Your Questions About Rough Collie Puppies
Betty asks…
How do i introduce my border collie puppy to my cat?
My cat is 14 months old and has live in our house for about a year.
And we are getting a border collie puppy.
What is the best way to introduce them to eachother
admin answers:
Keep the puppy under control, and make sure the cat can get away from the puppy when it wants to. Supervise, don’t let either get too rough or start chasing the other. Never leave them alone together until they are used to each other.
Don’t expect the cat to take to the dog immediately usually it takes a few days or even weeks.
John asks…
Why does our puppy walk around with a toy/bone and cry?
We have a young rough collie/blue merle mix puppy named Desi that has been doing something kind of weird. For some reason, for about the past month or so, he has been walking around with a bone or a toy in his mouth while whimpering. We’re not sure why he has been doing this. Does anyone know why? Or has anyone else had a dog do similar things?
admin answers:
I think it’s because he has nowhere to hid it..I bet if you let him out he will look for a spot to try and bury/hid it…mine hides it in a corner and tries covering it with air..lol..then she looks at me like ..did you see me? Lol..
George asks…
How much should my 8 week old puppy weigh?
She is a female rough collie and came from a litter of 6. She is currently 5.8 kg, is this about right? Thanks, all answers very much appreciated.
admin answers:
The weight may or may not be right. Body condition is what is important. You should be feeding a puppy chow now. Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.
Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. Your Questions About Collie
John asks…
How do you do you explain your dog is a collie, not a border collie?
Do you say, “standard collie” or the dreaded “lassie collie?” Or AKC collie? Just looking for the proper semantics..
Coop, my dogs are my children now that mine are grown.
admin answers:
The official name is “Collie” but it would not be improper when trying to explain to say “Rough Collie” or “Smooth Collie” as those are official varieties within the breed. Something like “She’s not a Border Collie, actually she’s a Rough Collie like Lassie was, but they do look a little similar, don’t they?”
That’s about my line when my Belgian Malinois gets the German Shepherd comments – “Actually he’s a Belgian Shepherd, but they do look a lot alike don’t they?”
Sometimes you just have to drop a soundbite and move on with life.
Jenny asks…
How much would you spend on a border collie in a year?
well, i might be getting a border collie but im not sure how much im going to spend on him in a year?…and you know when people feed there dog 3 bowls of food and then they change and give them 2 bowls…when should i start giving my dog 2 bowls a day?
admin answers:
Don’t measure their food in bowls for one. The amount of food you give is determined by activity level, age and size (or weight).
My border collie is on the small side, but is VERY active (about 25 lb). She gets a little less than a cup of a high quality kibble daily. I separated into two feedings since that’s what I do with my German Shepherd. My Border is 12 months, so it’s a good age to start the twice daily feeding routine. Puppies I normally feed 3 times a day (small amounts, divide their total amount recommended per day by 3 to know how much to feed).
Also, be conscious of your dog’s weight. If it’s gaining weight even though you exercise it regularly, you’re probably feeding to much–losing weight, then not enough.
These dogs are VERY high energy and WILL be destructive if you don’t give them adequate exercise and mental stimulation. I work with both my dogs EVERY day and walk them each twice a day for around 30 minutes. Between vet care, bedding or crate, a high quality kibble for adequate nutrition, training lessons, and toys, leashes, etc. I spend anywhere from $500-$1000 every year per dog. This of course does not include the adoption cost or unforseen medical problems. My GSD is a rescue, as is my Border, and he recently had to have hip surgery with a bill totaling around $1200.
You also will need monthly heart worm prevention medication and flea/tick prevention (cost for both depend on the size of your dog), and vaccinations when you adopt. There is a lot of initial cost when you first get the dog, but it does taper off after a while. For six months of heart worm medication for my Border, its around $30, and $35 for three months of flea and tick prevention. It’s MUCH cheaper to treat preventatively than to treat once they have worms, so DON’T skimp here.
Good luck with the new dog, they are great!
David asks…
How many puppies can a border collie have?
I want my boarder collie to have puppies and i want to know how many she might have?
admin answers:
They are BORDER-Collies – from the BORDER of Scotland.
Sheesh! :-0
BCs can have from ONE – a singleton, usually oversized –
to a dozen or more.
Anything over 10 is a very big litter.
Q –
Why do U want to breed Ur BC?
Has she been tested for Brucella? Negative?
Have U screened her for heritable problems?
Has she had OFA or Penn-HIP radiographs of hips + elbows?
Has she had CERF eye-exam + is she free of defects?
A CERF certificate is only valid 12 mos – it is an annual exam,
NOT by a ‘vet’ but by a board-certified k9 ophthalmologist.
BREED-specific Qs –
does she herd?
Compete in other k9 sports?
Is she a conformation-champion?
‘wanting to’ is not a valid reason – she needs to be WORTH breeding.
IOW – an exceptionally good example of both dogs in general,
AND her breed.
Good sires are only put to good Fs – so any local intact-M Border Collie
is not a ‘good’ potential sire. He, too, has to be screened + evaluated
as a worthwhile sire to create pups that are potentially BETTER THAN
either parent alone –
‘breed the best TO the best, and then hope for the best’ !
Also – do U have $$ for complications?
An emergency C-section is about $1200 for a BC-sized F.
That is without any blood transfusion or other extreme measures!

Steven asks…
What no kill shelters will allow you to make a donation in memory of deceased pet?
My friends dog passed away yesterday and I want to make a donation to a shelter to save aother dog’s life in memory of their dog. Do you know of any shelters that do this? A picture would be nice and a card from the shelter notifying them of what’s been done.
admin answers:
I watched Oprah last week and she visited PAWS Chicago. It is a no kill shelter and I believe you can donate there. If you will go to their website…they are awesome with animals. Animals are not kept in cages…they have their own actual rooms. They have a huge playground on top of their building….all fenced in, etc. Oprah sponsered a room in memory of her dog, Sophie and it is absolutely gorgeous. They have beautiful dog houses, the rooms are painted and the dogs and cats have more toys than they know what to do with. I’d check out their shelter if I were you.
Michael asks…
Why do some people pay alot of money for a pure breed dog when they can pick up 1 for free at an animal pound?
When you go to a dog pound, you’ll be saving their life. What could be more imporant than saving a dog’s life plus saving some money in the process too?
admin answers:
I wish I knew. Just think, if people would adopt more dogs from shelters or rescues, breeders wouldn’t breed as many puppies. Not as many purebred puppies equals more shelter adoptions equals fewer homeless animals equals a better world.
I think people buy purebred dogs as a status symbol so they can say, “I have a $700 pomeranian with papers. His parents were both best in class champions”. Yeah, great for you, but does the dog give a crap? He just wants to be a dog.
If people want to show off their dogs, why can’t there be dog shows for mixed breeds? I don’t care about my dog’s markings or his bone structure – I care that he’s healthy, happy and I love him for his personality. If mixed breeds could be judged on personality, cuteness and overall “awww” factor, I’d be the first to sign up. My dog doesn’t give a rats *** if he wins a blue ribbon; he wants to run, chase squirrels, roll in dead squirrels, eat milk bones and cuddle. That’s the way it should be. Everyone should have the opportunity to show off their “baby”, no matter what their lineage. They’re ALL wonderful.
I keep editing my answer because as I read some of the other answers, I get more and more upset. What do people want in a dog other than a good companion? Again, a dog is a dog no matter how much you want to pretend that they’re something else. If you want something to show off, get a freaking corvette or a Coach handbag. Yes, you may have to pay a fee to adopt a dog, but think about where that money goes! To save other homeless animals that ignorant people dump, don’t bother to spay or neuter and abuse! FYI – there are purebred dogs in shelters too! If you could selectively breed your children, would you do that too? Would you get rid of one of your children because they didn’t meet your standards? I hope not, but the more I read, the more I wonder….
Sorry, this is a really sore topic for me.

Your Questions About Rough Collie
Thomas asks…
At what age does a female rough collie go on heat for the first time?
I have a female rough collie, she is nine months old and has yet to go on heat. Is it still too early? Or could she be sterile?
admin answers:
Anywhere from 5 months to 15 months, but 8-9 is average.
While she is in heat–
For about 3 weeks, you will need b*tches britches, or doggie diapers. These are very expensive. You will also need a lot of carpet cleaner, and a good high quality carpet shampooer to clean up the mess that drips every where! AND she is giving off a very powerful scent that un-neutered males can smell for MILES around, and will jump fences to mate with her. (Spaying is cheaper.)
Please don’t breed.
Many people don’t realize how expensive and time consuming it is to breed. Breeders do NOT make any money. All breeds must have a series of health tests after they are 2 years old to determine if they are healthy enough to breed. If you don’t have this done, do not breed. PLEASE.
I bought a cute healthy dog, from cute healthy parents, and she only lived for a year before having MAJOR genetic health problems. It was very sad, and I truly wish that NO ONE goes through the same thing I did. Both of her parents are still alive and “healthy” according to the breeder– but they can still pass on genetic problems regardless. At only one year old, she became totally paralyzed in her hind legs, and could not control her bladder pr bowels. It was so sudden, and so unexpected. She has hip dyspasia, knee problems, and neurological problems. I am very angry with her breeder, and I’m sure you don’t want to be sued for selling bad pups.
Donald asks…
Help with grooming brushes for rough collie?
Im getting a rough collie pup in four weeks, and need a little help with what brushes i will need for grooming. So far on my list I have:
Slicker brush
Pin brush
Steel grooming comb
Matt splitter
Nail clippers.
Also thinking about buying a high powered pet blow dryer.
Anyone experience with grooming double coated breeds see anything I’ve missed? Any help appreciated thanks.
admin answers:
The best brush for a collie, with that super thick, long, double coat, is going to be an undercoat rake. Like this: https://www.llamaproducts.com/assets/product_pics/soft_grip_undercoat_rake.jpg
A slicker brush is also good to use, more so when the dog is a puppy and the coat hasn’t grown in. The undercoat rake is better when the coat is long.
A pin brush isn’t a great choice for a collie. Pin brushes are better for coats that are more of a medium length or are wiry.
The steel comb is another great choice, as it will get all the way down to the skin. The comb will be useful on areas like the feathers on the front legs and the tail.
Mat splitters can be sharp, so you need to be very careful when using them. If you brush the coat on a regular basis and make sure it doesn’t get matted, you won’t need one of these. You can also get a pair of thinning shears to cut out the matting instead, but you need to be careful with these as well.
If you plan on bathing your collie yourself, a force dryer is a MUST. It doesn’t just dry the dog, it is also a great way to blow dead undercoat off the dog and separates small mats as well.
Using corn starch on the coat also helps when you are brushing out a lot of undercoat. The corn starch lubricates the fur, so it makes it easier to get undercoat and tangles out. Just take a handful, rub it into the fur, and brush. It is messy, so do this outside.
When you brush out a dog that has a lot of coat, it is easier and more effective to start lower, like towards the foot at the bottom of the feathers. Get the bottom part brushed out, then start working in little sections going higher up. If you start high and work your way down, you just brush more undercoat onto the undercoat below it.
Edit: Don’t forget the armpit areas and behind the ears. Due to friction, collies get a lot of matting in their armpits, and it is much harder to get them out of this delicate area. The fur behind the ears is soft and silky, so often collies get big mats that form here.
For the nails, you can use clippers or get a Dremel. A Dremel is a rotary power tool that groomers use to file the nails down. Get one that runs on a battery, or if it a better quality one, use the low speed. Just be careful not to get fur caught in it, because it is a rotary tool.
Donna asks…
What is a dog breed that behaves similarly to rough collies?

How to teach my puppy to swim?
I have a lab mix puppy who is 6 months old. She loves the water. But yesterday we went swimming for the first time and she jumped in the water with no problem. But as she was trying to swim she looked like she was having trouble. She was swallowing a bunch of water and her front paws were out of the water trying to paddle. How can I train her to swim better? Should I invest in a dog life jacket?
admin answers:
Ignore any prescriptive advice. Your puppy will learn to swim when in the proximity of water at its own pace. If she’s already happy to jump in, (mine wasn’t) then she’s doing well, and is probably held back only by an intrinsic lack of coordination. Buying a life jacket will, more likely than not, slow down your puppies learning, although it may be a crucial investment if you’re not willing to dive in an fish her out if she starts sinking.
I found the best motivator to teach my half lab half golden retriever to swim was ducks. Okay, its not ethical to teach your dog to chase ducks, but they fly away and she’ll never catch one unless its injured. Once the dog sees ducks, it will try very very hard to get to them, figuring out swimming in the process.
To conclude, wait for her to grow a little older, and the coordination will come.
Sharon asks…
What kind of a life jacket can i get my puppy?
I have a 7 month of Boston terrior/ pug. I want to bring him swimming this summer and I want to put a life jacket on him. He loves taking baths so I think he will like the water but he is a small dog and I don’t want him to drown.. what is a good life jacket for my 20 pound bugg?
admin answers:
Doggles dog life jackets are especially made for pups, toy breed and small dogs, the most important thing is to measure and fit properly for comfort and safety. A snug fit is safest. Another very good brand especially made for tiny/small dogs is the Ezydog micro dog life jackets. Best to buy from a manufacturers who specialises in puppy dog life jackets, as they are especially designed.

Who is Alex Collier and why did he imply that the 30,000 children who disappear yearly are eaten by aliens?

James asks…
Did the last name Collier originate in Ireland?
i was just wondering because my last name is collier……and i want to claim some Irish heritage….lol…
admin answers:
Knowing the origin of your surname will not prove or disprove any Irish heritage. Glancing over the New York passenger list 1820-1957, I did see one that was listed as Irish. There are no doubt others. You have to realize if you go back to your great great grandparents, your surname is only 1/16th of what you are.
Actually, if you can go back 20 generations and for a lot of people that will be sometime during the last melennium, you are directly descended from over a milion individuals. It pyramids. However, the numbers can vary because probably back in your family tree there were distant cousins that married. So your 8x great grandfather in one line might be your 10x great grandfather in another.
It also pyramids coming down from your ancestors. So fella, you come from a great big family.
Are you rich? I might be kin to you.

Your Questions About Rough Collie Rescue
Linda asks…
How can I get my rescue dog to play and stop laying down 24/7?
I just adopted a 5 year old chihuahua rescue who was abused and used for breeding, living her life in a tiny cage. She is so sweet and although timid, she has warmed up to me. But I worry that she is depressed. She has been checked by the vet and is healthy, but she just wants to lay down all the time. Will she ever be happy again and actually move around? I want to be the best mommy to her I can be. How can I get her to be happy?
admin answers:
It can take weeks, months or years for a dog to ‘be normal’ after abuse. I have a 10 year old Rough Collie who was abused. It took him 2 years to play and 3 years to bark. He wouldn’t even come inside the house on his own for 3 months. We always had to push him in, then he’d sit there and shake.
Now he is completely normal, but I’ve had him for 9 years.
Ken asks…
Can a dog without any papers be proven to be a purebred?
I am fostering a Rough Collie puppy at the moment. I think she is a purebred which made me wonder if a dog looks like a purebred and meets standers could it be registered? She is a rescue so her background is unknown.
Just out of interest do you think she could be a purebred?
http://shadowburn88.deviantart.com/art/Lassie-355446039
I would never try to register her. I think she is beautiful and I don’t need a piece of paper to tell me she is. I was just simply curious as of whether it could be done or not.
She could be a Sheltie. The shelter we are fostering her from told us she was a rough collie. I love her to bits either way 🙂
admin answers:
What any YA member THINKS makes no difference. It’s pointless to ask our opinion if she’s purebred.
Why do you feel a need to prove she’s purebred?
You can get DNA testing done on her.
You could actually register her, but only because there are some truly disreputable registeries out there that will register dogs that should NOT be registered. They register “designer dogs” (better known as mutts or mixed-breed dogs) so the owners can charge more money for puppies that are not true breeds.
But that’s pointless.
The serious reputable registeries like the AKC are not likely to register a dog based on DNA testing. Part of the registry process is tracking the parentage of all registered dogs. That’s not possible if you don’t know the dog’s parents. -!-
Charles asks…
Whats a good way to ask parents for a puppy?
I saw the cutest little collie rough mix online at a clevland rescue agnecie.
My mom said maybe one day but i really want one.
My dad is worried that our 8 year old cat our 4 year old cat and 8 month kitten would be thretened by it but the kitten stays in my room and the others are everywhere like basically in our bedrooms? So how can i ask? Or is it a good idea to get a dog?
admin answers:
As a person that has had in his charge ( I don’t say “owned”), at the minimum 8 dogs, 14 cats, many many hamsters, as well as 4 children, I can say without question that dogs and cats DO get along. A dog in the puppy stage will very quickly bond with any cat in the house. The older cats may or may not tolerate this behavior and THEY will let the puppy know the “ground rules”.
I don’t know your living area. Apartment, house with a yard, yadda yadda yadda, but I’d suggest, as a first step matching up a cross breed puppy to your living space. For instance you don’t want a saint bernard in an apartment.
Also I applaud your efforts to adopt from a rescue agency.

Your Questions About Dog’s Life 2

What to do when your dog experinces a loss?
We used to have 2 dog’s, an older and a youger one, recently the younger one (who was still a puppy) got hit by a truck, and died instantly, she was in good health her whole life. Carol asks…
Does anyone know how to prepare and cook dog food which has sufficient nutritions?
I read many articles saying about dog food can harm and shorten dogs’s lives, so I would like to try and prepare my own dog food for my dogs. Thanks all!!
admin answers:
It’s okay, since you don’t give your dog this following:
1. Coffee (grounds and beans). Coffee grounds or beans can cause “caffeine” toxicity in dogs.
2. Fatty Foods. Dogs love rich fatty foods. They often get these foods as treats, leftovers or from getting into the trash. Fatty foods can cause pancreatitis in any pet except miniature or toy poodles. Cocker spaniels and miniature schnauzers are particularly prone to pancreatitis. The dog may become very sick very quickly.
3. Dairy Products . Dairy products are not highly dangerous but can pose problems for two reasons. Dairy products have a high fat content, and like other fatty foods, they could cause pancreatitis. The second danger is that pets digest dairy products poorly.
4. Macadamia Nuts. Macadamia nuts, also called the Queensland or Australia nut, can be toxic … But we don’t know why. The reason may be a mystery, but the evidence is clear. As few as six to 40 macadamia nuts have been shown to cause severe toxic symptoms in dogs.
5. Moldy or Spoiled Food . Dogs love to get into the trash. A medical problem arises when the trash contains moldy or spoiled food. In addition to food poisoning, some pets can develop tremors related to the ingestion of certain molds.
6. Nutmeg. You may not realize this but high levels of nutmeg can be toxic – even fatal. The toxicity principle is not well understood, but signs of toxicity include tremors, seizures, nervous system abnormalities and death.
7. Onions or Garlic . Dogs and cats lack the enzyme necessary to properly digest onions. A dog or cat that eats onions may experience gas, vomiting, diarrhea or severe gastrointestinal distress. All forms of onion and garlic are problematic, including raw, dehydrated, cooked or powder.ed forms. If large amounts of onion or garlic are ingested, or if onions are a part of your dog’s daily diet, the red blood cells may become fragile and break apart.
8. Xylitol (sugar substitute). Xylitol is a sweetener made from sugar-alcohol.It is found in sugar-free human food products, such as chewing gum and candy.
9. Yeast Dough . When ingested, bread or yeast dough will “rise” in your dog’s stomach just as rises in bread. This creates two problems. The dough often expands to many times its original size while inside your dog’s stomach, causing your dog’s stomach to expand as well. As the dough rises and ferments, alcohol is produced which can cause “alcohol toxicity.”
How to make home-food for your dog:
http://www.ehow.com/how_12697_make-homemade-dog.html
Yes, it’s right, it’s more tyring to make your own food than to buy in the market, but you are right. Dogs need certain nutrients that sometimes are not present in commercial dog food.

Should I apply to Stanford? What are some things I can do by next year to improve my chances?
I am a junior, currently, so I have a great deal I can still improve.
What do you suggest for me to change to improve my chances from now?
Also, would it help me if I applied Early Action? Or would it be better for me to apply Regular? I’ve been told that Early Action is best for EXCEPTIONAL applicants only, and I cannot say by any means that I am exceptional in light of other applicants.
I am also planning on applying to UW Seattle (likely safety), UCLA and UC Berkeley. I am unsure about my other choices as of now.
Female, Asian, lives in Washington
Middle class income.
GPA: 3.79 UW Expected GPA 3.85~ UW by EA application time, probably 3.88 by RD.
(This dropped a huge amount after I bombed my finals due to some extenuating circumstances. My dog Mishka passed away on the day of my last four finals and thus I ended with 3 B’s and a C+. I know it’s not a good reason, and I’m not expecting any college or program to accept it as one. I haven’t talked about it on applications up to this point..and honestly, I don’t feel comfortable citing my dog’s death as an excuse for my irresponsibility.)
SAT: 2280, 1st sitting..could probably get it up to 2300+ but is it worth it?
ACT: 34
SAT II: Math 2 800, planning on possibly taking two more
Class rank: No class rank, top 20% <—this is also determined by unweighted GPA (we don't have valedictorians or anything at our school)
Senior Schedule:
Philharmonic Orchestra
AP French
AP US Government
AP Calculus AB (we don't have BC, unfortunately)
AP Chemistry
AP Physics B (no Physics C either)
AP English Lit
Taking 8 AP tests this year. Expecting mostly 4's and 5's due to extensive studying.
ECs: 500+ volunteer hours (do colleges even care about this?)
BioQuest Academy
UW Math Academy
Washington Aerospace Scholars
Volunteering at UW Medical Center and Seattle Children's Hospital
Varsity Swim (3 years), Swim Captain. Also did summer league and club swim for the duration of my high school career.
Varsity Tennis (2 years)
Orchestra (8 years), I play the violin.
-Also was in local symphony orchestra and honors orchestra for a few years
-I tutor middle school kids in violin as part of this program called East Hill String Lessons. I’ve done this for roughly 5-6 years.
Piano (4 years) on my own time. I also do some tutoring for this, but not as part of a program, just as volunteer work.

Generic school award (top 10% award)
Generic scholar athlete awards, some state and district level awards for swim
Rotary Youth of the Month
TEEN Cert Program..not sure if this counts.
Planning on trying for National AP Scholar. Might as well, since I’m taking 8 AP tests this year.
@Doc Martin, 10% is a better chance than most people.
Honestly, I’d take it.
admin answers:
Stanford is a reach for everyone due to the tremendous number of qualified applicants applying for a small number of spots, but you genuinely are a good candidate. Your ACT score is fantastic and above the median for admitted applicants, and your SAT is also very impressive. As you’re already aware, you need to pull up your GPA to have a stronger chance at admission, but it’s not necessary to load up on weighted AP classes since your unweighted GPA is the most relevant. From a strategical perspective I can understand why you would think taking six AP classes your senior year would boost your odds, but it could actually be to your detriment. You’d be taking some of the most demanding courses available at the high school level, and each one requires a significant amount of energy and time outside of class in order to succeed. I spent more time on AP Physics than I have on classes at Stanford, and I’m a straight-A student here. In order to make all A’s in those courses and be a leader in extracurricular activities you’d either need bionic powers or the willingness to neglect your health and be chronically sleep deprived.
Stanford actually doesn’t value AP classes as much as many high schoolers believe they do. They state this on their Academic Preparation guide. They’re also quite persnickety about accepting AP credit from the exams. You do need to take your core subjects (math, English, science, history, foreign language) at the most challenging level available at your school, but for electives you should opt for something that truly captivates your interest. Unless something went awry earlier in your high school year, you should have fulfilled most of your main requirements and have more liberty for electives. I’m not suggesting that you drop AP Chemistry for a gym class, but if there’s an elective that could truly teach you something useful and new, consider taking it instead of one of the APs. To give you an example, I dropped AP Environmental Science to do a year-long independent research project culminating in a 51 page thesis, and swapped AP Computer Science for a special architectural engineering class offered that year. Explore your options.
Your success in your extracurriculars demonstrate that you have artistic and athletic talent. You might want to consider submitting the Arts Supplement if you’re an accomplished violinist. Yes, your volunteer service does bode well for you, though it’s not a significant factor in the admissions decision. If you do decide to keep the course load you’ve outlined here next year, edit your extracurriculars to the ones that you are the most personally involved in. Being a leader in one or two areas is better than being a participant in a dozen.
Spend the upcoming summer productively. You do not need to attend an expensive program at a college campus or go on a Habitat for Humanity trip or anything else that is elaborate in order to make the time meaningful. You could get a job, intern, take classes at a community college, or volunteer. If you already have an idea about what you wish to major in, look for any opportunities over the summer that would give you a little experience in it. For example, if you were interested in medicine, you could see if there’s a teen volunteer program at a local hospital.
I would recommend applying RD so your entire fall semester will be complete when you submit your application since you’re aiming to bring up your GPA.
I hope this answer is coherent and not jabberwocky and potholed with typos. I’m writing this at 3:50 in the morning, after a party, and am half-asleep. I’m posting a link to a blog post with important information for applicants to Stanford that I compiled from the admissions site.
~ skylark : )
Edit – Someone is in the habit of reporting my answers when I include a link to my blog, so I’ll c&p this answer to Notepad. Message me and I’ll send it if this answer vanishes.
Edit 2 – DM, I haven’t had any answers reported since Y!A told you to leave me alone in October, but I still c&p’d this answer as a precaution. You petulantly thumbs down all answers, regardless of their quality, when your answer gets a thumbs down, so I never take offense. You tell everyone asking about applying to Stanford that they are mediocre or have no hope even when that’s inaccurate. I write out tailored answers with the intent to help. I’m kind, but honest. I did not give an unctuous answer, and I would have written the same response regardless of yours. I sign off on answers because it feels like a signature; there’s no other motive. Most people vote based on the answer, not the user anyway. As for high school behavior, let’s not have the pot call the kettle black. Besides, as you’ve pointed out when demeaning me, I’m just out of high school. You’re middle aged.

Sharon asks…
Breeds that fit my needs???
I have been shopping for a purebred dog for several months. I have done my own research and have a few candidate breeds, now I need some unbiased opinions ( not surprisingly it seems all breeders believe the dogs they have chosen to be the finest breed on earth). I live in Colorado in the city, I have a double lot, the yard is fenced but is not huge. My girlfriend and I both jog so exercise is not really an issue (but I don’t want my couch eaten if I skip a day). Here’s the tough criteria, I enjoy backpacking so my dog has to be able to put in 10 mile days over very rough country for 3-4 days at a time when it is grown. Any breeds that do not have a long history of genetic health problems will be considered. I appreciate your time and assistance.
I have already unfortunately eliminated a couple of these much appreciated suggestions: Pit Bulls are banned in my city and my neighbor already has an ill behaved Malamute. He howls incessantly at any loud noise… he’s beautiful but he hears sirens at least 30 seconds before I do and howls long after I can no longer hear them … so probably not a Malamute. I don’t want my dog to be picking up bad habits that annoy the whole neighborhood.
admin answers:
GSD, lab or golden. A GSD will be able to keep up with you and will LOVE IT but they require a lot of training as they are highly intelligent. A lab or golden are easier to train and very active dogs who love being outside. Another choice is a German Shorthair pointer, VERY active dogs with high energy and very smart. Also a border collie or an Australian shepherd would be a good dog. All of the dogs I listed are smart and would be good off leash in the back country. In terms of not chewing up your couch if you miss a day…good luck finding any dog with the activity level you are looking for. Just make sure you crate him as a puppy until he grows out of the chewing phase!

Your Questions About Rough Collie Puppies
Maria asks…
Should all of my puppies be spayed and neutered at the same time?
I have 4 rough collie puppies and they are almost old enough to be spayed and neutered. The vet office that I use has two vets, so they could do all four in one day. Should they all be done on the same day? I can handle them when they come home, it will be a little hard, but do-able. Is it better to have them done at the same time so there isn’t dominance problems?
admin answers:
There is no reason to wait months to have your dogs spayed and neutered. They can be done at 8-9 weeks not months. There is no reason what so ever to wait until they are a yer old much less six months.
The whole thing about waiting is based off unsupported myths
Laura asks…
Raising golden and rough collie puppies?
Anybody own a rough collie and golden retriever raised as puppies together? Does the collie become hyper/well socialized like the golden? Or does she remain sweet, shy?
I want my collie to grow up as what collies generallly are in temperament..Polite,calm and sweet natured 🙂
admin answers:
Goldens are supposed to be sweet, calm, and polite. Nearly all guide dogs are Goldens these days..and they are supposed to be easily trained and love to please.
However, it isn’t likely that your collie will be affected by your golden’s temperament, unless the golden is a bully.
Mandy asks…
How to socialise a new puppy to a 6yr old dog?
I have a 6 yr old female rough collie (aka lassie) who is a great gentle dog but can be snippy at times. She seems to be getting grumpy as she ages. 3 weeks ago we got a border collie male puppy who is now 9 weeks old. We introduced them and watched them closely and they were fine. But about 3 days later the female kept nipping the pup on the head, doing no damage but showing dominance and we just thought it was due to that. A few days ago they got into a bigger scruff where the neighbour across the road came and tore them apart (mind you, we dont talk to this neighbour). Again he was fine but just scared of going near the older dog.
However, today she grabbed him by the neck and ripped into him and 2 neighbours ran to pull her off him. He had to be taken to the vet and was given antibiotics and pain killers for the bite around his neck! My dad has built a fence separating the two dogs but this can’t be forever!
How do I socialise them without the pup being hurt again? And how can I stop this jealousy?
admin answers:
Its not jealousy.
Your female dog has a dodgy temperament. Snippy?
A stable natured adult dog does NOT fiercely attack a young puppy. It`s the law of the dog world.
I would think very seriously about keeping this puppy as instances like this can make him afraid or very nervous of other dogs as he matures. Also it is very possible if this older dog is “ripping into him” she could possibly one day even kill him. Jmo.
Add> A stable natured adult dog WILL chastise a young puppy and this normal as long as it`s mildly and not an attack that draws blood.

Your Questions About Dogs Life Span
David asks…
How long does is a dogs life span in human years?
My uncle brought a new dog yesterday and apparently it’s 2 months old (basically it would have been born beginning of May this year) How long is a dogs life expectancy in human years? So it is born in 2012, what year is it expected to life until?
For example, a humans life expectancy is 90 – 100, what age in human years is a dog expected to live up to?
admin answers:
There is a scale on Dogster – age related to size in terms of years, although not completely accurate, gives you an idea of how size relates to age. The old ideology of 7 human years for every 1 dog year doesn’t actually work. For instance, in my breed, puppies are considered pups until about 3 years of age, they mature at a much slower rate than smaller dogs and they are considered seniors at age 7, a time when smaller dogs are just entering their prime. In my breed, at age 4, they start to mature & age at a faster rate than a smaller breed.
Here is the scale and a good rule of thumb:

Sandra asks…
I have a seven year old boxer dog and i want to get a boxer puppy. Is this a good idea?
Both dogs are female, would this alter the older dogs life span?
admin answers:
Provided your boxer is well socialized and enjoys the company of other dogs, it would most likely give her a new lease on life. When my beardie was 10, I brought in my first 2 greyhounds and it definitely turned him into a puppy again! He was thriving on having 2 other dogs to play with and walk with and just run around the yard with.
Lisa asks…
What lists of dog foods are good& bad for your dog?
I have 2 cocker spaniels, Sweetie & Angel. Lately I’ve noticed that commercial dog food is bad for dogs & decreases their life span. I want to change their food out but I don’t know what to buy from stores target, walmart, petsmart, & petco. I’m worried if I take her to a vet that they will suggest a harmful brand. What should I give them? Thx!!!
Also should I give them dry dog food or canned food?
admin answers:
“As you can see, barely any dog food is good for dogs except Blue Buffalo food.”
You didn’t really expect them to say that XYZ dog food was better than theirs did you?
The reality is that there are very few “bad” dog foods on the market, federal laws take care of that.
The key is to find the feed that YOUR DOGS do well on, which may or may not be the same as MY DOGS do well on.

Your Questions About Collie Man

how do i convince my parents to let me shave my border collie?
how do i convince my parents to let me shave my border collie? I think he would look adorable. if your answer works i will choose you for best answer. please give me ideas.
Ong they do look ugly. i changed my mind . i dont want to do that to my dog. he would be soo embaressed lol
admin answers:
Some dogs are meant to be clipped/shaved and some are not. Border collies are not.
Dogs have fur for a reason, PROTECTION. Protection from the cold and hot. It acts as a air conditioner in the summer and a heater in the winter. Granted the air conditioner part doesn’t feel like our man made air conditioner, but their fur does keep them cooler than shaving it.
Susan asks…
Would you start either Terrell Owens, Austin Collie, or Calvin Johnson for week 2 in the nfl?
I would normally go with Johnson but he is coming off a bad week and now his quarterback is injured. Austin Collie is coming off a very good week but he is a #3 receiver on the colts and it might just be a fluke, and I don’t know how TO will perform with him sharing the ball with Ochocinco. Thoughts?
admin answers:
Calvin Johnson. Collie needs to show me a few more weeks being a favorite target of Manning before I buy into him – he is part of a 5-man receiving squad, so I look at week one as his lucky week. He’ll probably have 2-3 more, but you don’t want to guess when those will be. TO is in decline. Cinci made an effort to get him the ball week 1, but this week will be different, and the Raven D is tough. Megatron is still mega talented, and despite his QB issues (he has never had a tremendous QB), he can be counted on to produce most weeks. This one is a no-brainer to me.
Steven asks…
Should i start austin collie over santana moss this week?
Collie is up against NE 25th ranked pass defense and Moss is playing the titans 7th ranked pass d
but collie is coming off a concussion… or ill throw pierre garcon in the mix too.
admin answers:
I go with Cigar Guy do NOT put in Garcon i have held him and he’s done nothing for me!! :(( Collie if he plays was averaging at least one touchdown pass per game and in a duel of wits with Tom Brady u can be sure Peyton Manning will want that ball in trustworthy hands!!

Your Questions About Dog’s Life 2
Mark asks…
How do I stop my dog from barking at my neighbor who bangs the side of his shed to make her stop barking?
I have told him that banging on things won’t get her to stop, it will only get her to bark more. His response was, “Then get ’em to shut the ^$&# up.” I live on 1.5 acres, he lives on 2.5 acres. There is a buffer of 150 feet of solid trees between our yards, we can’t even see each other. He works outside quite a bit, and I know her “puppy bark” (7 months old) can be annoying, but I don’t see an end to the cycle. It is unrealistic of me to expect my neighbor to change, so what can I do to change my dog’s reaction to his behavior? One option I will not consider is keeping her in the house all the time. She needs her exercise and fresh air. I have .75 acres fenced off for the pups to run, which they enjoy. I have three other dogs, but they don’t bark very much, as they are familiar with all of the “neighborhood noises” and don’t respond to it. I have had my new pup 2 months. Any suggestions or ideas that have worked for you?
admin answers:
You are going to have to take this barker in hand an train it not to bark, especially at the neighbor.
First step is to kindly train your dog to be submissive. You can do this by daily walking you dog on leash for over 30 minutes. Keep the collar high up on the neck, so you have full control of its head. Learn to correct your dog quickly and sharply whenever it needs it. Don’t beg or nag. Lead dog never do. Otherwise walk in a very relaxed and business like manner. You are the boss. Don’t be nervous or the dog also gets nervous. Walk close to the neighbor’s place, so your dog gets used to the neighbor’s movements, noises, and smells. Remember to correct your dog as required. Soon, after a few weeks, your dog should be used to your neighbor. Hopefully your neighbor will help you by making noises and moving around near your property. Maybe your neighbor will come to like your dog when he sees how well behaved it has become.
As for your other dogs, each needs to be subservant to you. When you feed them, you still own their food and can take it away any time you choose. If you can’t, you are lacking as a leader. You are their boss and it should show. You can learn to walk them also, maybe 3 or 4 at a time. That should be fun. Walk in front of your dogs, not behind. Remember that you are the pack leader and therefore YOU must work to keep your status.
With my dog I require him to do something for me before I do something for him. Usually it is only for him to sit before getting a reward. For example he must sit until I go out the front door before he may also leave the house. We keep it short and simple and at the same time I have reestablished my leardership.
If you think you need more help, watch the TV show “The Dog Whisperer”. It is a great educational show and is entertaining also.
Good luck.
Charles asks…
How long does advantage dog flea control take to absorb into the skin?
I put it on my dog’s neck about 2 hours ago, and it is still wet. Can it harm her? She is a puppy
admin answers:
How it works
Use Advantage monthly to kill fleas within minutes. The active ingredient is imidacloprid, which acts on the nervous system of the flea to cause paralysis and subsequent death. Advantage stops biting fleas in three to five minutes and starts to kill adult fleas within an hour after application.1 Within 12 hours of application, 98-100 percent of fleas are dead. This is important because flea bites can lead to skin infections, cause discomfort for your pet, lead to allergic skin reactions, and can even transmit other disease-causing organisms, including tapeworms.
You won’t need to use another flea control product. Advantage kills fleas before they lay eggs, so their life cycle is broken at multiple stages. It also kills flea larvae within 20 minutes of contact.1
IT DOES NOT GET INTO THE BLOOD STREAM….AND IT CAN BE BOUGHT OUTSIDE OF THE VETERINARIANS OFFICE.
Dont let her lick it. It will dry she will be fine.

The past two times I have taken my dog to a dog park, he ends up sick for 2-4 days and not sure why?
My fully-vaccinated 11-month old Boston Terrier loves the dog park, but for the past 2 times I have taken him, he has severe diareha for 2-4 days following. It is awful and results in long nights. I want to exercise my condo-bound dog but not at the expense of making the dog’s and my life miserable!

There’s probably something in the air (or park grounds) that is making your dog sick. Try a different route and see if anything changes, then call me in the morning. The receptionist will gladly help you with today’s consultation.

Info on nova scotia duck tolling retrievers?
I’m new to owning an nova scotia, i honestly had no idea that there was such kind of breed. I picked up summer from the houston humane society, and i was positive she was full golden retriever but she never grew to be as big as an female golden so i was concerned and she had white on her chest, white on the tip of her tail and feet and adorable speckle under her chin, id never seen anything like it. Ive been reading bout novas on the internet but would like to.know more bout them, summer part golden and nova, whats the difference between a novas and goldens temperment?
admin answers:
I very much doubt she’s a Toller (nobody calls them Novas). As they are a rare breed that has thankfully not been noticed by backyard breeders, even adults are snapped up like gold dust and rarely find their way into rescues. She could be a Golden Retriever crossed with a Rough Collie, Border Collie or Brittany with those markings. If she is a real Toller (the wedge-shaped head is a real giveaway), she will have a far higher work drive than a Golden Retriever.

Jenny asks…
Will the refs let the Ravens beat the Colts next week?
All year long we’ve seen the Colts get loads of calls (or non-calls) go their way. Just to name a few:
1) @ Arizona. Bethea pulls down a Cardinals receiver in the endzone in plain sight and then intercepts the pass that was thrown to his man. No call.
2) vs. NE. Austin Collie is covered by Darius Butler on a deep route. There is zero contact of any kind and the pass is overthrown anyways. Pass interference Defense. 30+ yard penalty giving Indy 7 points.
3) vs. NE. On 4th & 2, Kevin Faulk bobbles then catches a pass gaining FULL possession with his left foot on the 30 yd line. The ball is spotted at the 29 which would’ve been physically impossible. Numerous sports casters disagreed with the call and said Faulk had the 1st.
4) @ Houston. Pierre Garcon(?) is running stride for stride with a Houston DB. Zero contact. The ball is WAY overthrown. Pass interference defense. 40 yard penalty. Indy gets 7 free points.
5) vs. Titans. On 4th down & goal the Titans go for it. VY throws a jump ball to the corner of the endzone. The Colt DB never turns and as he puts his arm in the air to knock it down he uppercuts the Titans WR knocking his head back and him down. No call.
6) @ Ravens. A Colt receiver is tackled in the backfield on a reverse for what should’ve been a 3rd and very long. Instead, phantom roughing call on Ngata? and 1st down Colts. Led to a FG I believe.
There were others but these were the worst of them.
@Krazy eyes
I respect that you admit the Colts get a lot of bad calls. Not all Colts fans can do that. However, you’re wrong. I’m a fan of the game first and foremost.
I cannot stand it when a team or player gets all the calls. It takes away from the integrity of the game.
@TIMMAY
I’ve only complained about the Colts as they are the only ones receiving horrific calls. In case you’ve been living under a rock. The Colts have only 1 SB this decade. So obviously your theory is garbage. Thanks for playing though.
admin answers:
Be prepared for the refs to spot the Colts 7 points as they have done so many times this season. I don’t think it will be impossible for the Ravens to win BUT if the Colts do somehow get to the SB, the NFL will absolutely do everything in its power to ensure that Manning gets another ring.
It’s the only way Manning can ever hope to reach Brady’s level and the NFL wants its golden boy (Manning) to surpass Brady so badly.

What band performed at King of the Mountian snowboarding on CBS?
there was a band who performed and I don’t know who it was. They lyrics were along the lines of ‘with a fire in his eyes Johnny would ride’ I NEED TO KNOW WHO SINGS THIS SONG!
admin answers:
Mark collie?
Johnny came home in ’67 to a little bit less than a heroe’s welcome
Guns of war ringing in his head I wonder what he must have thought
About the things some people said
Johnny was a rebel alright it was in his blood like fire in his eyes
Believin’ that freedom was well worth keeping alive
Johnny was a rebel alright he knew where to stand and where to fight
Believin’ that freedom was well worth keeping alive
Johnny was a rebel alright
He used to ride that Harley through the hollows and the hills
Blow through town standing on one wheel
Long hair flyin’ like a sheet in the wind I knew he never would fit in
In the old hometown again
Yeah Johnny was a rebel alright…
That night out on the courthouse yard behind the civil defense and the national guard
I saw an angry mob get out of hand I saw Johnny take a bullet for another man
[ guitar ]
Johnny died young like the good often do fightin’ for right in the struggle of truth
It seems like a waste when I look back today but I guess it’s like he used to say
Our freedom’s only worth as much as we’re all willing to pay
Johnny was a rebel alright Johnny was a rebel alright yes he was
Johnny was a rebel alright yes he was Johnny was a rebel alright yes he was

Your Questions About Dog’s Life Cycle
John asks…
How do I treat my dogs for roundworms?
Today I found out that my german short hair dogs have roundworms. So I started researching what they were and stuff. I read that once a dog is 6 months old, they develop a resistance to worms. And if a larvae was to complete the life cycle, it would come to rest in various body tissues and become encysted. While encysted they are protected from the dog’s antibodies and most types of dewormers. So how do I treat them most effectively for the worms?
admin answers:
I am not sure what you are reading, but it is not accurate – or at least what you are writing is not correct. That’s actually good news, because round worms are definitely treatable.
Take a stool sample to the vet and have them analyze it and they will prescribe the correct treatment depending on what type(s) of worms you are dealing with.
How did you discover that your dogs have round worms?
Most puppies develop roundworms – this is quite normal. The best place to get information about this is from your vet.
Robert asks…
Are these characteristics common with dogs in heat?
My Beagle just went into heat for the second time. I thought she had been acting a little different in the past few days before i noticed she was really in heat.
She seemed tired, or like she didn’t feel so good. Is that a dog’s PMSing?
Also, her fur coat has been super soft for the past week. Does that have anything to do with it?
And last of all, does going into heat hurt her? Just wondering if she gets cramps and mood swings like i do. How can i make her the most comfortable during this time?
admin answers:
These symptoms don’t seem to be related to her heat cycle, but she could have some other underlying condition that hasn’t been treated to cause her lethargy, which may seem worse now that she’s in heat. It is common though for a bitch in heat to display bouts of “moodiness” or irritability (easily startling or feeling “touchy”, becoming somewhat aggressive to other animals, wanting to keep to herself, etc) throughout her 3-4 week long heat (and yes, they will already be going into heat several days before they actually start bleeding).
I would try to allow her plenty of time alone in a quiet, cool, somewhat shady or dark room when she seems to “not feel so good” so that you don’t cause her any additional stress, but ultimately, you should have her seen by a vet to make sure she’s not ill in any way. And, while you’re there, schedule an appointment (or get a referral to a low-cost spay/neuter clinic) to get the poor girl fixed, so she doesn’t have to experience this again! Know that having her spayed will keep her healthier and increase the chance of her living out a long life, free of developing cancers.
Michael asks…
What is the one green thing you are doing thatwill make the most difference?
What do you feel is the simplest but most important green thing you can do in your everyday life? How will this make a difference?
admin answers:
There is no one quick solution to being Green.
At home, we use fluorescent bulbs in place of incandescents – and only use the lights we need.
Most of our trash is put in the recycle bin. All organic matter is buried in the back yard and mixed with my dog’s feces to aid composting – and to prevent the dog from digging the food up.
There are many green activities you can use, such as utilizing dry/composting toilets, taking public transportation or cycling, capturing rainwater for non-potable uses, etc…
By utilizing fewer resources (and returning or reusing the leftovers) we give the planet a chance to breathe. There are only a limited abount of resources on this planet, and once they’re depleted, that’s it.

My family and I are looking for a rough collie breeder. I’ve been looking at websites, but my parents seem to find a flaw in every breeder we look at lol. How do you tell if a breeder is good or bad? I know to make sure they health test/show/etc, but what are some other things?
Or, does anyone know any good breeders in California? Thanks.
We already have one adult dog that we got from the shelter. We want to purchase a puppy from a breeder this time.

Will a 16 months dog adapt to a new family?
I have never owned a dog before so I’ll be needing lots of advice on this topic. I’m thinking of adopting a 16 month old female Rough Collie. Her previous owner is a reputable Rough Collie breeder that wants a new family for her. Will it be really hard for her to adapt to a new family? I just called the breeder up and she told me I might have to give more attention to her for changing her family. Should I find a puppy instead or adopting is better for a first time dog owner?
admin answers:
Just giver her a lot of attention and exercise. Collie’s are a working breed and will feel lost and bored if they do not have some thing to do. The best way to bond is to simply play with her.
Betty asks…
if i buy a rough collie puppy from a breeder what vaccines will it need?
hey everyone
i have found nothing about this anywhere and my dad needs to know before i buy, will the breeder already have gave them there first jabs? will they tell me what to get them?
or do i go straight to a vet and ask them, can they tell what they already had jab wise?
how often does a rough collie need vacines, im guessing every 3 years?
much appreiated
admin answers:
Most breeders do vaccinate for measles as the antibodies are like those made from the distemper
shot. You will probably have to take your pup to the vet. And get Distemper, parvo etc. And don’t forget to ask about Heartworms so you can prevent your pup for getting them as the treatment is Arsnic poison. You will also have to repeat the shots in one month and then he will need a rabies shot at
six months.

Does Paul Collier’s plan offer a credible solution to the reduction of global poverty?
Does Collier’s plan offer a credible solution to the reduction of global poverty? Summarize his plan and explain your position
admin answers:
Summarize his position:
Is it a credible solution? In theory his arguments are compelling. In reality it fails in the implementation. As Collier mentions himself: “Unless we have an informed society, politicians will get away with gestures. Things that look good, but don’t work.” To understand what he means, just watch the current debate among politicians about economic policy in the US!
There are other problems with Collier’s plan, for example, the size and direction of international capital flows and their consequences on domestic economies. However, this goes way beyond this forum. A good place to start is to study the Asian Crisis of 1997.

How did Europeans listen to music before WW1, and what were some popular French and German songs from the era?
When did radio become widespread? Did people listen to phonographs? How did people hear recent songs for the first time? What was considered “popular” music?

HEINRICH SCHLUSNUS (1888-1952) was the premier German baritone in Germany for over 40 years, particularly noted for his singing of Verdi. He was also a fine singer of lieder. His records span the acoustic and well into the electric era, throughout the Third Reich and beyond. They are all of the highest calibre.
The celebrated Jewish baritone, JOSEPH SCHWARTZ (1880-1926) was born in Riga but apecialized in the German repertoire, though he also sang other roles such as Escamillo in CARMEN. His records are well sought after and for good reason. This was a great artist. MARGARETE MATZENAUER (née Temesvar 1881-1963). After an initial success in Europe, she sang at The Metropolitan for 20 years ERNESTINE SCHUMANN-HEINK (1861-1936) A very different singer was the German soprano ELISABETH SCHUMANN (1885-1952), here seen as MIGNON. Her unique lyric soprano was perfect for Richard Strauss operas, for instance, as well as for lieder. Jewish-German soprano LOTTE LEHMANN (1888-1976), deservedly sang alongside such greats as Tauber and Chaliapin during the 1920s, but the appearance of the Nazis forced her to move to the USA where she triumphed again for further decade. She was as fine an exponent of lieder and operetta as opera with a warm soprano sound that appealed to everyone. Http://www.spats.demon.co.uk/GreatGermanSingers.html
