quality human Grade Healthy, Holistic or Organic canned only diet of 5.5 ounces of wet food split up into three feedings or more a day. I know you say she won’t eat canned… but if you take away the dry she will be more apt to eat what you offer. Also try warming it in the microwave for a few seconds to make t smell yummy to her. If even after she boycotts you and starves for two days… go back to dry. Some cats just won’t eat wet food.
Let me give you a run down about foods…
It’s time for pet owners to wake up and take responsibility for what they feed their animals and quit trusting what those great big money hungry companies tell you. Research for yourself, learn, read the ingredients and make an informed decision for the health and safety of your beloved pet.
With the recall, wheat gluten is the big suspect in cat food that everyone is trying to avoid, and it SHOULD be avoided. It should have been avoided all along. It’s nothing more than a cheap protein source used as a binding agent by pet food companies.
Corn should always be avoided as well. It’s a huge filler worth NOTHING. Corn as an ingredient in cat food is a joke. Ever seen a cat chewing on a corn cob in a field? No, you haven’t.
Cats, despite thousands of years of domestication, remain strictly carnivorous. True and honest meat eaters and that is what they need most. Protein from meat!
As you search for your new pet food, be aware that there are three Categories of Pet Foods:
-“Grocery store” foods – (Generic Brands and cheap name brands) Those foods found in grocery stores and mass-market retailers are made with lower-quality, less-digestible, inexpensive ingredients and are therefore a cheaper alternative. While easy on the pocketbook, “grocery store” foods normally do not provide your cat with the healthiest, most nutrient-dense ingredients.
-Premium foods – (Iams/Eukanuba, Purina One, Hills Science Diet, Nutro and such) Foods often found in grocery stores, pet stores, and veterinarian offices that contain higher-grade ingredients, but still include many elements of “grocery store” food, such as artificial colors, artificial flavors, chemical preservatives, and “filler” ingredients such as corn and wheat products, by-products and even animal digest. Yuck! Premium foods are usually more expensive than “grocery store” foods because their ingredients are sometimes of a higher quality, and are therefore somewhat more beneficial and digestible. But don’t be fooled, some of those same so called Premium brands are sometimes worse than grocery store foods, but they charge prices like they are better. They aren’t!
-Healthy foods – (Wellness, Eagle Pack, Drs Foster and Smith) The newest addition to the pet food market – provide pets with the highest quality, healthiest, and most nutritious ingredients. They are typically available for purchase online or direct from the manufacturer. Some better retailers are starting to carry them now. Complete Petmart carries a few healthy brand foods. Foods in the Healthy class – contain nutrient-rich ingredients. Formulated to provide optimum health benefits for pets, these foods often use real meat as the primary protein source, carbohydrate-rich whole grains like brown rice and barley and whole, fresh fruits and vegetables. They should not contain artificial preservatives, flavors, or colors. They will almost always be fortified with additional vitamins and minerals, and will use the best natural sources for fatty acids to help build healthy skin and a beautiful coat. Because healthy foods use high quality ingredients, you should expect to pay a little more than you would for other types of pet food. Remember, though, with healthy foods you can feed less since healthy foods are more nutrient-dense than other types of food so it often evens out or cost’s les than feeding foods filled with cheap non-nutritional by-products fillers.
With all that information in mind, when you are choosing a new cat food, study the ingredients. All ingredients on pet food labels are listed by weight. Meaning whatever ingredients are listed first on the list, there is more in there. The first ingredients listed should be whole meat ingredients, protein sources, such as Chicken or Turkey. NOT just the word “meat”! Who the heck knows what that is? The word Chicken Meal is ok, but it should be a secondary ingredient, not first. Meal is the meat dehydrated and ground into a powder.
The ingredients also should NOT include any by-products or animal digest whatsoever. Those are disgusting left over animal parts that are scraped off the filthy floors of meat and poultry plants. They should just go into the trash but they put them into pet food instead. EW!!!!
Also make sure there are no artificial colors or flavors. And make sure there is no BHA and BHT used preservatives. These preservatives have been shown to cause cancer in both cats and dogs. Bad Bad stuff and it’s in almost every cat treat on the market. 🙁
So, in summery of the ingredients… if you see the words by-products, Animal Digest, the word “meat” alone, Corn, Corn Gluten, Wheat Gluten, or BHA or BHT… stop reading, put down that bag and move on to the next.
Be aware that when switching to a Healthy, Holistic or Organic food, you will pay for what you get. Good foods are not cheap. They are pricey and will cost you on a per bag basis much more. Just like steak costs more than hotdogs. But again, you will be feeding a better food and improving the over all health of your pet. Which in turn leads to less vet visits for illness now and more importantly later in life in their Geriatric years. You will also feed less of this food on a per animal basis because a smaller amount of food contains what your cat needs. Overall healthy foods are well worth it, if only for the piece of mind that the ingredients are safer.
What are some good foods I recommend? I feed my cats Drs. Foster and Smith Holistic Adult Lite Dry cat food along with a mix of Wellness Dry. I also feed Merrick Canned.
I purchase Drs. Foster and Smith online and have it automatically delivered to my door so I never run out and never have to go get it. It’s one of the best foods on the market and has no “fillers” in it. It is also very reasonably priced compared to other holistic foods. And when you’re feeding as many cats as I am, price is as important as ingredients. If you can’t afford it, you can’t feed it. So buy the highest quality you can and feel good that you are doing the absolute best you can for your pet.
If you want to buy in a store, Complete Petmart is a good store and carries quite a few natural, organic, and holistic blends. Also check with your local feed stores. Old Mother Hubbard Wellness Brand is a great holistic food I feed. As is Eagle Pack Dry Cat food. Merrick canned is also a great source of nutrition and they will be coming out with a dry line this summer.
I highly recommend people take the time to research for themselves, but the information I have given should get you off to a good start. Good luck choosing a new food for your cats!
Side note… Please don’t feed Iams / Eukanuba. It’s ALL fillers, byproducts, animal digest and CRAP. Read the ingredients! There is nothing good for your cat in that food. Not to mention they conduct the most appalling animal testing you have ever seen. Http://www.iamscruelty.com to see the terror they create.

Ok, so now you’re on your way to choosing a better food. Your key thing because of your cats UTI issues is to get her onto a low ash, low magnesium diet. The lower the better on both of those percents.
You also want to encourage her water intake. Purchase a pet fountain. I bought a drinkwell from Drs Foster and Smith for my cats and they love it. Http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=1783 And give her only Distilled water. Many vets believe that the quality, or lack there of, in tap water leads to URI’s. Giving distilled water will not add any uneeded minerals to her system. And it will help clean her out just like it does for humans.
I hope that my suggestions help you help your kitty. UTI’s can be so frustrating. And sometimes… not matter what you do they still persist because of the cats body and how it reacts to things. I wish you luck in helping your kitty ward off the UTI’s!

Mandy asks…
Is it healthy to feed my dog homemade food?
Well, after watching so much youtube videos about homemade dog food, I just wanted to know if it is really nutritional and healthy for my dog. The ingredients are frozen carrots, chicken liver, frozen beans/peas, sweet potatoes, and white rice. Is that good or bad? Why? Thank you for helping me!!!
admin answers:
Hi Charlito,
Thank you for asking a great question. It shows you are a great pet parent with concerns for your pet’s long term health. Yes, it is very nutritional and healthy for your dog. Many dogs who are fed home cooked or raw diets live longer, healthier lives. “You are what you eat” pertains to dogs as well. I am a Canine Chef and have been home-cooking for my dogs for over two years now as they were very sick. I have studied and read every book and worked with a Holistic Animal Nutritionists when creating my business to help busy pet parents who don’t have the time to cook. Our recipes were created with a Holistic Animal Nutritionist, which humans can eat as well, but it is all about catering to your precious pet! We love our vet, but no longer have vet bills, except for our annual checkups.
It is very important to know what you can and cannot feed your pets. Many dog cookbooks and websites list ingredients that are not the best for your pet. Do not use white rice as it is hard for dogs and humans to digest. Use Brown Rice, quinoa, barley or oats, preferably organic.
Try to stay away from peas and carrots as they are genetically modified. Try to use fresh vegetables and cook or lightly steam them. Other than raw carrots, raw veggies are hard for most dogs to digest and they will just throw them up. Sweet Potatoes or Yams are great. Do not use white potatoes as they can be carcigenic. Do not use wheat or white flour or soy. “Why?” can be found on our website.
Try to use meats that do not have any hormones or antibiotics. We only use 100% Grass Fed meats, which are more expensive that meats from feed-lots, but well worth the price in long term health, happiness and preventing illnesses. Plus you support local farmers who ethically raise their animals.
Variety is key, as many nutrients are provided. Feeding the same meal to your pet can eventually cause allergic reactions. Make sure you are feeding the right proportions of protein, good fats and carbs. A Good Rule of Thumb is about 55-60% protein, 25-30 veggies and 10-15% grain. Make sure to “always” add a supplement from whole foods as well. Stay away from synthetic vitamins as their digestive system does not readily absorb these.
I recently saved $8,000 in surgery for luxating patellas on my dogs Cleo & Patra. How? Feeding whole foods that are nutrient dense and medicinal, along with acupuncture and raw marrow bones, which we sell.
Dogs need alot of calcium and raw dairy is great for cats and dogs that are lactose intolerant. It also helps humans with allergies and asthma. It is the pasteurization process that everyone is allergic to, which destroys the lactic acid that your body and pets need to digest. Give them raw cheese as a snack as well. Remember to start slowly with anything new.
At Cleo & Patra Canine Cuisine, we create healthy home-style cooked meals for dogs using only nutrient dense ingredients you can pronounce and your dog can easily digest. We have had much success in helping dogs get off their food allergy medications after two months on our food. Transitioning your pet’s diet SLOWLY is very important!
For more information and the many benefits of a home-cooked diet, check out our website at www.cleoNpatra.com. I’ve done all the homework for you. 🙂
I’ve listed a few other sites below that will be helpful as well. We were the featured “Pet Food” product in Doggie Afficionado’s “Green Living” Winter issue, which you can read on our site.
Yes, our food is more expensive than kibble. Grass fed meats cost more as the animals live twice as long as animals from feedlots.
All our preparation, cooking and vacuum-sealed packaging is done by hand . All our food sources are from the USA and we ship across the USA. “Know Your Source” of food is our motto.
Our Canine Connections page lists our farmers so you can order from them for yourselves and your pets, as well as many good books, DVDs and website links on this subject.
Either you are going to spend your money upfront on good nutrition or down the road on vet bills. Take you pick!
Good Luck on your venture and don’t hesitate to ask any more questions. Our concern is that pet parents are cooking properly for their pets, with the best intentions. Sorry for the long answer, but I am so passionate about this and want everyone’s dogs to live as long a life as possible! 🙂
Bone Appetit!

Your Questions About Dog Training Collars
Ken asks…
Can I trust this site called etronixmart.com to buy dog training collars?
I love my dog, so I decide to select a good dog training collars for it. Then I came across this site: http://www.etronixmart.com/ that offer dog training collars. They are in low price but with amazing function. Anyone who buy from this site can share your suggestion?

Better question – why do you feel the need to electrocute your dog to make him obey you, rather than humanely training him?
Daniel asks…
Does anyone know where I can get a leather/chain combination training collar for my puppy?
I just got a new puppy and am looking for a training collar like the ones I used years ago. It is choker style but buckles on like a regular collar. If anyone knows where I can get one I would appreciate the information.
admin answers:
Here is one http://www.ldsleather.com/collars.html
scroll half way down the page, there is 2 listed one with a slide and the second with a buckle
To search for others, do an internet search for leather martingale, you may be able to turn up some more
These type of collars are referred to as humane choke or limited choke , far nicer and safer than regular choke collars
and very good for dogs that can back out of a regular style collar and helps to keep them safe
I have more links listed here

Paul asks…
Why do you treat your dog like a person?
I’ve asked a few questions about dogs over the last couple of days from kennels outside to choke training collars and it seems like people think I’m being cruel. I want to train my dog properly and have been doing that since I have the luxury of being home during the day. But, I treat the dog like a dog. When he is good, he gets treats and when he is bad, he gets punished. I don’t baby talk to the dog. I don’t put him in sweaters. I don’t like him on the furniture and he doesn’t go on our bed. My husband wanted the dog and I’m trying to make the best of it. Our dog does have a good home, but I treat him like a dog. Why do you treat your dog like a little person? I just don’t understand that. I have a cat and would say I am more a cat person, but then I treat my cat like a cat. Help me understand your logic.
I do treat my animals with love, but love doesn’t mean they can do whatever they want. There are still rules that must be obeyed.
freckles – that’s what I was getting at. That’s the answer I was looking for. Thanks.
I meant no offense by the word, “you”. It’s just that I’ve noticed some people that have dogs, have a different type of behavior with them, as if they can do no wrong. I’m not trying to insult anyone, if that’s how I come across, I seriously would like to know why some people behave this way and others don’t. Honestly.
admin answers:
I love reading the answers to a question like this!
The answer is: because they dont know any better.
Thier dog would actually be happier being treated like a dog!
Recently you see alot of schools teaching positive reinforcement only training.I like to call it “trend training”, it doesnt actually work, but it is what people want to hear and it is what sells. That is why I love Cesar Milan, he still works with correction and everyone says WOW look at his results!..LOL
Dont get me wrong, positive reinforcement is valuable, but only balanced with correction.
What happens when the reward is not as sweet as the distraction?
People should be angry at this trendy training taking over because it means that there are some animals being surrendered to shelters becasue thier owners werent given the right guidance and they couldnt train thier dogs.
Now people go to Petsmart for thier training, guess what, they have to market positive reinforcement only because if someone took correction out of context and abused thier dog, petsmart could get sued!
If you love your dog, treat him like a dog!

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Grain Free
George asks…
Do the same restrictions apply to cat food as they do to dog food?
It looks like all cat food has corn in it. I know dogs can’t have corn, but what are some things cat’s shouldn’t have? What are the ingredients I should look for when shopping for cat food? Don’t you think that cats can do fine with so-so food?
admin answers:
Let me share with you what I have learned about feline nutrition to help you make an informed decision on what diet you should feed your cat.
Many brands of manufactured cat foods claiming to be “healthy” really are not. In fact they are made of the lowest ingredients possible. I’m not saying that a cat can’t live off them… Just the same as you could live off hot dogs and Mac and cheese forever, but better choices can and should be made for your feline friends. I would not venture to say that any manufactured food is “best” for a cat but a grain free organic wet food would be a good start. Feeding canned is certainly better than feeding dry in all cases.
Cats were never meant to eat dry food, also known as cereals or kibble. We, humans, make them eat it for convenience to us. It has nothing to do with them or their nutritional needs. It’s completely species inappropriate.
All small domestic cats descended from desert cats. In the wild, desert cats derive their entire liquid intake from their prey. They do not have a thirst mechanism because they don’t need it when eating a species appropriate diet. They get all they need from what they eat. Additionally water was usually not available to them in their desert climate. So they do not often drink water. Regular ol’ house cats have descended from those same wild desert cats.
So in a home environment, your kitty does not get the moisture it needs from dry food and it’s almost always in a constant state of dehydration. Water fountains are encouraged to TRY to get your cat to drink more and your kitty may even enjoy it, but it will never meet its water intake needs drinking from a bowl.
Deadly feline illnesses such as diabetes, kidney failure, obesity, allergies, Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), bladder stones, kidney stones, urinary tract blockages and Urinary Tract Infections (FLUTD), with and without deadly crystals run rampant these days. Cats are not taking in enough water to stave them off. Proper water intake through a species appropriate diet alone can prevent most of these conditions.
Overall, wet is all around better for any cats diet, be it canned or Raw and they should never be fed dry cereal kibble if we wish to most closely match their wild nutritional and dietary needs. Kibble meets our needs… not our cats.
It is also bogus that kibble cleans teeth. DRY FOOD DOES NOT CLEAN TEETH. It’s an old myth that has been scientifically disproved for years, but old-school vets drilled it into people’s heads for so long (and sadly still do) that people still believe it. Cats can not “chew”. They do not have flat “chewing” teeth. Their molars are not for grinding food. They have meat ripping pointy carnivorous teeth. You may see them “crunch” a piece of food once to crack and break it… but they are absolutely unable to chew a hard piece of food. Want your cat to have clean teeth? Give them an appropriately sized raw bone to chew on. :o)
I personally feed a Raw Meat and Bones based diet to my cats and they are very healthy on it. I HIGHLY recommend it. Once I got the hang of it and felt comfortable with it it’s a snap to prepare. It’s something you might want to consider someday. Cats are obligate carnivores after all and must derive ALL their nutrients from meat based sources. They are unable to absorb them from any other source. Despite thousands of years of domestication they remain strictly carnivorous. True and honest meat eaters and that is what they need most. Protein from meat!
If you are interested in feeding a raw diet some great places to start learning are http://www.catinfo.org/ , http://www.catnutrition.org/ , and http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/ .
If you would like to try raw with your cats and don’t want to get all technical about it but want to try a trusted, time tested and balanced raw diet you can order from http://www.felinespride.com/products/catfood.aspx . I purchased this myself when I first started and my cats loved it!
Another premade Raw you can try is Natures Varity. I personally have never used this but know many people that do and it’s pretty easy to find http://www.naturesvariety.com/content.lasso?page=1507&-session=naturesvariety:D04EC9250597c11908GJS417647E.
If raw is not an option for you please be aware that there are three Categories of manufactured Pet Foods:
-Healthy foods – (Wellness, Merrick, Eagle Pack, Drs Foster & Smith) The newest addition to the pet food market – provide pets with the highest quality, healthiest, and most nutritious ingredients. They are typically available for purchase online or direct from the manufacturer. Some better retailers are starting to carry them now. Complete Petmart carries a few healthy brand foods. Foods in the Healthy class contain nutrient-rich ingredients.
So, in summery of the ingredients… if you see the words by-products, Animal Digest, the word “meat” alone, Corn, Corn Gluten, Wheat Gluten, or BHA or BHT… stop reading, put down that product and move on to the next.
Be aware that when switching to a Healthy, Holistic or Organic food, you will pay for what you get. Good foods are not cheap. They are pricey and will cost you more than cheaper products, just like steak costs more than hotdogs. But again, you will be feeding a better food and improving the over all health of your pet. This in turn leads to less vet visits for illness now and more importantly later in life in their geriatric years. You will also feed less of this food on a per animal basis because a smaller amount of food contains what your cat needs. Overall healthy wet foods are well worth it, if only for the piece of mind that the ingredients are better for your cat than cheap crap.
You can start your research for a healthy cat food here if you are not ready to try feeding a Raw diet:

If you want to buy in a store, Complete Petmart is a good store and carries quite a few natural, organic, and holistic blends. Also check with your local feed/grain stores.

********IMPORTANT*******Don’t forget to switch your Pets food slowly over a period of 10 to 14 days, if you can. Mixing 25% new to 75% old. Then 50/50… then 75% new to 25% old. And finally switch over to 100% new. Take it slow as not to upset their digestive system.
David asks…
What is the best food to give to a 5 month old kitten?
I just adopted a kitten and I have been giving him Iams kitten food. I know he’s growing fast but to me he’s getting fat. Am I feeding him the wrong food? And also how much food should you give a cat per day. I usually just fill up his bowl when it looks empty. Please help.
admin answers:
The proper amount to feed per cat/per day should be about 5.5 ounces of wet (high quality grain free canned or Raw Meat/Bones/Organ) food.
The calories in that amount of food are sufficient for most “normal” sized cats. Of course a highly energetic cat will need more food to keep it healthy, and a lazy cat will need less food to keep it from getting obese. But 5.5 ounces of wet food per day is a good place to start.

-“Grocery store” foods – (Generic Brands and cheap name brands) Those foods found in grocery stores and mass-market retailers are made with lower-quality, less-digestible, inexpensive ingredients and are therefore a cheaper alternative. While easy on the pocketbook, “grocery store” foods normally do not provide your cat with the healthiest, most nutrient-dense ingredients.

Where can I buy cheap organic cat food?
I read about the recall of some dog foods because they were making the dogs who ate them sick and in most cases, dead. I have a cat and I want to make sure shes eating the correct food, where can I buy organic cat food for a reasonable price?
I live in Seattle, WA
admin answers:
I feed my cats Innova EVO and Wellness Core wet foods, and a tiny amount of EVO dry food for my two crunchy food addicts. They’re both high protein, grain free foods made of human grade meats. They contain no by-products and neither company has been involved in any of the food recalls. They’re not cheap by any means, but they’re well worth the extra cost in the long run. Interestingly, since they’re both formulated to accommodate a cat’s natural carnivorous diet, cats actually don’t need or eat as much of it as they do the junk foods that are full of grains and fillers that don’t give their bodies what they need. I classify pretty much any food that can be bought at a grocery or discount store as junk food. The only exception I’ve seen is Newman’s Own Organics that can be purchased at Target and some Wal-Mart stores. The cost of this food is about the same as the others I’ve mentioned, so I still recommend one of the other two since they are overall better foods.
Wellness can be purchased at Petco. It’s about $1.29 for a 5.5 ounce can of wet food and about $33 for a 12 pound bag of dry. EVO is a little more difficult to find and is usually only sold in smaller pet supply stores, or by groomers or kennels. It’s about $1.35 for a 5.5 ounce can of wet and $38 for a 15 pound bag of dry. Again, they’re both well worth the cost.
The first link below is to a site that offers lots of great information on cat nutrition and explains why a species appropriate diet is so important. The next two are to the EVO and Wellness websites so you can read more about their foods and use the store locators if you’re interested in finding a source for either of them.

Your Questions About Dog Training Denver
William asks…
What is the list of service dog breed variety?,and how getting a service dog works?
list of most commonly available to least available please?
and I know there are alot of big dog breeds for service dogs, looking for the smallest possible.
admin answers:
I once attended an event for people fostering puppies for a school that trained assistance dogs. While they had many Labs, Goldens, and a standard Poodle, they also had a Pug, some Chahuahuas, a Cavalier King Charles, and maybe some other smaller breeds. The ADA has no breed restrictions. Denver includes service dogs in their Pit Bull ban. I think they lose in court on that.
You must first be diagnosed as disabled. From there, you may either train your own dog, or as I recommend, contact a program that trains dogs. Good links to more information are http://www.ada.gov/svcabrs3.pdf www.iaadp.org and www.psychdog
Donald asks…
Where and how do I do agility in colorado?
I have a border collie/ australian sheperd cross who needs a good activity to focus his mind. He’s a year old and I’d like to start taking him to classes for agility. I don’t want any high level stuff and I don’t want to send him away to training, can anyone tell me anything on this topic? Thanks and any and all suggestions are appreciated 😀
admin answers:
I don’t know where you are in Colorado so it’s hard to give specific questions. Let me give you two generic answers:
1. Go to www.agilityevents.net and find an agility trial near you. Go observe and ask exhibitors (ie: the participants) “Who would you recommend?” or “where do you take lessons/classes from?” and that is your best option. That’s because most agility clubs and instructors don’t have websites or advertise in the phone book.
2. You can also go to Clean Run’s website and check under clubs and classes. The list is out of date and in-complete but it’s better than nothing.
3. Here are a couple of options I know about:
–Liz Blasio is in Greeley, has an agility school and her URL is: http://www.progressiveschoolfordogs.com/
–I know there used to be a Colorado agility listserv with yahoo groups–you can check under “colorado agility”
–Sharon Bradshaw in Grand Junction at aussiehike@aol.com
–Lynne Fickett in Durango with Durango Agility Dogs at lynnef@frontier.net
–Melanie Platt in Lafayette with Front Range Agility Dogs at mhplatt@mho.com or http://www.frontrangeagility.com/
–Katie or Kathi (can’t remember which) Dvorak with “Mile High Agility”
–Front Range Agility Team in Denver at www.coloradofrat.com
Basically, there’s just a ton of resources for agility in Colorado, all over the State. And if you’re on the border, I’m sure you’ll find resources in neighboring states that are close by.
Getting started in agility recs….
1. There is a really good starter book by Joe and Ali Canova “Agility Training for you and your dog.” For my money it’s the best one out there. Books by Laurie Leach and Margaret Bonham aren’t bad ones either. But be warned–trying to learn agility by book is like trying to learn how to dance or do martial arts by book.
2. Learn how to use a clicker. A lot of old-school and traditional folks often push back on the idea of using a clicker, like it’s some kind of gimmick or it’s a fad or what worked for granddad and his dogs is good enough for me. I trained 15 dogs without a clicker (grew up on a farm, all of our dogs were working dogs). For #16 I used a clicker. I have no idea how you can train agility without a clicker. Stuff like back-chaining, targeting–I’m sure it’s doable without a clicker (which is really about operant conditioning) but I don’t know how you’d do it. The clicker is really just a tool that works as part of operant conditioning. And that is what ALL serious animal trainers (including the US Navy with the dolphins they train to spot mines, SeaWorld with killer whales, tricks trainers in Hollywood) use operant conditoning.
2. Get obedience down. Even if you don’t compete seriously in agility you’ll need a dog that can focus, heel off-leash reliably. You’ll need a good sit, down, stay and recall.
3. Get into tricks. They’re good warmups for your dog, you learn how your dog learns, you improve teamwork, your dog learns you’re fun. Think of tricks as mini-agility: you get all the same things from agility except in bigger amounts so doing trick work is a prelude to agility. Plus, tricks are great things to work on indoors and when you’ve got a couple of feet of snow on the ground.
4. Practice behavior shaping. You need to be clicker competent to do this. Shirley Chong (www.shirleychong.com) has more detail on this. See the game “101 uses for a box” for an example.
Last of all, prepare to become addicted. Getting into agility is the smartest thing I ever did for my dog, we both have a blast. It’s his job. If my marriage would survive it, I’d do agility every weekend.
Mandy asks…
What cities and or county s have a ban on the pit bull breed?
Hi my name is Dominic and i want to know what cites, state, and or count’s have a ban on the pit bull breed because its unfair for the owners who actually train their pit bulls correctly and disapprove of the dog fights and ect. Many people are joining the fight to save this great breed.
admin answers:
The only place in the U.S. That I am for sure of is Denver, Colorado.
I know that they are illegal in the UK as well.
And its a good thing people are standing up for the breed, though, I feel not enough people are 🙁
There are plenty of responsible APBT owners out there who deserve their dogs…but there are also one’s that are not fit to own this breed but still do.
BSL does nothing for the public but bring heartbreak and confusion. Nothing is being done about the real problem…people. As time goes by, supporters for this ridiculous band-aid approach are getting laws passed left and right and noone is doing anything about it.
BSL is a flawed concept from the moment it was concieved. In most cases, the dogs are targeted leaving the owner, the resposible rational thinking party, out of it.
Some impose fines along with their laws and are often not enforced, so the owner gets away with a slap on the wrist.
Dogs are not the problem and BSL does not recognize this. People are the problem and until we start punishing stupid people for their neglectful actions which allow these dogs to become ill-mannered we will never stop the problem.
First problem is..take one breed away, these people will find another breed to replace it.
Since the APBT bans, the Rottweiler is now on the rise as the most popular breed.
BSL can compare to gender or racial profiling. Simply because a dog appears to be a dog on the restricted list, it is treated as such. So beware all you American Staffy owners.
What if you were driving down the street and the police picked you up, took you to jail, sentenced you, and put you on death row just for looking like a certain ethnic group. BSL does exactly that to dogs.
So why is BSL implemmented daily? God forbid people have to take responisbility for their irresponisble actions, and BSL supports these people by not placing punishments on them.
We Have to Fight!!!
Fighting BSL is the only way to keep all breeds safe. Soon BSL will encompass any breed of dog that can bite (which is ALL of them) so where does that leave the dog lover??
There is NO evidence that BSL even works!!!!
In Short, BSL has nothing to offer the US public but confusion and loss. BSL is NOT and will NEVER be a practical means of regulating vicious dogs and attacks. Until law makers see the fact of life we will be faced will more BSL laws all over the U.S

John asks…
what is the best commercial dog food in the market?
Doing my research, I believe Great Life Dog/Cat food is top on the list. They use a freeze dry process, use organic ingrediants, add probiotics and emzymes, freeze dried salmon oil and have grain free formulas. For your basic, good quality dog/cat food Canidae/Felindae is the smart choice. For organic, Newman’s Organic is a worthy one, and for raw food diet, Nature’s Variety is winner. Others to consider are Timberwolf, Merricks and Blue Buffulo. Do you agree? Give your comments Check out the websites.
admin answers:
I don’t consider Nature’s Variety to be the best pre-made “raw food” company. Their medallions have A LOT of bone- you have to supplement extra bone-less meat to prevent dry poop. They also use a lot of vegetables. I would rather go with Bravo! Raw food.
I don’t necessarily believe Canidae is the “best” food out there. It’s good-quality food and cheap, but there are a lot of better brands, like Nature’s Variety Instinct and Innova EVO. It depends on what works for your dog.

What’s the best brand of dog food for puppies?
What’s the best brand of dog food for puppies?
admin answers:
There are so many dog foods on the market right now and most people are totally oblivious to healthy and unhealthy dog food. I used to be, but after looking into dog food and researching it I have completely changed my ways when it comes to dog food. All of the food in Wal Mart and most foods from other stores such as Petsmart are unhealthy garbage. Why? Because they either carry:
“Artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives,” all of these can cause cancer and several other health problems. Cancer is the #1 killer of cats and dogs.
“By-products,” they are the junk in meat that are not approved for humans to eat. Road kill, cancerous, dead, and dying animals are allowed as well.
“Fillers,” are corn, wheat, and soy products that virtually don’t have any nutrition in them. They pass right through. Which also makes your dog have to eat more food to feel full.
Surely good dog foods such as Science diet, Eukanuba, Iams, Pedigree, and Purina don’t have any of those and are great to feed my dogs right? Wrong. These foods have most if not all of these terrible things.
Here are the first ten ingredients of three of the so called best foods, which make up most of what your dogs eat and are the most important. The capitol words are the main things that are wrong in the ingredient lists.
Purina adult complete nutrition- WHOLE GRAIN CORN, POULTY BY-PRODUCT MEAL, ANIMAL FAT preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), CORN GLUTEN MEAL, MEAT AND BONE MEAL, brewers rice, soybean meal, barley, whole grain wheat, animal digest… (There is nothing good in that list at all)
Eukanuba-Chicken, CHICKEN BY-PRODUCTS MEAL, CORN MEAL, GROUND WHOLE GRAIN SORGUM, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Fish Meal (source of fish oil), Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Brewers Rice, Natural Chicken Flavor, Dried Beet Pulp (sugar removed)… (Most of what you see are either fillers or by-products)
Science Diet- GROUND WHOLE GRAIN CORN, CHICKEN BY-PRODUCT MEAL, Soybean Meal, ANIMAL FAT (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Soybean Oil, Chicken Liver Flavor, Flaxseed, Iodized Salt, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, … (first ingredient is a filler followed by by-products and more fillers)
Here is a list of both cat and dog well known foods and treats to stay away from-Fancy Feast, Alpo, Friskies,Mighty Dog, Dog Chow, Cat Chow, Puppy Chow, Kitten Chow, Beneful, Purina One, Purina ProPlan, DeliCat, HiPro, Kit’n’Kaboodle, Tender Vittles, Purina Veterinary Diets, MeowMix, Gravy Train, Kibbles ’n Bits, Wagwells, 9Lives, Cycle, Skippy, Nature’s Recipe, Milk Bone, Pup-Peroni, Snausages, Pounce, Pedigree, Waltham’s, Cesar, Sheba, Temptations, Goodlife Recipe, Sensible Choice, Excel, Hills Prescription Diets, Nature’s Best, Diamond, Ol’Roy, Iams, Nutro, Royal Canin.
Here are some foods that I recommend- Timberwolf organics, Innova, California Natural, Evo, Blue Buffalo, Taste of the wild, Wellness, Merrick Before grains, Chicken soup for the dog lovers soul, Health Wise, Karma, Orijen. Plus there are many more great foods not listed. You have to look at the ingredients list of any food that you feed your dog. If it have any of the things listed as bad then immediately put it down.
To show what a good healthy dog food looks like, here is the ingredient list of Taste of the Wild High Prairie- Bison, venison, lamb meal, chicken meal, egg product, sweet potatoes, peas, potatoes, canola oil, roasted bison, roasted venison, natural flavor, tomato pomace, ocean fish meal, choline chloride, dried chicory root, tomatoes, blueberries, raspberries, yucca schidigera extract, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Saccharomyces cerevesiae fermentation solubles, dried Aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin (vitamin B2), vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

Any Tips for Feeding a Dog with Kidney Failure?
So my angel has been diagnosed with kidney failure, I don’t know how long we have, so I’m willing to try anything. I have her on IV fluids, antibiotics, anti nausea meds, and pain meds(non anti-inflammatory of course) and prescription kidney diet dog food, wet and dry.
But she won’t eat on her own.
She sniffs it, but just won’t take a bite. I know it must taste good, because my other dog loves it. I have to hand feed her small pieces and try to get her to swallow. I’ve heard organic baby food, like apples or something might work, anything with low protien and phosphorus, putting that on the dry food. I’ll try that … but if anyone has some info on what has worked for you or if you have anything to share, please help, I want to extend her time with us if I can keep her comfortable.
Thank you, thank you from Sable and her mommy
She is a 70lb 7 yr old APBT. She has never had any problems in the past, and unfortunately we weren’t able to catch it until 75% of her kidneys had already failed. She is so strong, mentally, and never showed any signs. She has been a house dog her whole life, and under my close supervision whenever outside, so has never gotten into anything. It’s just so devistating, I feel for everyone who has ever lost a pet.
She is my heart and soal.
Thank you to everyone for such wonderful feedback. There has been some great articals and some very kind words, and I’m going to join that group because I need some help, because I think I’m gonna “loose it”. Sorry I’m crying…. I appreciate everyone of you for helping during this time.
Thanks again!!!!

my neighbors are threatening 2 shoot my dog because their cats come into MY yard?
A few months ago we went to the shelter with my sister and she got a chihuahua. Their was a puppy their it was a 3 month old husky. It was going to be put down that day. We had them get it out and we played with it for a while & she was great with my kids & my bf(who doesn’t like dogs) even loved her. So we got her. Her names Princess. Shes now 5 months and still great with my kids & we got her housebroke in a week & she can sit and shake. But, my neighbor has 4 cats. They come threw our garage(theirs a hole below the door they can squeeze through but our dogs cant get out threw) and eat the dogs food. They aren’t smart enough to learn if Princess is out their shes gonna chase them…They can look right at her and then still walk right out to the food. She doesnt attack them like shes gonna kill them, but she does think their her own personal walking chew toys. My neighbors have called the cops atleast 4 times in the 2 months we’ve had her. We tried bringing the food inside so the cats would stay out, and they still come over and lay on the table in the backyard….She says if we dont get rid of the dog her husbands gonna shoot it. And he would. People have saw dogs come into his yard and he shoots them or hits with them a shovel..But if their cats come in our yard and we would do that he would be pissed and call the cops(we wouldn’t do that tho so dont yell at me 4 that)
The cops usually say we have to work it out between us.
I don’t think im doing anything wrong. Its my yard, we have a fence and our dogs stay in the fence unless were right out front with them and we make sure they dont leave our yard. Shes the one with the animals that dont stay in her yard. I know you cant really keep outside cats in your yard, but thats not my problem…
What do i do? Im not getting rid of the puppy since she did nothing wrong…except eat my shoe….
Oh yea and we have tried blocking the hole with a big piece of wood & they can climb the fence or something cause they still got in.
admin answers:
I doubt that you can get rid of the neighbor, so you need to keep his cats out of your yard.
One of the things cats are fussy about is getting wet. Water is “kryptonite for cats.” Getting wet seems to be a phobia for them.
When you see the cats in the forbidden area, you can try hosing them down with a Super Soaker or similar water gun. They will realize that they are unwanted in your yard.
But if that doesn’t work, you can go hi-tech. Devices such as Scarecrow Sprinklers detect an intruder’s presence and fire a blast of water at it.
You can turn the scarecrow off when you and the pup want to go out.
You will find the scrarecrow at any good garden supply, or online. ( they always have them on eBay and Amazon)
Here are the reviews for the Scarecrow:
http://landscaping.about.com/od/helpforconsumers1/gr/scarecrow.htm
If you can’t set up a Scarecrow, you might try one of the commercial cat repellents. One is a powder called, “Shake-Away.” Shake-Away bears the scent of the urine of predators that cats fear, namely, the coyote, the fox and the bobcat. This commercial cat repellent comes in a granular form, which you simply sprinkle around the problem area. The product is advertised as being organic, making it an acceptable option to use around children and pets. Nor will it harm your plants.
Here is more about it, and it runs $14-15:
http://www.critter-repellent.com/cat/cat-repellant.php
They carry it at Petsmart, but I also found it on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Shake-Away-9002020-Repellent-Coyote/dp/B001ACRPMI
Donald asks…
Is Nutro Natural Choice good food?
It was recommended by a breeder and we have given our bulldogs (english and french) that since they were both puppies. My english is almost 2 and is on the Venison Meal with whole brown rice
and my frenchie is 11 months and is just finishing his lamb and rice puppy bites…we have just started mixing the adult venison with his food.
The reason we were very attracted to this brand was because they gear towards sensitive stomachs and skin and if you’ve ever owned a bulldog you know they can have both very badly.
They have amazing coats might I add.
but I haven’t come in contact with that many people that use it.
It’s definitely a premium dog food and is about $48 for the 35lb bag but just wanted to get opinions if this is truly a good choice.
or do you have a better educated suggestion?
ReddyLee- thank you sooooooo much! your answer is so thourough and helpful.
I have heard other owners of other breeds talk about Innova.
My pups food is almost gone so I really am going to switch them over to Innova slowly with the rest of their food.
My babies are everything to me and I need healthy bulldogs so thank you again for all your input.
admin answers:
I’m an English bulldog mom and a dog rescuer.
If a food has wheat, corn, excessive meals (ashy versions especially), soy, preservatives, etc, its a bad food, plain and simple.
With bulldogs, Innova is a great choice. They seem to do best on this food, over Wellness or Merrick’s (two other highly favored brands by discerning health conscious pet owners), although my Saint Bernard does well on all three of the brands I just mentioned. With bulldogs, keeping those folds clean starts with food. We feed Innova, twice a day (you can feed 3 times a day if you are home for it, but typically twice a day is a good option–once a day is too rough on tummies!), along with Nupro supplement (we use the silver label Nupro for the extra joint health support, as most joint health support pills give bullies the runs!), a tablespoon of yogurt (with active cultures) a day to help digestive and intestinal issues as well as keeping yeast balanced to keep folds clean, and 400 IU of Vitamin E daily.
Typically, Innova runs about $40-45 for a 33 pound bag. It can be found in many specialty pet stores and can also be bought online on Amazon.com for a bit extra.
If it gives you an idea as to how good Innova really is, I’ll share this story.
Our bulldog is a little stinker. He’s a big chewer, a hard chewer, and he has been known to destroy most toys. We only supply him with Durable Nylabones and the black (super strong) Kong toys. We tried a new version of a kong type bone by Nylabone that was originally packaged stating that it was “for really strong chewers, indestructible” (they no longer make these claims). We gave the bone to our bully, and sat on the couch to keep an eye on him. Within seconds, he pulled a piece of the bone off and swallowed it down. When we examined the bone, it looked as though he has swallowed very little (it was hard to tell because of the bones unusual bumps and shapes).
He ended up with severe bowel obstruction, that was first missed by our old vet (we’ve switched since then–nothing personal, but they were too busy with the reproductive side of the business to deal with more vet care based issues), and he was truly near death by the time we took him (for the second time) to the emergency vet. They put him into surgery immediately.
The surgeon came out and asked us (almost pleadingly) what we fed him on a regular basis. We told him: Innova, Nupro, yogurt, and Vitamin E. He said that he would be changing his own dogs from Wellness to our routine, and most of his staff changed as well. He told us that had our bulldog not been as healthy as possible, as a result of his excellent food regimen, he wouldn’t have made it through the first cut. He recovered from the surgery in record time and was back home in perfect health before anyone thought he’d be able to get off the IV. The surgeon we had (as well as all of the other vets we use) is world-renowned, and in the top of his field. I figure, if he says we owe it all to the food, then who are we to argue? We’ve sent our thanks to Innova and Nupro, and even to the company that makes the yogurt we use. (We use only full-fat, plain, organic yogurt from Horizon–low fat or non-fat give a lot of dogs the runs, including ours.)
All this being said, I’m sure you’ll make the right decision for your bully babies. Good luck, and I hope I’ve give you some good information to work with. It literally makes me teary to think of our baby boy, clinging to me pitifully like a koala bear while I sat in the patient room for the emergency vet to come in, and the only thing that makes me feel better is remembering that he is okay now and it is all thanks to the good people who make his food.
**Added note:
I’m happy to help! You (or anyone) are welcome to email me directly if you have specific questions or would like some advice. There aren’t many bully issues I haven’t dealt with or heard of, and if there are, I have a great support network of other experienced bully owners I can ask.
Just in case you haven’t done a food switch before, here’s the rule of thumb. If you have, and you already know this, feel free to ignore! 🙂
First day: 1/4 new food, 3/4 old food. Second day: 1/2 new food, 1/2 old food. Third day: 3/4 new food, 1/4 old food. Fourth day: all new food.
If your bully has major tummy upset issues, however, I recommend a 1/8 change process. (First day: 1/8 new food, 7/8 old food, Second day: 2/8 (1/4) new food, 6/8 (3/4) old food, etc etc).
After the food change is complete, give it about 2 weeks to see real changes. It won’t be immediate and will take almost a month to really show the drastic change, but within 2 weeks the poops should firm up again if they were soft during the change, and an improvement in skin and folds should show themselves.
Good luck!

Betty asks…
How much would you pay for guaranteed dog training?
How much would you pay for in home obedience dog training lessons that comes with a guarantee of success, which means, if after 6 lessons the owners are not completely satisfied, we will keep coming back for free until you are. Please state what currency. Thanks 🙂
admin answers:
This will only work if you practise what you are taught every day, you cannot expect to learn a lot in six lessons. Do not pay for six lessons in advance, as he may use rough methods which you will object to.

How do i get into dog training?
I am 25 and do voluntary work at a local animal shelter and have been there for 8 years and have unofficially re-trained a lot of rescue dogs and rehomed them successfully, but my friends believe i should do dog training professionally, how can i go about this?

Where is there good agility dog training in south jersey?
My dog is an English Springer Spaniel and is 4 years old. Ever since he was a puppy he loves to jump. I actually build my own jumps with chairs and rakes and jump him! He’s jumped up to 3’6 and about 4 or 5 feet wide! He really has the potential to be an agility dog. I’ve been looking online for places but the only thing that comes up is dog training and boarding. Any good places around the south jersey area that I could look at?
admin answers:
You got tons of places all over NJ.
My 1st thought goes to Clever K9 in Lakewood. You can google others there’s JAG (Jersey Agility Group) to name another.
I travel to Northern NJ for my agility classes, up in Randolph. Are you close to the PA border?
You can find an agility training faclitity thru the following:

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Coupons
David asks…
Healthy Dog food and Treats?
I have a Female, 6 month old, 60lb Mountain Mutt. (German Shepherd, Akita, Bull mastiff, Pit bull, Coyote)
She goes through a 5 pound bag of dog food in about 4 days. I’ve been feeding her Purina One Lamb and Rice Formula.
I would like to find out what kinds of foods have the most packed Protein, Vitamins, Minerals, ect…
I would also like to know of some human foods that are good to mix in with her dry and wet dog food. (egg, cottage cheese, fish oil, ect.)
I would also appreciate a list of healthy, natural dog treats, bones from butchery’s, ect.. that are good for puppy’s.
I would appreciate food that are natural and organic, i only want the best for my baby girl who is growing very very fast, i want her to be as happy healthy and strong as humanly (dog-ily) possible.
Please be as detailed as possible, i would also appreciate a list of foods to stay away from.
admin answers:
A really good brand is Wellness large breed puppy food and then at one yr old, switch to Wellness large breed adult
its natural with no corn, by product or fillers
( since it doenst contain fillers, dogs tend to need to less kibble to feel full and the food last longer)
5 star rated brand
my dogs love it n never looked better
wellnesspetfood.com for more info and store locater
and if u join the mailing club, they send out coupons every month
stay away from chocolate,onions,grapes/raisons,
mixing veggies and ground beef is fine, but when u have a high quality brand like wellness, adding other food isnt needed unless its to change the taste of the food cuz dogs tend to get bored eating the same thing
wellness carries great canned food that my dogs go crazy for, and also carry healthy treats
adding canned pumkin, chicken broth, fish oil, cheese and eggs are great to spruce up thier dinner every once in a while, but again not necessary
good luck!
Mary asks…
What to avoid when vegetarian… Help!?
I’m hoping to be vegetarian! However I have never been told about it in specifics and am not very educated under this topic…
Obviously avoid meat, rennet in cheese? & gelatin?
are there other things that are not so obvious to avoid? And I’ve heard there are there some alcohols that I can’t drink if I’m vegetarian? Just some info on this would be great please and hopefully I can educate myself a little more and become successful in doing so!?
admin answers:
If you want to be a vegetarian, first decide which type of vegetarian diet you want to choose.
Since you are making a transition into a vegetarian diet, I suggest a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet. I have been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for over 4 years, and it’s very easy to follow.
What to avoid:
Meat, fish, seafood, poultry, frosted poptarts(contain pork gelatin-unfrosted poptarts are okay),
Kraft & Velveeta Cheese(contains rennet), McDonald’s fries(contains beef flavoring), and Tropicana omega 3 orange juice(contains fish gelatin) and fruit cocktails that have cherries in it(most have carmeine aka beetles).
What you can eat:
Fruits, vegetables, nuts, rice, eggs, dairy, and honey.
Look for these products at the frozen section and produce section of your supermarket.
Products to look for in the supermarket:
Boca, Morningstar Farms, Light life, Tofurky, Veggie Patch, Worthington, Quorn, Amy’s Kitchen, and Annie’s Homegrown. Michelina’s has a list of vegetarian t.v. Dinners on their website and their entrees are only a dollar and you can get coupons off their website, too.
Horizon cheese and organic valley cheeses are suitable for vegetarians.
The companies listed above sell veggie burgers, veggie dogs, vegetarian dinner roasts, vegetarian Indian food, and other products.
If there is a Seventh Day Adventist bookstore in your area, they carry worthington mock meats.
You could also order the worthington dinner roast on-line for thanksgiving, if they don’t carry it in your area. The Quorn veggie turkey is also good with campbell’s mushroom gravy(avoid the heinz gravy as it contains beef stock). Pepperidge Farm cornbread stuffing is vegetarian, too.
Fast-food options: Burger King Veggie burger without mayo and with fries and a drink
Papa John’s pizza is made with microbial enzymes.
Taco bell bean burritos and crunch wrap supremes without sour cream and with potatoes instead of beef is also good.
If you ever come to New York City, or if you live in New Jersey or Florida, Golden Krust is a restaurant serves soya patties that look like Jamaican beef patties. They also carry vegetable turnovers that look like beef patties, too. They taste good with coco bread.
Chinese takeout: battered and deep fried sesame bean curd with either white rice or vegetable fried rice and broccoli.
Other meal options: Eggplant parmesan, spaghetti with Quorn soy free veggie balls, plantain turnovers with rice and beans, brown stew soya chunks with rice and beans, etc

What do you feed your dogs?
I was at PetSmart today and realized the only semi good dog food there way Blue Buffolo. I was completely shocked and appauled. I feed EVO and would never harm my dog by feeding Iams, Purina, Kibble N Bits, Ol Roy, Science Diet, Max, Ekanuba, or etc. Why do people feed them these kinds is it ignorance or price? My EVO isn’t much more exspensive the Science Deit but, is 100% better.

BTW, Ceasers in on the worst list too it’s just wasn’t on that perticular one.
You obviously know nothing about high quality dog foods. When a high protein dog food is introduced it can cause diarrhea at first due to the high proteins.
admin answers:
IF you are going to feed your dog Science Diet ….save your money and just feed him a cardboard box. IT is basically the same thing.
I have researched this in depth since my poor dog died of kidney failure due to poor quality dog food!!(this is the only reason I answer these questions … to try and save a dogs life or at least to not let him/her suffer because of bad food)
Fromm Dog Food is Great for dogs and cats …http://www.frommfamily.com/ $42- $45 per 30 lb bag
NO fillers….some good quality grains….NO corn….gluten or by-products or wheat
ALL human grade food….fruits…veggies and probiotics!!WHOLE fruits and veggies!!!! Just like the kind we get at our grocery stores!
Check it out you wont regret it !FROMM 4 STAR product line is the best!!!!!!!
Http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/TOTW has a high protein content (not recommeded for non athletic dogs)
Taste of the Wild contains Ethoxyquin which is a toxic fish preservative. (TOTW says that the cooking process kills all of it but it scared me away from their product)
around $42 for a 30 lb bag …. Its the cheapest 6 star food ..
Http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ lots of great dog food choices on this site !!
Orijen and Welness are great but it is $60 – $80 for a 30 lb bag…high protein as well ..not good for non athletic dogs(IMO)Orijen is WAY to high in protein for a non working/non-agility dog ..(IMO)
Fromm Is what my puppy gets it has a lower protein % and great ingredients! 5 outta 6 stars due to lower protein (but most dogs should not have high protein levels …. It makes their kidneys work overtime for no reason)
You can get it online and if you go to the website you can find stores near you .. They wont be at walmarts and the like… They are in feed stores .. Agway..tractor supply stores etc
IF your dog is not going to be a hard working/agility dog all this high protein can do more harm than good in the long run,,, you wont notice it now but it can take its toll on a dogs kidneys as it ages.(IMO)
http://4healthdogfood.tripod.com/
there is also a brand called 4health at the tractor supply store.. It is only $30 for a 30 lb bag.. And it seems to be of good quality. (not as good as the foods mentioned above but it good for the price if you are on a tight budget.)
also of you go to http://www.tractorsupply.com you can get a printable $5 off coupon!!
They have tons of low and high end foods there(including TOTW and 4 Health)

Your Questions About Dog Training Boulder
Joseph asks…
Why do people blame it on the pits? They just act like they’re trained to?
People actualy think banning these dogs is a good thing……are you serious? sounds like a bunch of biased BS to me! The top three reasons being:
1.Pit bulls have an average score tested by the American temperament society that beats even the “ultimate family dog“, the Golden Retriever.
2.Pit Bulls are no more dangerous than any strong and large dog. They just happen to attract more irresponsible and abusive owners than any other breed.
3. A breed ban will only remove Pit Bulls from good people’s homes and leave them in the hands of animal abusers who couldn’t care less about the law.
So tell me, what is banning the breed gonna help? I have two pits and they’re just big babies. I have never had such loyal dogs. Pit Bulls adore to please their loved ones and respond very well to positive reinforcement. They are intelligent dogs, who easily make associations. They can be a lot of fun to train and often do very well in obedience competitions.
OK Greekman, I think environment is actualy the keyword. What your saying is that these genetics are both physical and mental……..I think not! Sure they’re bred to be muscular but you cant breed mean. Your saying if you took the two meanest people on earth and they mated that automaticly makes their offspring buck nuttie. NO WAY! not if they grew up away from their mean parents in a good home right. Think about it, do you and your parents see eye to eye at all times and do everything the same(sports, hobbies, likes, dislikes,FIGHTING)…NO! You are your own individual (just like dogs) and most of your mental characteristics came from your environment…..not your genetics.
admin answers:
BSL has already been proven to not work. There is not a single case of it actually being effective. It is all based on ignorance. A good example is Boulder Colorado. They banned pit bulls even though labs were the #1 biter in theri area. Their bite/attack statistics have not dropped but have increased.
Those for BSL dont understand the fact that any dog can be dangerous. It is only a matter of time before they add just about every medium to large sized dog to the list.
I would just like to add, someone mentioned that pits bred for fighting are low to the ground. This is not true. They are usually tall and lanky. A dog shorter to the ground would have to work harder than a taller dog and would run out of air faster. The taller they are the more athletic they are likely to be. Take a look at some of the old time gamedogs… Jeep, Hunter Red, Dirty Mary, Reno…. They are all tall and lanky.
Greekman… APBTs are not bred for their aggressiveness to other dogs but for gameness.
Something that way too many people believe that is a complete myth is that APBTs are trained to fight. They are not and they cannot be forced if they dont want to.
Bloodlines do play a big part in breeding dogs. If you breed a dog that shows aggression towards people chances are very high that the pups will be people aggressive as well (which is why people mean APBTs are culled.
Traits are passed down through breeding which is why you sometimes see a herding dog that has never been trained to herd, herd, and a pointer that has never been trained to point game out will point at the robin in your tree.

What are some things to do in Phoenix, AZ?
I’m going on vacation there soon
admin answers:
The Phoenix Zoo, The Botanical Gardens, Mystery Castle, Wildlife World Zoo and Aquarium, The Phoenix Art Museum, Fashion Square Mall, Hike Piestewa Peak or The South Mountain Park, The Heard Museum, tour Chase Field of University of Phoenix stadium, see a Suns game, ride the metro rail and bar hop, Scottsdale Art Walk, if you’re here in December Glendale Glitters is fun, Boyce Thompson Arboretum, GOLF, Taliesin West (Frank Lloyd Wright’s camp), go antiquing in historic downtown Glendale, in the spring you can go to a spring training baseball game, the Challenger Space Center, Bondurant Racing School of High Performance Driving if you love the thrill of speed., dog races at the Greyhound park, horse races at Turf Paradise, McCormick Ranch Railroad Park, or Encanto Park’s Enchanted Island. There is a ton of stuff to do in Phoenix and the surrounding area, and if you are here long enough, get on I-17 and go north and visit Montezuma’s Castle, the ghost town of Jerome, the lovely cities of Prescott and Sedona. You could spend hours going to all the fun little places in Arizona…one of my favorites is Crown King, but you have to have a durable vehicle and expect the trip to take all day because the average speed limit is about 15-20 mph on one lane, gravel roads that narrow in places that you feel like you’re going to scrape your car’s side on the boulders on the side of the road. Have fun on your vacation!

If you change into a BETTER dog food brand will it get a longer life span?
I fed my dog Purina food and I’m changing to Blue Buffalo.I heard corn and other ingredients make dogs life span shorter, but if i change brand will it make her life span longer?
admin answers:
Many things figure into the lifespan. Good nutrition is certainly one of them. The odds are much better if you feed a quality food.
Charles asks…
what is a dogs average life span?
I have a chihuahua and Maltese mix and I would really like to know what is a dogs average life span?
admin answers:
My family has always had a lot of dogs (chihuahuas mainly) and if they’re kept out side they usually live about 9-12 years but, if they’re in a house I’ve heard some can live to be 15 or 16 or so.
Richard asks…
How long will home made food increase my labradors life expectancy?
So my labrador is 5 and from ages 0-1 90% of his food was dry dog food. Over time it became less and less and we gave him more and more home made food. from ages 3-5 only around 50% of his food was dry food and the rest was home made food. At that point I already knew about the dangers of dry food. He is about 5 and a half now and I have completely switched him to a home made diet. We still have dry food but it is almost never used. And YES, it is a healthy diet of a mixture of fresh meat, vegetables, and other stuff. Its not just table left overs. It is as clean and healthy as all those internet articles reccomend. I am just wondering how long will it extend his life? There was this one video that said that dogs are actually supposed to live until they are 27 but because of dry food they live a lot less. I highly doubt that is true (wish it was). Labradors generally live to be 14-15. And my one is extremely well bred and he has no health issues (took him for a vet check up 2 days ago). So how many years will a natural home made diet increase your dogs life span?
admin answers:
IMO feeding him home made food will not make one iota difference to how long a dog lives.
My pals lab has just died at 14 years old and was fed on commercial dried dog food all his life.
Labs do NOT and never have lived for 27 years and neither do any other dogs except in very very exceptional circumstances and then they are normally small dogs. 14 is a very good age for Labrador.
Once a dog reaches 10 or 11 many get age related complaints (arthritis, cancer) just like humans do which contributes to how long they live. Keeping your Labrador lean and fit will prolong his life much more then a home made diet. Jmo.

Your Questions About Dog Training Classes Denver
Lizzie asks…
yorkie questions!??!!??! :)?
I have some yorkie questions.
I am getting one in about four months.
are they good with other dogs?
cats?
grooming?
price?
health problems?
I live in the denver area, have any recommendations on where I should get one?
anything else you want to let me know!
oh yeah and any websites or chain stores that carry cute dog clothes?
I dont want to dress my animal, but those stores always have the cutest leashes & collars!
admin answers:
They are good with other dogs if they are well socialized as a puppy with the other dogs. If they are not properly socialized as a puppy then they can be snappy towards other dogs. Since they are a small dog they can easily be afraid of larger dogs if they are not introduced to many as a puppy. Taking your dog to a puppy class at a dog training school would be best. They learn to play with other dogs and they learn body language of other dogs. Your puppy should be in puppy class before it is 16 weeks of age so that you don’t miss the puppy’s socialization period.
Whether a dog is good with a cat depends on a couple of things. First is whether or not the cat knows how to socialize with a dog. If a cat doesn’t know how to read a dog’s body language, then the cat will run and be chased. If the cat knows to just stand still, the dog almost always will just sniff the cat and walk away since it isn’t any fun when its not moving. It also depends on the dog. Some dogs have absolutely no interest in cats. Others think cats are the greatest toy in the world. My dog was raised with a kitten at the breeder’s that he used to wrestle with. Now he thinks all cats want to play with them, but most don’t since he can get overexcited and may look threatening to cats who don’t like dogs. If you already have a cat and you are getting a puppy, keep the two separated at first. Slowly introduce your puppy to the cat and make sure you are in control of the situation, so that if your cat gets to frightened you can separate them again. You can also start letting the cat in the room while you are playing with and distracting the puppy. You will also want to teach your puppy to come to you even when he is approaching the cat.
Yorkies need to see a professional groomer every 6 weeks to 3 months since their coat gets very long quickly. If you want to keep the long coat, be prepared to brush it multiple times a day since it gets knotted very easily. A puppy cut on the yorkie is cute though and is much easier to take care of.
For a purebred yorkie it is usually $800 to $3000, but it could be more or less. If you go to a reputable breeder it will probably be somewhere in the $1200 to $2000 range.
Yorkies do have a tendency to have early tooth decay. Make sure to brush their teeth and continue to keep an eye on the teeth. If there is a lot of tartar, get the teeth cleaned by a vet so that they stay healthy and do not need to be removed. Oral health is very important for dogs (like it is for humans). Yorkies also can have very fragile bones. You need to be careful that your yorkie doesn’t fall down the stairs, off the bed or couch. Many people will get little steps so that the yorkie has a way off the furniture rather than jumping since this can injure them.
If you want a puppy then get one from a breeder. Search for breeders in your area. If you want an adult dog or are open to rescuing a puppy, then look into breed specific rescues in your area. You can find all of these just by searching google with your city.
Yorkies are good little dogs. They can be a little yappy or snappy if not brought up properly and not socialized with lots of different dogs, people and situations.
Bark and Fitz is a small dog company and they sell some really cute items. I’m not sure how much clothing they have, but they definitely have a wide variety of leashes and collars. I’m not sure if their inventory is on line, but there are quite a few of their stores around these days.
Good luck and enjoy your yorkie!

admin answers:
Your best bet is to give them a call. They sound like they have a better program then the box stores. Also ask about the training techniques used and the experience of the trainer(s). You might want to sit on a class or two also to get a feel for the type of training. Sounds like a good overall program for household training.
Mark asks…
What do you think of the class action lawsuit against Petland for selling sick puppy mill dogs?
The Humane Society is going for a class action lawsuit against Petland for scheming to sell sick puppies bred in filthy puppy mills and conning customers into believing the puppies came from reputable breeders.
Last year Denver Dumb Friends League got 90 breeding poodles from an awful puppy mill in Oklahoma. We got one of those dogs and while she is precious, she was two years-old and a nervous wreck because she had never been around people, had never been in a building, had never been off of the dirt ground, hadn’t been fed for long periods of time and had to fight among the other dogs crammed in her cage for what little food was available. She was never potty trained and the dogs lived in urine soaked dirt and fecal material. She had a large injury on her rear-end where it appears a dog bit her when fighting for food. When the dogs were rescued, the rescuers found that the live dogs were eating the dead dogs, so it makes sense to me that another dog decided my dog was fair game for dinner. Her fur is not going to grow back on that spot.
Four months later and my dog has nearly completed potty training. She is still uneasy around people, but she no longer shakes. She still can’t be near other dogs, even when dogs show signs of friendliness. My dog was even afraid of a twelve year-old teacup poodle with no teeth. She may always be afraid of dogs. She tries to hide her food and is afraid of eating in front of anyone. We now feed her outside, while we remain inside, so she can eat without fear. Her digestion system is finally returning to normal.
So, excuse me for being a bit biased, but I think this lawsuit is a good thing.

admin answers:
Stopping puppymills is always a good thing but the HSUS has no reason to sue, they did not buy sick puppies. It seems to me it is just another way for the HSUS to profit from the abuse of animals, just like they did when Michael Vick was arrested.
The only way to stop puppymills and BYBs is for people (consumers) to realize their pets are not disposible and keep them for the duration of their lives instead of just while they are small, young, cute and convenient. If they did this there would be no market for puppies so there would be no profit and it would end puppymills and BYBs so it is the people(consumers) that keep puppymills and BYBs in business allowing them to subject animals to horrible conditions and abuse.
People need to wake up and stop the atrocities, not rely on PETA or the HSUS to stop it for us because in the end we may not like the outcome of their way!!

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Sensitive Stomachs
Sandra asks…
Has anyone heard of Timberwolf organic dog food?
I have been researching the internet to find the right food for my doggies. I want to get the timberwolf organic dog food, but I dont know which kind to get? the ocean blue one seems to be the most popular, but which would you recommend I get? if you dont care for this brand of food please tell me why and recommend something else. thank you for your help.
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
additional question:
is timberwolf organics a good food for cats as well?
admin answers:
Timberwolf Organics is one of the best brands of dog food available. In terms of quality of ingredients, it can only be rivaled by few others.
The only problem I can think of is that if you have a dog with a sensitive stomach he or she might find it hard to tolerate the richness of a food like Timberwolf. This is food is also very nutrient/ingredient dense so you only have to feed small amounts — it is high in calories. Certain Timberwolf formulas are also high in fat and protein. For the average adult dog, a maintenance formula is best. The high protein/fat formulas are more suited to very active dogs.
I would recommend the Ocean Blue, Dakota Bison or Southwest Chicken for the average dog.
Sharon asks…
what is the best brand of dog for for pups and dogs?
im am feeding my almost 8 week old pup purina original kind
then is science diet good ?
admin answers:
If it is financially possible go with a organic and grain free diet. If grocery store brand is what is budgeted for, go for Purina One Salmon and Sweet Potato (sensitive stomach formula I think). If there is room to spend, look into Orijens, Pinnacle, Taste of the Wild, Merrick, and even Blue is not a half bad food.
Remember to make your diet change only 25% every 5-7 days, so essentially it should take you just under a month to change foods.
Lizzie asks…
dog has really bad gas?
I know this is kind of a sillier question but still….
Has anyone found any like natural remedies to help with a gassy dog?
My dog‘s food (Innova… which i’ve heard other people say this is a side effect) is causing her to get really horribble smelling gas.
I do not want to change food because she has a really sensitive stomach, she loves this food, it gives her tons of energy, and this is the only complaint.
Just wondering if anyone out there has found anything that has helped their dog.
admin answers:
Low fat plain organic yogurt. One spoonful per meal. It helps during the digestion process, when the kibble is being broken down and releases air.
I have been using this with my dog for a long time and he has no gas.

Your Questions About Dog Training Colorado
Daniel asks…
Should i feel guilty for wanting another dog?
I use to live in colorado and i moved to pennsylvania. When i did i had to sell my dog, tip. He was the coolest beaggle. He would climb trees, hunt, and jump fences an get on my roof. Im saving for another dog bcuz i cant stand being without a dog but should i feel guilty for wanting another dog when he was so loyal and protective of me?
admin answers:
They most certainly allow Beagles in Pennsylvania …. You did NOT have to sell your dog because you moved.
Do not get another dog until you are ready to make a life time (for the dog) commitment to the dog. You don’t sell a dog because they are inconvenient.
Only when you are prepared to commit to the dog for its lifetime should you get one. That means – if you move, the dog goes with you. If it is sick, you take it to the vets. If it develops some bad habits, you train it.
A dog depends on you. If you move, you make 100% sure that the place you buy/rent will allow dogs.
A dog should be a member of your family, not something easily disposed of when you get tired of it.
Lisa asks…
Should I fly the dogs or send them by train? What can I do?
I need to get my boyfriends (ex, maybe) dogs back to him in colorado. I live in florida. I read that is it very unsafe to fly the dogs, but there are no trains to take them either. If I did fly them, what would I need to do so? HELP!
admin answers:
I flew my cats from Maryland to Frankfurt, Germany and they did fine. It depends on the time of year (Feb for me) and the airline. Contact a few airlines and see what they say. It may cost you an arm and leg to do so. I paid 100 dollars a cat but thats when I was flying. I think alone it costs more.
William asks…
How can i get my puppy to “go” on the puppy pad?
my dog goes on the floor, hes a puppy but its gross i need him on a puppy pad desperately plz help!
admin answers:
Hi, I have two small dogs that are trained both to use their litter box or to go outside. If I’m home they go out. If I’m not they are confined in the bathroom with their beds and water and with their litter box. So their boxes are just large storage box (maybe 2’x3′ or a bit smaller) with puppy pad in the bottom – I use just a few layers of newspaper now. All the pet stores sell a spray product that leaves a scent (you can’t smell it though, thank goodness), which tells the dogs, this is where go to pee or poo. I guess the scent must be like that one spot in the yard they always go to. Anyhow, it is a bit pricey, but it takes very little and then after a short training time, you no longer even need to use it, they just know where they go. I still have 3/4 of the original bottle I trained them with so start with the small size. So the girls never have accidents in the house – either ask to be let out or use the boxes.
To those who say if you litter box, or pad train a dog, it will go all over the house, it just isn’t true. I guess if you are careless in training then perhaps dogs just think they can go anywhere. But if you are careful and use this spray to help them get the idea, then they just go in the box, not everywhere they want. I think the puppy pad inside the ‘box’ helps them to define the space they are suppose to use and they learn to better ‘aim’. Also with the plastic storage box, it is easy to spray with disinfectant and wipe clean should things ‘runith over’. Both little girls are meticulous with their dual routines and don”t go everywhere around the house – just outside or box..
The two dogs are tiny, and just don’t have bladder enough to last very long although they are adult. In the winter, I have a patio umbrella set-up near the back door. I ‘scoop’ the snow under it so they have a grass place outside to go too. They are just too small to plow their way through the snow and in Colorado we have a lot of snow! Ha ha
Anyhow, look for that scent spray and it helps completely. It is sold right next to the spray that is used for “DONT pee or poo here”.
Good Luck.

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Amazon
George asks…
how much does it cost for an adopted parrot?
it’s probably going 2 be a macaw 😛 plus i need suggestion on a tropical colorful bird… hehe 😀
admin answers:
That depends. Most shelter charge something called a re-homing fee, which covers the costs they incurred while the bird was in their care. Our amazon cost $350 in adoption fees. Then you have the fact many avian shelter require classes on parrot care and require people to gain hands on experience with large parrots before taking one home. This ensures they are prepared for the loud screaming, mess and bites a parrot will inevitably be doing. It also gives them a Idea of how much they are getting into, and the option to decided a large parrot is not right for them. The money from the classes goes to caring for the birds in the shelter. These classes sometimes cost, and if I remember back to when we adopted our bird (5 years ago) classes were around $200. You may not have to take them (we didn’t) if you already have years of experience with large parrots.
Past the actual adoption/class fess, you will need to buy a breed-appropriate cage. For large parrots, these cages START at $300 and only go up from there. Putting a large bird in a small cage is not fair to the bird, and it is a absolute must you have a large enough cage. Then you look at food expenses. Our amazon goes through a $20 bag of high-quality seed about once a month. You don’t want to skimp and get cheap food, because the nutritional quality won’t be the same, and many birds refuse to eat pellets. Past seed, parrots of any size need fresh fruit and vegetables every day. This is not an option. They need a wide array of fresh produce that can easily tack $10-$15 onto your food bill every week (you should go with organic, as not to expose your birds to pesticides). Treats for training and reinforcing positive behaviors (which is lifelong) are $15 or so for a small bag. Then we get into toys. Some toys can be cheap (like baby toys from garage sales), but parrot toys from the petstore (and they will need those too for mental happiness), cost between $20-$50 PER TOY. Toys should be rotated in and out of the cage several times a week to keep your bird occupied. They destroy toys quite fast, so frequent replacement is necessary. Past toys and food, parrots need to see specialized avian vets. A routine checkup (which they have to have once a year) will cost you $200+ just to walk through the door. Any injuries/illnesses, and it only goes up from there. When my moms bird broke her foot 10 or so years ago, getting it fixed cost well over $1500. Taking them to a regular vet isn’t an option, regular vets cannot provide proper care, and many won’t even see large parrots.
While you may be able to scrape enough together to take one home, large parrots are a lifelong commitment, and are extremely costly pets after they get home. Only those 100% dedicated to providing care for these animals for the next 60+ years deserve to have one. Our amazon is a major cost factor. We knew this going in. We know he is all we can afford to provide proper care for, so as much as we’d love a whole flock of them, we realize the cost limitations. You need to sit down and look at every factor before taking a parrot home. This includes not just cost, but the time and dedication needed. Parrots are highly intelligent animals, right on par with great apes and dolphins. They can be taught to speak in context, and identify shapes/colors so many consider them the most intelligent animals. This intelligence proves problematic for many people used to caring for dogs and cats. Large parrots are not beginner birds. Many shelters have plenty of smaller parrots along with the big guys who are just as much in need of a loving home, only without the greater cost factor. Consider carefully before bringing one of these beautiful animals home. Volunteer at an avian shelter to see if these amazing animals are something you would consider keeping in your own home, or are better left to those who can provide proper care.
Lizzie asks…
What do i give my diabetic dog?
my dog is diabetic and idk what to feed him hlppppppp
admin answers:
The number one solution for your diabetic dog is to feed him or her a diet of homemade foods so you can track of exactly how much carbohydrates and sugar they are getting. A homemade diet of natural foods isn’t as expensive or as much work as you might think. I mean, you are probably already preparing meals for yourself/your family at least some of the time. Check out the many Websites with advice and easy recipes for natural dog food.
If you cannot avoid commercially manufactured dog food altogether, it is better to give your pooch good quality canned food that is low in carbohydrates and low in sodium. Canned dog food made especially for diabetic dogs is a safer way to go, but make sure it is high in protein. Even better if the food is organic. Since diabetes affects liver functions–and thus the immune system–the liver is less able to handle additives often found in commercial dog food. Check the ingredients on the label.
Most dry dog foods are largely made up of simple carbohydrates (sugars and/or starches). You are looking to drastically decrease your diabetic dog intake of carbs, especially simple carbs. There are some dry diabetic dog foods that are generally safe, but still check the ingredients to make sure it is high in protein and vegetables. Even so, dry dog food, diabetic or not, should never be the sole form of food–there is just not enough nutrition in it.

Make sure sugar or its other forms (sucrose, fructose, syrup, etc.) is not on the list of ingredients. No baked goods in the diet either, including most dog biscuits.
Keep in mind, also, that the amount of food that your dog eats must be carefully monitored. It is better for diabetic dogs that they eat 2 or 3 smaller meals a day than one large meal to keep blood sugar levels even. Hey, Tod M. You’re right about the small meals don’t know if you were being serious or not!
Before making any changes to your dog’s diet, it is important to consult a vet about the diabetic dog food diet your pet needs, and give those foods that your dog tolerates well.
Hope this helps.

Your Questions About Dog Training Books
Helen asks…
Can anyone recommend any dog training books?
Can anyone recommend any good Yorkshire terrier training books.I’m getting a puppy and would like it to be trained well. Thank you.
admin answers:
“It’s Me or the Dog: How to Have a Perfect Pet” by Victoria Stilwell.
She uses positive methods that are very easy for anyone with any level of dog experience to execute. For example, you don’t want your dog to jump on you? Turn around and face the opposite direction when the dog is jumping, fold your arms over your chest, and completely ignore the dog and be totally BORING. When a dog is jumping it usually wants attention so if you show the dog that jumping gets him exactly the opposite of what he wants, he’ll stop.
Easy, right? 🙂
Plus, positive methods are much better for a dog’s mental health and help to build a dogs self confidence.
Another one I highly recommend: “Before and After You Get Your Puppy: The Positive Approach to Raising a Happy, Healthy, and Well-Behaved Dog” by Ian Dunbar. Not quite as accessible as the Victoria Stilwell book, but this guy is one of the top professionals in the dog training world and has a PhD in animal behavior. He is also the guy who is the father of the concept of puppy obedience class.
Good luck, and good for you for actually wanting to train your Yorkie, rather than treat it like a fashion accessory 🙂

What ate some good dog training books out there?
My one year old maltese needs some training in some areas, and I wanted to try to train him myself instead of behavior classes because they are SO expensive. What are some good books that helped you or that you know of? Also, what is a good way to socialize my dog, besides the training classes, if any? He barks and growls at other dogs and sometimes people.

Beyond Basic Dog Training by Diane Bauman
Donna asks…
How much do I need to walk my 4lb. toy poodle?
I have a sweet, playful and energetic year old toy poodle named Thor. I take him out once in the morning and evening to go potty and he gets an hour long walk at noon everyday. Recently, I have been reading dog training books which insist that dogs need a lot more exercise than I have been giving my little guy. I never thought of it as a problem as Thor is constantly chasing his toys around the apartment.
Is an hour long walk a day enough or do dogs need more exercise? Do small dogs need the same amount of exercise as big dogs?
admin answers:
It depends on the energy level of the dog, even small breeds such as terriers can need lots of exercise and you can get big dogs who are low energy and don’t need much, although there are exceptions in every breed.
If he lies down when you come home, he’s had enough exercise!
Low energy up to an hour a day, moderate energy 1-2 hours a day and high energy 3 hours, possibly more a day.

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Petsmart
George asks…
What to feed my dog so she has good nutrition ?
What is the best thing to feed my dog so she has good proper nutrition ?
She is a 12 kilo jack russell and she’s 3 years old.
admin answers:
Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to the dump cheap leftovers and things that aren’t safe for human consumption (from human food processing plants) into their foods. Will it kill your dog? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot.
Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.
Thankfully, there are some excellent dog foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human consumption.
Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Kibbles n’ Bits, Beneful, Ol’Roy.
Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae All Life Stages, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature’s Variety Prairie, Nature’s Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix, Timberwolf Organics.
Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you’re getting what you’re paying for. Less filler material means more concentrated nutrients… This means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!
Before following your vet’s food recommendation, keep in mind that vets get /very/ little nutritional training during their schooling. Besides that, what training they /do/ get is usually sponsored or taught by the crappy pet food companies! They also often get paid to sell some of their products at their clinics (Science Diet, Royal Canin etc.)
A great option is to go with an entirely grainless diet. Many of the high quality foods now put out grainless formulas. Some good grainless diets include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature’s Variety Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Merrick Before Grain, Canidae Grain Free All Life Stages, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now! And Sold Gold Barking At The Moon, Taste of the Wild.
Some pretty decent foods can even be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic, Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux Organix, Pinnacle, and Halo. If you can’t find a food, most of the high quality food brands have websites with store locators on them.
Another option, if you can’t find anywhere around you that sells good foods, is to order your pet food online. Here’s an excellent place to do so: http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/
Remember that foods should be switched gradually (mixing new slowly in with the old over about a two week period), especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies.
Another option for feeding dogs is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:

I need help choosing a better dog food?
Please help me choose a better quality dog food for my doggies. I have been feeding them beneful for the longest time now and I want to take them off of it asap as it is not giving them the proper nutrients they need and it has caused my female pitbull terrier to have an allergic reaction. and they have more gas and it is not healthy for neither of my dogs. so please give me some brands of food that you recommend I try. I was browsing the net and happen to find a few brands. which out of these brands do you recommend? Orijen, Canidae, Innova or Nature’s Variety?
Which one would be better for my dogs and which one are you sure that they would like?

Dog food is a controversial subject that causes a lot of conflict of opinions. There is no right or wrong, and really the “best” food is what works for your dog. One dog may thrive on a certain food while another dogs terrible on it. Does this make the food good or bad? Of course, the food is great for the dog who thrives on it and bad for the dog who does terrible on it.
My personal opinion is that dogs are carnivores and a low quality dry dog food that contains a minimal amount of meat and is full of grains, fillers and additives is NOT a suitable diet for a canine. A suitable diet in the ideal world would be whole raw foods, but for the average dog and owner a high quality dry food will have to do.
While this is not always strictly true, generally you get what you pay for with dog foods.
Anything by these brands; Eagle Pack, Canidae, Timberwolf Organics, California Natural, Innova, Solid Gold and Chicken Soup For the Pet Lovers Soul are high quality foods. Even some of the brands you can get in places such as PetSmart (Natural Balance, Nutro, etc.) are ok.
If you are in the UK, James Wellbeloved is probably the best easily available dog food on the market.
Avoid junk like Pedigree, Science Diet, etc. These foods contain little meat (and any meat that they do contain is poor quality) and rediculous amount of grains and fillers. Feeding high grain/high carb food is terrible for the health of your dog therefore they should be avoided at all costs

I’m looking for a high quality dog food for puppies. More in the meat factor, less on fillers. ?
This is my first dog/puppy in over 25 years and things have changed a lot. I’m looking for a high quality dog food that has a high protein content while being low on filler and additives. Please help!
She is a beagle mix. Currently 14 weeks old and 8 pounds. I want to gradually change her to the “better” food so that she doesn’t experience too many stomach problems.

Ken asks…
What are some ways that I can block my dogs off from a section of the lawn?
I have a small backyard that is fenced in. Unfortunatly, both of my dogs love to play and dig so my backyard went from a partial green grass to a dirt yard. I live in Colorado so the weather is very dry so its super hard to get grass without grass seed/fertilizer. I know for a fact that fertilizer is very dangerous to dogs and cayenne pepper does not keep them away. I was thinking of putting up a temp fence but didn’t know if there was another way that was possible? Like I said, both of my dogs enjoy digging so I would have to put the fence in the ground which would be very trouble some since this ground is like clay and very hard to dig in. And if I don’t put a fence up. How many hours would it take for the fertilizer to take affect? That a way, I know that my dogs can’t go in the backyard for x amount of hours. I just need to know what kind of options I have.
The back yard I have is a very small backyard. It could fit a 10X12 gazeebo with extra 5ft in length (that’s how small it is). If this is too small for dogs, tell the military that because I live on post. I take them for exercise once a week and the days I don’t take them to the dog park is when I play with them via toys. Since I live in a townhouse and both of my neighbors both have dogs, they dig to play with them because the dogs smell is different (I guess because they never leave them alone). So an invisable fence is mostly used for large fenced in areas. So an invisable fence might work. I really like the chicken wire idea. I have 2 puppies (1 is a 1 yr old and the other is 6 months) so both enjoy playing and have this huge energy. They’ll play for 2 hours in the backyard and as soon as the neighbors dogs go in the backyard, they get all excited and dig to get to them.

== the shock collar from a perimeter wire seems abit over the top but you gotta train them to you tune … It is very difficult to teach a dog parameters and this is a quick learning method …….. Any other way is just too difficult…….
John asks…
How can I help stop the ban of pit bulls in California and anywhere else in the United States?
I grew up around Pit bulls and we have have never had a problem with them biting or attacking anyone, while I know that isnt true for all Pit Bull owners I do know it’s all about how you raise up your dog. Just like children you have to train them the right way. Some dogs have problems being around other dogs because they are never around other dogs, some dogs have a problem being around children because they aren’t from a household that has kids. I just think it’s completely unfair to target a whole breed with no real evidence as to why? Cases of dog bites should not justify this because if that were the case there would be a lot more breed specific dog bans including your “loving” Labordors. Unless they can prove that pit bulls are genetically inclined to attack for no reason without the influence or training of an owner they have no right to ban they whole breed.
I’m looking for sincere pit bull lovers and owners to help stop this ridiculous law.
