Your Questions About Organic Dog Food

Lisa asks…

Why is Timberwolf Organics dog food named that when its not organic??

Its a good dog food, but it is not organic like its name says.

admin answers:

You’re right, it’s not. It’s a marketing tactic. It is good food, but not organic.

Donna asks…

Why is everyone swearing by these organic dog foods?

Family has had dogs since I was a little kid and we never bought expensive dog food and all our dogs lived long happy lives. Was also told by a vet that they are all basically the same some just make the dog expel less waste.

admin answers:

Dogs are basically scavengers and they do well on most sorts of food.
In the old days I used to feed my dogs just plain dog biscuit kibble and breast of lamb or offal from the village butchers shop. There was no fancy complete foods in those days. Allergies in dogs was almost unheard of and my dogs lived long and healthy lives.
The dog food industry is big Business and they are all eager to make us believe that their product is the best and that if we don`t feed our dogs with their wonderful vitamin filled food we are guilty of not providing our dogs with a correct diet.
There are some good basic complete dry foods on the market that just use simple wholesome ingredients whereas others have all sorts of fancy ingredients that are not really needed by dogs and can cause allergies and digestive problems.
I think if a dog is doing well on what it is being fed and enjoys its food then stick with it.

Linda asks…

what is the healthiest dog food?

My bulldog eats natures variety raw organic frozen dog food..its very expensive and we want to swtich to a dry food or dry and add some of the frozen…He gets really bad allergies thats why we stayed with the same brand for so long..any suggestions?

admin answers:

My Dog loves the Science Diet Food. Lamb and Rice.

Always true to you (darlin, in my fashion) from kiss me kate
Too darn hot – also from KMK

other songs-

Downtown Farmers Market Draws D.C. Crowd
First lady Michelle Obama was on hand to support the opening of a farmers market that closed Vermont Avenue between H and Eye Streets NW to traffic Thursday afternoon.

By Dana Milbank
Friday, September 18, 2009
Let’s say you’re preparing dinner and you realize with dismay that you don’t have any certified organic Tuscan kale. What to do?

Here’s how Michelle Obama handled this very predicament Thursday afternoon:

The Secret Service and the D.C. police brought in three dozen vehicles and shut down H Street, Vermont Avenue, two lanes of I Street and an entrance to the McPherson Square Metro station. They swept the area, in front of the Department of Veterans Affairs, with bomb-sniffing dogs and installed magnetometers in the middle of the street, put up barricades to keep pedestrians out, and took positions with binoculars atop trucks. Though the produce stand was only a block or so from the White House, the first lady hopped into her armored limousine and pulled into the market amid the wail of sirens.
Then, and only then, could Obama purchase her leafy greens. “Now it’s time to buy some food,” she told several hundred people who came to watch. “Let’s shop!”

Cowbells were rung. Somebody put a lei of marigolds around Obama’s neck. The first lady picked up a straw basket and headed for the “Farm at Sunnyside” tent, where she loaded up with organic Asian pears, cherry tomatoes, multicolored potatoes, free-range eggs and, yes, two bunches of Tuscan kale. She left the produce with an aide, who paid the cashier as Obama made her way back to the limousine.

There’s nothing like the simple pleasures of a farm stand to return us to our agrarian roots.

The first lady had encouraged Freshfarm Markets, the group that runs popular farmers markets in Dupont Circle and elsewhere, to set up near the White House, and she helped get the approvals to shut down Vermont Avenue during rush hour on Thursdays. But the result was quite the opposite of a quaint farmers market. Considering all the logistics, each tomato she purchased had a carbon footprint of several tons.

The promotion of organic and locally grown food, though an admirable cause, is a risky one for the Obamas, because there’s a fine line between promoting healthful eating and sounding like a snob. The president, when he was a candidate in 2007, got in trouble in Iowa when he asked a crowd, “Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately and see what they charge for arugula?” Iowans didn’t have a Whole Foods.

For that reason, it’s probably just as well that the first lady didn’t stop by the Endless Summer Harvest tent yesterday. The Virginia farm had a sign offering “tender baby arugula” — hydroponically grown, pesticide free — and $5 for four ounces, which is $20 a pound.

Obama, in her brief speech to the vendors and patrons, handled the affordability issue by pointing out that people who pay with food stamps would get double the coupon value at the market. Even then, though, it’s hard to imagine somebody using food stamps to buy what the market offered: $19 bison steak from Gunpowder Bison, organic dandelion greens for $12 per pound from Blueberry Hill Vegetables, the Piedmont Reserve cheese from Everson Dairy at $29 a pound. Rounding out the potential shopping cart: $4 for a piece of “walnut dacquoise” from the Praline Bakery, $9 for a jumbo crab cake at Chris’s Marketplace, $8 for a loaf of cranberry-walnut bread and $32 for a bolt of yarn.

The first lady said the market would particularly appeal to federal employees in nearby buildings to “pick up some good stuff for dinner.” Yet even they might think twice about spending $3 for a pint of potatoes when potatoes are on sale for 40 cents a pound at Giant. They could get nearly five dozen eggs at Giant for the $5 Obama spent for her dozen.

But whatever the socioeconomics, there can be no doubt that Obama brought some serious attention to her cause. Hundreds of people crowded the market entrance on I Street as police directed pedestrians to alternative subway entrances. Hundreds braved a light rain and gave a hearty cheer when Obama and her entourage took the stage. “I can’t imagine there’s been a day in the history of our country when people have been more excited about farmers markets,” Mayor Adrian Fenty, Obama’s warm-up act, told the crowd.

The first lady, in gray slacks and blue sweater, marveled that the people were “so pumped up” despite the rain. “I have never seen so many people so excited about fruits and vegetables!” she said. (Must be the tender baby arugula.)

She spoke of the global reach of her cause: “The first thing world leaders, prime ministers, kings, queens ask me about is the White House garden. And then they ask about Bo.”

She spoke of the fuel fed to the world’s most powerful man: “I’ve learned that when my family eats fresh food, healthy food, that it really aff

George asks…

How much does your family spend per week on groceries?

My family consists of myself, my fiance and our 8 month old daughter. She is breastfed but eats a lot of solids and some table foods. We spend $100/week on groceries and I am beginning to think this is just ridiculous and that perhaps I just don’t know how to shop. I know for a fact I don’t know to cook LOL And I know that would save me some money…

We also don’t cut coupons or shop at discount grocery stores. My fiance is a junk food junkie and has several pricey treats he seems unable to live without. (25 years old and he will eat an entire box of Gushers in no time…yeah, the gummy fruit candy with the gross stuff in the middle.) We also have pets and the week during the month when we need to re-up on their food, it ends up being $20-$30 more expensive.

So how many people are in your family (and what are their ages) and how much do you spend per week on groceries? Do you have any tricks to help me cut this back a little?
Oh yeah I forgot about the toilet paper and paper towels…that stuff is expensive too.

admin answers:

Well, I’ve been where you are! It used to be so rediculous because we would spend 2-300 dollars and be out of food within a week! I’m also not a good cook, but I’m learning! Here are my tips, take them for what their worth, but I’ve learned a lot these last 3 years! In my house it’s me, my hubby, my 3 1/2 year old, and my 9month old, a cat, a dog (half beagle, half cocker-spaniel, so medium sized) and a fish that never dies (seriously, we forget to feed it for like 3 weeks and it’s still here! Lol)

Right now, I spend roughly $200 2x a month, but that includes EVERYTHING, including medicines, cleaners, etc.

Now I don’t buy everything cheap, but I try to shop smarter. I plan ahead and make a list. It helps me to create menus for the next 2 weeks of meals (I sit down and ask what everyone wants for dinner and then i make a list of everything i need to buy to make those meals. Then I pick up basics for lunches (bread, lunchmeat, peanutbutter & jelly, mac-n-cheese, spagetti-o’s, etc.) Then I add in snacks- I ask my hubby for a few snack ideas. I try to keep this to a minimum so i don’t overbuy. Then, I add in cat & dog food, formula, diapers, cleaners, etc. It is best to keep a list in a place like the fridge so as you run out of something (like deodorant) you can write it down. This keeps me from having to go back for things i forgot we needed and spending more than i budgeted for.

Then, stick to your list. Buying items you don’t need or on the fly ALWAYS costs you more $$ than you intended. Also, coupons are a great way to save extra $$, but I totally get that not only are they annoying, you might also buy things you don’t actually need just because you have a coupon for it!

Another thing is, figure how much do you use something? If you don’t use paper towel very often, buy the cheap stuff. If you do, make sure you are getting the most on the roll for your $$. Don’t be swayed by gimicks of “softness” or “quilted”. Toilet paper was like this for me. I used to buy scott brand because it lasted forever, but it was much like wiping with paper towel in my hubby’s opinion. And it was expensive. So i switched to angel soft. Yes it was cheap, but I had to buy the big 24 pack every 2 weeks, it was crazy! After a while, it’s not so cheap anymore. So i finally found a balance and buy charmin basic now. 12 double rolls, and it lasts me a month or so.

Now, i don’t buy organic, and I don’t make my own baby food. I buy huggies diapers when i have a coupon, and pampers wipes. My dog eats kibbles and bits or dog chow (whichever is cheaper at the time) I buy the big bag of mixed chips snacks (the individual portion sizes) to control my hubby’s snacking- portion control is easier than watching him eat out of the big bags LOL. I buy pepsi and bottled water, and amish noodles (yum!). So no, we don’t eat “cheap” food, but i have learned to shop smarter over the years! I have gone to save-a-lot on occasion, but I have found here lately, sometimes their prices aren’t any better than walmart’s!

Ok, I know this is EXTREMELY long and i’m sorry! Haha I just know what it’s like to be in your shoes and get so frustrated with the grocery bill, and it seems you have nothing to show for it at the end of the week! And when hubby eats everything as if you’re magically always going to have more- it gets very frustrating! =) I have a lot more ideas and ways to cook at home very cheap and easy too! If you want, feel free to e-mail me sometime! Also, I’m on facebook 🙂 Good luck to you! I hope you can get a system worked out for ya!

(oh, and by the way, keep track for one month how much you eat out- I found out we used to spend like $80 a week on groceries, then around $300 a month eating out because it never seemed like we had food in the house. Or we had cheap food like mac-n-cheese or ramen noodles. Now we cut back our eating out to once a week if that, and put about $200 extra into our grocery bill. It saves us $ in the long run, and even though i don’t always cook “healthy” at home, it is generally healthier for us in the long run, and my daughter isn’t living off of chicken nuggets and french fries anymore!)

Susan asks…

do dogs like or dislike the sound of the dog training clicker?

i bought a dog training clicker for my grandma, thinking that is might resolve the problem of her two yorkies fighting…. do you think it will work?

admin answers:

It depends on how you train the dog. Some people use the sound as a reward when the dog is behaving or does a trick right. Others, like me, use it as a naughty sound. When the dog does something bad, scold him/her and click the clicker loudly 3 or 4 times. Works both ways very well.

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Recipes

Charles asks…

What should i feed my dog since i want to stop using commercial food?

I have a bichon and she is older I want to stop using her commercial food because i no longer trust it event tho they say its safe does anyone know of good diets and recipes for dogs I want to keep her healthy and full of the nutrients she needs thnks….

admin answers:

Making your own food is VERY time consuming and you should take her to the vet more often to make sure she is getting all the nutrients. I tryed this and my vet just told me to stop because there was always something wrong and my dog wasnt getting what he really needed.

So I looked on Y!A and found out about some REALLY good dog food. Theres IS good dog food outthere with NO wheat gluten (which is why there was a recall) no fillers, by products or corn.

Blue Buffalo:
http://www.bluebuff.com/

Canidae:
http://www.canidae.com/

Innova/California Natural, Karma:
http://www.naturapet.com/

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul:
http://www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com/

and if you REALLY want to go organic:
TimberWolf Organics:
http://timberwolforganics.com/
(You can put chicken and cooked meat in there with the food)

Just look through some of those and see which one you can find near you and which is good on your wallet. Making your own dog is can be expensive and you can really be putting your dogs health at risk. These foods have NO WHEAT so they will never be on the recall as they are with their own company.

Hope this helps

Lizzie asks…

Can my Bichon Frise be alergic to his own fur?

I changed the food for organic with no lamb and no grains, stopped giving him treats, but as soon his fur gets a little longer he starts scratching and loosing fur around the house, I don’t know what do do anymore, what else can I try?

Thank you!

admin answers:

Try a no beef, wheat, and corn food ( Nature recipe, Blue buffalo ) ..

No he wouldn’t be allergic to his own fur, but could very well have a skin condition (that could worsen when the hair becomes longer and unkept).

Avoid bathing more then once a month, usually bathing only worsens dry skin on dogs… Person above is a tool! =D

and how can i prepare the food? can i add salt and pepper to it? or i just saute the meat without any condiments?
thanks!
pls give me recipes… i would really appreciate that..
thanks

admin answers:

I feed my dogs a homemade food which includes a mixture of all raw meats and offal (except pork), green leafy vegetables, carrots, broccoli, apples (all liquidised), sunflower and pumpkin seeds (crushed), organic sunflower oil, honey, a little garlic, boiled white rice.

Onions should be avoided as should exotic vegetables (bell peppers, egg plant etc). As a rule of thumb I avoid any vegetables that wouldn’t normally be found in the stomach of prey animals and limit offal to 10% of the whole mix.

If you want the recipe then just say so and I’ll happily post it on here for you 🙂

Here you go – All of the food is raw – no need to cook any of it and definitely NO salt, pepper or other condiments 🙂

1 kg raw beef mince
1 kg raw beef
1 kg raw mutton/lamb
1.5 kg raw chicken/turkey (white or dark meat it doesn’t matter)
1.5 kg raw tripe
1 kg mixed raw offal – liver, kidney, heart

Ethnic butchers are the best source of meat as they stock a much wider range at cheaper prices, will often deliver and best of all will chop most of the meat to your specifications, which saves loads of time.

The meat should be chopped into pieces roughly the size of the top of your thumb.

2 kg of mixed leafy/green vegetables (spinach, spring greens, broccoli, green beans, turnip greens)
1.5 kg carrotts
1 kg apples
2 large (supermarket sized) bunches of fresh parsley
1.5 kg of frozen peas, lightly cooked
300g sunflower seeds
100g pumpkin seeds
100g sesame seeds

Pulverise all of the above in a food processor so that it resembles a slightly textured cold soup.

Mix all of the above ingredients together (I use a large rubber tub trug, but washing up bowls or buckets will do just as well and then add:

1 kg white rice – cooked (ie 1kg is the raw weight)
1 medium jar of organic honey
1 tube of garlic puree
1 tube of tomato puree
2 tablespoons of brewers yeast
1 – 2 cups of sunflower oil

Mix together well and weigh out daily portions into freezer bags and freeze 🙂

I allow 25-30g of food per kilogram of body weight (or expected adult weight in the case of puppies). Feed this amount for the first 2-3 weeks and then adjust up or down according to weight gain or loss until you reach the optimum portion for your dog’s metabolism.

The dogs love it and are fantastically healthy (it has been approved by my vet).

Your Questions About Dog Training Classes Denver

Sharon asks…

GlacierWolf Question about Life, Alaska, Shooting, Hunting, Flying, and being the best human ever?

I am a long time resident of Alaska that actually knows what I am talking about.
GlacierWolf my question for you is as follows. You have done more in your life then any one man can physically do or even imagine. I understand that you have served in all branches of the military. You have lived in every city in Alaska and then many more outside of Alaska. You are an amateur gunsmith that likes to brag about his accomplishments on Yahoo Answers. You even surprise me sometimes with new ones like how you are an audio and video engineer. If I am not mistaken you are an “Olympic class shooter” that never went to the Olympics making you not an “Olympic class shooter.” I wish it was possible to put 3 bullets in the same hole at 300 yards maybe an Olympian could do it. In your superhuman insight you reveal answers to questions that even puts the Alaska fish and game to shame. If I understand correctly Alaska has 26.1 million Caribou while fish and game puts the number closer to 900,000 I am just not sure who is correct. I know you are a world traveler but can you tell me where Alaska and Russia touch? The 5 times I have crossed the Canadian boarder 2 of which were with my dog that was not tattooed, and neither one of us had 200 dollars of cash on us. Come to think of it I also brought my 30-30 rifle with little to no trouble. The many times I traveled by air to and from Alaska I didn’t stop in Seattle. There is a flight everyday from Portland to Anchorage by AlaskaAir. During the summer there are flights from Denver, Chicago, LA, Hawaii, and many others that are direct to Anchorage. When you and your new wife open up your latest restaurant in Fairbanks maybe I will fly there on one of the many flights to enjoy. In closing I would like to get to my question. Do you enjoy telling lies or do you just don’t know the truth?
I hope this helps

“There are approximately 900,000 wild caribou in Alaska” – Alaska Department of Fish and Game

“There are 26.1 million caribou in alaska’s largest herd” – Glacierwolf

Somebody is lying. Who is it?

Good luck. I am a professional photographer – so – lenses are my ‘thing’. If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

My wife and I have both worked in restaurants at one time in our lives. If you have any specific questions – feel free to email us.

People, like me, who build these things – always have a national match or service match rifle handy to compair our work to. I owned about 12 AR’s and spent 18 years shooting military competition before I built my first one from scratch.

I live in Alaska.

The problem is quite obvious why we hate Canadians. 95% of Alaska has to pass through Canada to get to Juneau, the capital of Alaska. We are not allowed to bring any form of food – meat, fish, etc – through the border. This means if I go to Juneau to fish and I catch a couple of nice 80lb halibut – I cannot bring it home. It also means when people from Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, Skagway etc etc come to the rest of Alaska they cannot hunt – because Canada will not allow them to bring the game meat home.

In Alaska we all carry guns for brown bear protection – heaven help you if you show up at the Canadian border with a firearm!! Even if it is Canadian legal. They will make you sit for hours before they decide to let you through the border – just to punish you for being Alaskan and owning a firearm. This means you can miss your ferry connection at Hanes.

Canadian’s are feely allowed to enter Alaska. But, when an Alaskan goes to pass through Canada to drive to Seattle or the state capitol – we are required to have to have $200 cash in hand for each and every person in the car. Credit cards and check books do not count – they want to see $$ in American dollars. This means a family of 4 must have $800 cash in hand – and as you drive though Canada every crook and theif that recognizes you are Alaksan by your car’s license plates knows they might be able to hold you up – and take your cash.

Oh, and if anyone in your car has had a DUI at any time in their life – the Canadian border guards make them turn around! Even if it was 40 years ago.

Not so much as the Canadian people we hate – we just hate the attitude of the Canadian border guards who hassel us.

You cannot fly direct to Alaska without first stopping in Seattle.
Your friend is not going to have a good time crossing the border – he will need to drive through Canada to get to Alaska. Canada law requires a health certificate for each animal – not a big deal when you arrive with one cat and one certificate…….. but a real problem for a breeder who is traveling with allot of animals. Each animal will need to have a tatoo that identifies the animal and matches up with the health certificate.

Today it will put 4 rounds inside the exact same hole at 200 yards with the TLG Suppressor installed. The groups open up a tad with the suppressor off.

Glacierwolf says: I am a long time Olympic Class military competition shooter. I am a regular at my states yearly pistol championships.

First – 9mm is not allowed in competition. I got no clue what kinda competiton you are doing that uses a 9mm. Duh? For military, state, regional, and national shooting matches and competition the requirement is a 1911 45acp in ‘ as issued’ condition. Although the rules will allow a Baretta 92F in “as issued” condition nobody in their right mind will use one – since even the US Army shooting team has not figured out a way to make a competition 92F model that can equal, let alone beat – the 1911.

Second – Glocks, Sigs, Springfield XD’s – these are all service carry and duty carry pistols. None of them are suitable for competition.

Third – if you want a gun that is cheap to shoot and can be used in competition – you should be looking at a 22 long rifle pistol and probably a gun like the S&W Model 22a. This is a perfect enty level pistol for competiton and will not break the bank – it is quite affordable.

Nobody should begin pistol shooting with anything except a 22lr. For $400 you can get a nice model 22a and 2,000 rounds of 22 ammo. Enough to become a really good shot. You go buy a 9mm and start learning to shoot on it – two years from now you will still be a lousy shot and only have $400 in spent brass + a 9mm pistol to show for your troubles…….. So – the choice – do you want to have a bag of spent cases come 2012 or would you like to have a nice 22 pistol, nice 9mm pistol, and be a good shot for the same money?

Hope this helps

He also says:
I am a former Olympic Class military long distance competiton shooter.

That does not make me a sniper. I have trained with sniper, fired matches against snipers and won – but – that still don’t make me a sniper.

‘Sinper’ is the term for a highly trained military shooter skilled at infiltrating any terrain (jungle, rural, urban, city) and hitting a designated target.

In the hands of such a person – a BB gun becomes a sniper rifle.

Think of it this way. Just because you own a house with a full kitchen stove, blender, toaster, microwave oven, and tons of pots and pans – it does not make you a chef.

In the hands of a skilled chef – an egg on a camp fire is gonna taste out of this world!

Who is to say what is a sniper rifle and what is a non-sniper rifle? Or, the difference between an expensive match rifle and a sniper rifle? What most people call ‘sniper’ rifles is actually a match rifle – but – just because you own it, does not make it a sniper rifle unless you have the skills and training.

Hope this helps.

What’s the chance of me getting a job after trade school?

I’m going to college this fall and I need a job so I can be able to pay my loans after I graduate and have experience. For those who say “people rent all the time” I know that’s why I’m looking for a job and getting training while I’m still eighteen and by the time I graduate college I have a job experience, a job, and by that time I have completed my trade school.

I paid $1,400 to attend a Nursing Aide class for my certification so I can work at a private homes, nursing home, and hospital.

When it comes to finding ways to earn money, consider a Denver (Colorado, USA), a woman that lost her upper management job. She started a simple business picking up dog droppings that led to earnings of over $75,000 a year, working outside, setting her own hours, and could be done using a bicycle as transportation. It is also something a child age 10 and up can do alone, an adult can do, or a whole family can do together. This article describes how.

Ken asks…

What is the lowest amount of ash that you should feed your cat with wet food?

I have been by friends not to give my cat too much (percentage on label) ash based foods. Can someone tell me what brand of wet food has the lowest? He loves this as a treat.

admin answers:

It’s more important to choose a wet food filled with healthy ingredients overall than to worry about ash levels.

Vets used to be concerned with the ash levels in cat foods for cats with FLUTD, but they have learned recently that ash and magnesium levels don’t play a huge role in the developement and treatment of UTI’s.

As far as what you should be feeding…Let me share with you what I have learned about feline nutrition to help you make an informed decision on what diet you should feed your cats.

Many brands of manufactured cat foods claiming to be “healthy” really are not. In fact they are made of the lowest ingredients possible. I’m not saying that a cat can’t live off them… Just the same as you could live off hot dogs and Mac and cheese forever, but better choices can and should be made for your feline friends. I would not venture to say that any manufactured food is “best” for a cat but a grain free organic wet food would be a good start. Feeding canned is certainly better than feeding dry in all cases.

Cats were never meant to eat dry food, also known as cereals or kibble. We, humans, make them eat it for convenience to us. It has nothing to do with them or their nutritional needs. It’s completely species inappropriate.

In the wild, cats derive their entire liquid intake from their prey. They do not have a thirst mechanism because they don’t need it when eating a species appropriate diet. They get all they need from what they eat. So they do not drink water. Regular ol’ house cats have descended from those same wild cats.

So in a home environment, your kitty does not get the moisture it need from dry food and are almost always in a constant state of dehydration. Water fountains are encouraged to TRY to get your cat to drink more and your kitty may even enjoy it. But it will never meet its water intake needs drinking from a bowl.

Deadly feline illnesses such as diabetes, kidney failure, obesity, stones, urinary tract blockages and Urinary Tract Infections (FLUTD), with and without deadly crystals run rampant these days. Cats are not taking in enough water to stave them off. Proper water intake through a species appropriate diet alone can prevent most of these conditions.

Overall, wet is a better all around better for any cats diet, be it canned or Raw and they should never be fed dry cereal kibble if we wish to most closely match their wild nutritional and dietary needs.

Kibble meets our needs… not our cats.

It is also bogus that kibble cleans teeth. DRY FOOD DOES NOT CLEAN TEETH. It’s an old myth that has been scientifically disproved for years, but old-school vets drilled it into people’s heads for so long (and sadly still do) that people still believe it. Cats can not “chew”. They do not have chewing teeth. They have meat ripping pointy carnivorous teeth. They do not have molars. They may “crunch” a piece of food once to crack and break it… but they are absolutely unable to chew a hard piece if food. Want your cat to have clean teeth? Give them an appropriately sized raw bone. :o)

I personally feed a Raw Meat and Bones based diet to my cats and they are very healthy on it. I HIGHLY recommend it. Once I got the hang of it and felt comfortable with it it’s a snap to prepare. It’s something you might want to consider someday. They are obligate carnivores after all and must derive ALL their nutrients from meat based sources. They are unable to absorb them from any other source. Despite thousands of years of domestication they remain strictly carnivorous. True and honest meat eaters and that is what they need most. Protein from meat!

If you are interested in feeding a raw diet some great places to start learning are http: catinfo dot org http://www.catnutrition.org/ , and http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/ .

If you would like to try raw with your cats and don’t want to get all technical about it but want to try a trusted, time tested and balanced raw diet you can order from felinespride dot com/products/catfood.aspx . I purchased this myself hen I first started and my cats loved it!

If raw is not an option for you please be aware that there are three Categories of Pet Foods:

-“Grocery store” foods – (Generic Brands and cheap name brands) Those foods found in grocery stores and mass-market retailers are made with lower-quality, less-digestible, inexpensive ingredients and are therefore a cheaper alternative. While easy on the pocketbook, “grocery store” foods normally do not provide your cat with the healthiest, most nutrient-dense ingredients.

-Premium foods – (Iams/Eukanuba, Purina One, Hills Science Diet, Nutro and such) Foods often found in grocery stores, pet stores, and veterinarian offices that contain higher-grade ingredients, but still include many elements of “grocery store” food, such as artificial colors, artificial flavors, chemical preservatives, and “filler” ingredients such as corn and wheat products, by-products and even animal digest. Yuck! Premium foods are usually more expensive than “grocery store” foods because their ingredients are sometimes of a higher quality, and are therefore somewhat more beneficial and digestible. But don’t be fooled, some of those same so called Premium brands are sometimes worse than grocery store foods, but they charge prices like they are better. They aren’t!

-Healthy foods – (Wellness, Merrick, Eagle Pack, Drs Foster & Smith) The newest addition to the pet food market – provide pets with the highest quality, healthiest, and most nutritious ingredients. They are typically available for purchase online or direct from the manufacturer. Some better retailers are starting to carry them now. Complete Petmart carries a few healthy brand foods. Foods in the Healthy class contain nutrient-rich ingredients. Formulated to provide optimum health benefits for pets, these foods often use real meat as the primary protein source, carbohydrate-rich whole grains like brown rice and barley and whole, fresh fruits and vegetables. They should not contain artificial preservatives, flavors, or colors. They will almost always be fortified with additional vitamins and minerals, and will use the best natural sources for fatty acids to help build healthy skin and a beautiful coat. Because healthy foods use high quality ingredients, you should expect to pay a little more than you would for other types of pet food. Remember, though, with healthy foods you can feed less since healthy foods are more nutrient-dense than other types of food so it often evens out or cost’s les than feeding foods filled with cheap non-nutritional by-products fillers.

With all that information in mind, when you are choosing a new cat food, study the ingredients. All ingredients on pet food labels are listed by weight. Meaning whatever ingredients are listed first on the list, there is more in there. The first ingredients listed should be whole meat ingredients, protein sources, such as Chicken or Turkey. NOT just the word “meat”! Who the heck knows what that is? The word Chicken Meal is ok, but it should be a secondary ingredient, not first. Meal is the meat dehydrated and ground into a powder.

The ingredients also should NOT include any by-products or animal digest whatsoever. Those are disgusting left over animal parts that are scraped off the filthy floors of meat and poultry plants. They should just go into the trash but they put them into pet food instead. EW!!!!

Also make sure there are no artificial colors or flavors. And make sure there is no BHA and BHT used preservatives. These preservatives have been shown to cause cancer in both cats and dogs. Bad Bad stuff and it’s in almost every cat treat on the market. 🙁

So, in summery of the ingredients… if you see the words by-products, Animal Digest, the word “meat” alone, Corn, Corn Gluten, Wheat Gluten, or BHA or BHT… stop reading, put down that product and move on to the next.

Be aware that when switching to a Healthy, Holistic or Organic food, you will pay for what you get. Good foods are not cheap. They are pricey and will cost you on a per bag basis much more. Just like steak costs more than hotdogs. But again, you will be feeding a better food and improving the over all health of your pet. This in turn leads to less vet visits for illness now and more importantly later in life in their geriatric years. You will also feed less of this food on a per animal basis because a smaller amount of food contains what your cat needs. Overall healthy foods are well worth it, if only for the piece of mind that the ingredients are better for your cat than cheap crap.

You can start your research for a healthy cat food here if you are not ready to try feeding a Raw diet:
onlynaturalpet dot com

If you want to buy in a store, Complete Petmart is a good store and carries quite a few natural, organic, and holistic blends. Also check with your local feed/grain stores.

I highly recommend you take the time to research for yourself, but the information I have given should get you off to a good start. Good luck choosing a new healthy food!

********IMPORTANT*******Don’t forget to switch your Pets food slowly over a period of 10 to 14 days, if you can. Mixing 25% new to 75% old. Then 50/50… then 75% new to 25% old. And finally switch over to 100% new. Take it slow as not to upset their digestive system.

Side note… Please don’t feed Iams / Eukanuba. It’s ALL fillers, byproducts, animal digest and CRAP. Read the ingredients! There is nothing good for your cat in that food. Not to mention they conduct the most appalling animal testing you have ever seen. .iamscruelty dot to see the terror they create.

What kind of cat food should i feed my cat?

He poops alot and i dont even give him that much food. I had a cat before and she ate the same about as he does but he just seems to poop alot and i have to clean his litter 3-5 time a day. Does it have to do with the food i give him?

The food that he eats is Friskies® Feline Favorites®
Oh yeah its dry. If its not the food then what is it? Is it even normal?

Your Questions About Dog Training Boulder

Daniel asks…

Has a dog ever saved your life?

I like hearing stories about dogs saving peoples lives. I mean, you never know if you would or wouldnt have died for sure but has a dog ever got you out of danger?

When I was about 8 years old, I lived in Alaska me and the neighborhood kids found a huge black and tan hound looking dog with floppy ears. He had a rope tied around his neck and was dragging it. We took it off(haha) and were playing with him and fed him. He stuck at my house all night by the basement window looking in while my family watched a movie. The next dy There was a moose and of course I decided to show of and run at it. Usually they arent aggresive and will run away but this one came walking at me, hair standing up and “Buddy” chased him off in the woods biting at his heels. We sat down and about 5 minutes later he came back. The next day someone called animal control on him though.

My Lab also saved me from 3 coyotes in Colorado that were all running at me. She chased them away but i didnt want her to get hurt and they kept coming back. so id let her chase them a bit then call her back, then when the coyotes came close again shed chase them, then id call her back untill i got into town. It was stressful! Haha they were more after her than me i think,

Can you please share some of your stories with me? THanks!
Bieber Fever: hah my Lab always scares off the cute guys my age who are single. Im not even joking. OR the old ladies on bikes. Shes not a fan of them either. Thats gonna do me alot of good in life.

admin answers:

Over the years my life has been saved several times by my dogs.

Once in the late 80’s I had a seizure while sitting on the edge of a bridge overlooking the Colorado river while it was in spring flood. I fell in unconscious. The chesapeake bay retriever I had at the time leaped in after me and dragged me out. She was a trained service dog for mobility and hearing. Never had been trained for any kind of water rescue..

Another time that summer the same dog rescued my little sister who was about 4 . She had decided to sneak onto a little raft and ended up floating downriver. I was fishing downriver a quite ways and saw her upstream floating down, So sent the dog for her as I threw down my fishing gear. My sister thought it was a great game so had not panicked and she trusted the dog . So the dog got her out by grabbing the little raft by the end carefully and fetching her in . My mother was running downstream across the boulders screaming thinking she had just LOST her child. Guess she thought the dog was going to puncture the raft .
She was blown away when she saw the dog save my little sister.
My sister wanted to play that game again.. My mother promptly dragged the little urchin home.

Another of my chessie service dogs around 2000 saved me from getting killed in a crosswalk by some idiot racing through a red light. She pushed me back out of the way but the bumper just clipped her jaw. She broke a few teeth and her jaw was cracked. She did not even let me know she got hurt until I got across the street and back to my truck. .

But there are so many stories of what these working dogs have done over the years to save my life or limb it would take a while to write it all.

John asks…

What’s wrong with my dog?

ok so here’s the deal. my dog is a pitbull, she had puppies on the 17th of september. We moved from eastern south dakota to boulder colorado on the 28th of september. Since getting here she has been peeing all the time and pooping at least once every time i take her out. We switched her food around the 3rd of october and it made her way sick so we had to switch her to something else… since then she’s been usually ok. the other night though she started throwing up in her kennel again and she had pooped in it too. after that she was ok again… and then today I went to denver for a few hours, i took her out before i left and when i had gotten home she had completely ripped the kennel door off…. it’s a wire kennel, one of those really nice ones. and she had ripped up all of the plastic from under her kennel and kicked all her blankets to one end of it. on top of that she pooped inside the kennel and again on a blanket i had bunched up in the corner of my room. she’s always had bad separation anxiety but she’s also always been a very well house trained dog… i don’t understand why she’s doing all of this all the sudden? and i’m sure it’s not because of the puppies, she’s perfectly fine being without them for many hours at a time.

admin answers:

HELLO are you there???????? You tell us that she just had puppies. Then you moved with her, you changed her food, are taking the pups away for hours at a time…. She is stressed out and afraid. If your dog feels insecure she can act out. This dog needs structure, and to stay with her pups for awhile to assure her everything is okay. She may think the pups are at the old home, and is trying to get out to go find them. Dogs don’t have an idea of how far away the old place is, they just know they want to go where they felt safe. If she did just whelp, then her hormones are also in flux, and she is just out of her mind with worry and stress. It is a bad idea to change EVERYTHING in a dogs life at one time….. I think you will have to work very hard to show her she is safe, her pups are safe, and get back to a routine with her as soon as possible. Dogs thrive on routine, LIke, the same eating time, same walking time, same place to sleep , etc. It may be a long road, for her to feel relaxed again. If she is vomiting you should go to the vet and have her checked out right away, there are many things associated with having puppies, that can cause a dog to get ill or die.

William asks…

can you remember the first time you went on a train? where did you go?

admin answers:

Yes when I travelled by steam train from London to Carlisle when I was a wee Lassie.

The coaches of the train had separate compartments and each had 6 seats either side. All the seats had little white covers on the headrest and there were blinds to pull down when it was dark outside.

The outside of each compartment had a corridor running the length of the each coach. This was good as you could go down the whole length of the train by running along these corridors apart from the 1st class coaches, which in those days were always situated at the front of the train.

If the guard stopped you running along these corridors you would say you were going to find a toilet. When the train was full up people used to stand in the corridors or sit on their leather suitcases reading books or reading their newspapers.

Steam trains made a different noise from that of the electric and deisel trains of today. They used to rock from side to side and the whilstle used blow when the train went under a tunnel it was all so very exciting.

There is a poem recalling a train journey which might sound naff but it just brought the whole experience of travelling on s steam train to life. I can’t remember the name of this poem but nodoubt someone will remember.

Nostalgia you can’t beat it.

This the poem I was talking about, It has to spoke with the rythm
that a train makes when moving across points and tracks:

Night Mail

This is the Night Mail crossing the border,
Bringing the cheque and the postal order,
Letters for the rich, letters for the poor,
The shop at the corner and the girl next door.
Pulling up Beattock, a steady climb:
The gradient’s against her, but she’s on time.
Past cotton-grass and moorland boulder
Shovelling white steam over her shoulder,
Snorting noisily as she passes
Silent miles of wind-bent grasses.

Birds turn their heads as she approaches,
Stare from the bushes at her blank-faced coaches.
Sheep-dogs cannot turn her course;
They slumber on with paws across.
In the farm she passes no one wakes,
But a jug in the bedroom gently shakes.

Dawn freshens, the climb is done.
Down towards Glasgow she descends
Towards the steam tugs yelping down the glade of cranes,
Towards the fields of apparatus, the furnaces
Set on the dark plain like gigantic chessmen.
All Scotland waits for her:
In the dark glens, beside the pale-green sea lochs
Men long for news.

Letters of thanks, letters from banks,
Letters of joy from the girl and the boy,
Receipted bills and invitations
To inspect new stock or visit relations,
And applications for situations
And timid lovers’ declarations
And gossip, gossip from all the nations,
News circumstantial, news financial,
Letters with holiday snaps to enlarge in,
Letters with faces scrawled in the margin,
Letters from uncles, cousins, and aunts,
Letters to Scotland from the South of France,
Letters of condolence to Highlands and Lowlands
Notes from overseas to Hebrides
Written on paper of every hue,
The pink, the violet, the white and the blue,
The chatty, the catty, the boring, adoring,
The cold and official and the heart’s outpouring,
Clever, stupid, short and long,
The typed and the printed and the spelt all wrong.

Thousands are still asleep
Dreaming of terrifying monsters,
Or of friendly tea beside the band at Cranston’s or Crawford’s:
Asleep in working Glasgow, asleep in well-set Edinburgh,
Asleep in granite Aberdeen,
They continue their dreams,
And shall wake soon and long for letters,
And none will hear the postman’s knock
Without a quickening of the heart,
For who can bear to feel himself forgotten?

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Petsmart

George asks…

What type of food should I feed my dog and cats?

What type of food should I feed my dogs and cats? I was looking at organic food online and was trying to find one that was right and could feed multiples. (4 dogs, 8 cats). Links would be nice, along with what do you feed your dogs and cats? How much? I have 2 German Shepherds and I want to get them off puppy chow as soon as possible and onto a higher, without byproducts, corn, ect diet. As for the cats I tried Nutro from Petsmart but after the latest recall I don’t eve trust that. No more store bought foods for me, infact my husband and I are even going organic…should I treat the animals the same? Any info would be nice! Thanks!
I don’t want any store bought food. From the cheapest (Purina, Meow Mix, Friskies, beneful) to the more expensive (Nutro, Science Diet, Iams). It’s all the same, I’m not feeding my animals chicken feathers, beaks, and carcass’s.

admin answers:

I use Nature’s Variety. They are an all life stages and their brands are interchangeable so that you can switch them without giving your animals an upset tummy. They offer both cat and dog food.

There is also Timberwolf Organics as well. Great food but alittle more expensive than the Nature’s Variety.

Mark asks…

what’s the best dog food for a one year old yellow lab puppy?

My one year old yellow lab’s dog food is Iams. I think it smells bad and he will not eat it without any meat on it. I tried Royal Canin before and he loved that! But I can’t afford it…way too expensive! I tried mixing Natural Choice dog food for a week with his Iams and he hated it :(. What’s the best dog food out there?

admin answers:

Iams, Royal Canin, and Nutro are all low quality dog foods. There is no ‘best’ dog food. The best dog food for your dog is the high quality dog food he does best on.

Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to the dump cheap leftovers and things that aren’t safe for human consumption (from human food processing plants) into their foods. Will it kill your dog? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot.

Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.

Thankfully, there are some excellent dog foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human consumption.

Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Kibbles n’ Bits, Beneful, Ol’Roy.

Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae All Life Stages, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature’s Variety Prairie, Nature’s Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix, Timberwolf Organics.

Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you’re getting what you’re paying for. Less filler material and higher quality ingredients means more concentrated nutrients… This means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!

Seriously on a budget? Two of the most affordable of the higher quality foods would be Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul and Canidae All Life Stages.

Before following your vet’s food recommendation, keep in mind that vets get /very/ little nutritional training during their schooling. Besides that, what training they /do/ get is usually sponsored or taught by… You guessed it, the crappy pet food companies! They also often get kickbacks from the companies for pushing these products at their clinics (Science Diet, Royal Canin etc.)

A great option is to go with an entirely grain-free diet. Many of the high quality foods now put out grain-free formulas. Some good grain-free diets include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature’s Variety Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Canidae Grain Free All Life Stages, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now!, GO Natural Grain Free, Sold Gold Barking At The Moon, Ziwipeak, and Taste of the Wild.

Some pretty decent foods can even be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain-free diet, Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux Organix, Pinnacle, and Halo.

If you can’t find a food, most of the high quality dog food brands have websites with store locators on them that will help you find the store closest to you which supplies their products. Simply type the dog food brand’s name into Google, go to their website, and type your zip code into their store locator.

Another option, if you can’t find anywhere around you that sells good foods, is to order your pet food online. Here’s an excellent place to do so: http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/

Remember that foods should be switched gradually (mixing the new slowly in with the old over the period of about week or so), especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies. For example:
Days 1 & 2: 75% old food, 25% new food
Days 3 & 4: 50% old food, 50% new food
Days 5 & 6: 25% old food, 75% new food
Day 7: 0% old food, 100% new food

Another option for feeding dogs is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:
http://www.rawfed.com/ (RawFed)
http://www.rawlearning.com/ (Jane Anderson’s Raw Learning Site)
http://rawfeddogs.net/ (Raw Fed Dogs)
http://www.rawmeatybones.com/ (Raw Meaty Bones)

http://community.livejournal.com/rawdogs/profile/ (Raw Dogs Livejournal Community, excellent raw feeding information on the profile page and overall helpful community for raw feeding questions)
http://www.rawfed.com/myths/index.html (Myths About Raw Feeding)

Also remember that freefeeding (leaving food down) is the fast lane to canine obesity. Make sure to have scheduled feeding times loosely based on the feeding guidelines on your dog’s food. Adult dogs are typically fed two meals a day.

Sandra asks…

What is the recommended diet for dogs with kidney disease?

My beloved Binney was diagnosed with kidney disease just yesterday. The doc said she has less than a couple of months to live. I’m devastated and would like to make her remaining days easier on her – and her kidneys. Is there some sort of specialized diet I can provide? I would prefer something natural and organic.

Please I’m desperate and if there is something in the local farmer market that helps, include that too!

admin answers:

I’m so sry to hear this. Make sure she drinks lots of water. There is a science diet food that is good for kidney issues I believe it is A/d or maybe i/d or it could be u/d. Petsmart carries it and you will be able to tell which one it is because it should say it on the bag or can. Good Luck and may god bless you and your dog in this time of need.

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Brands

Laura asks…

What is the best food for a miniature dachshund?

I currently have my miniature dachshund on Purina One Healthy Weight Formula Dry Dog Food. What’s the best food for her? A Dachshund-specialized food?
the vet told me to put my dog on Purina
The vet told me to put my dog on Purina One
My dachshund is 6 years old

admin answers:

Breed specific food is a marketing scam. Size specific doesn’t really matter once your dog reaches adult age.

Purina is crap. Most vets do not receive a whole lot of nutritional training, and the seminars they attend are hosted by Hill’s, Purina, etc. They sometimes receive bonuses from the companies for vouching for their products. Go to a holistic vet, and he/she will condemn Purina. Why? Because it’s a bag of cornmeal with some mystery meat and by-products, and artificial colors, preservatives, etc. Added to it.

The best adult dry food on the market has to be Orijen. Compare the ingredients to your dogs current food. It has high protein that most dogs do well on, is grain-free, and can help with weight loss/maintenance, because it does not include so many of the useless carbs crappy supermarket brands have. Orijen is made from fresh regional ingredients passed fit for human consumption, and is independently manufactured, so there is better quality control.

Purina ONE Healthy Weight Management:

Turkey, brewers rice, corn gluten meal, poultry by-product meal, corn bran, whole grain corn, whole grain wheat, oat meal, natural flavors, beef tallow preserved with mixed tocopherols (source of vitamin E), dicalcium phosphate, salt, calcium carbonate, potassium chloride, choline chloride, l-lysine monohydrochloride, vitamin supplements (E, A, B12, D3), zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, riboflavin supplement, niacin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, biotin, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, copper sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, garlic oil, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite.

The turkey is good, but I doubt Purina uses human grade meat and since it’s a fresh meat that is not backed up by a meat meal (already cooked and more concentrated), it will lose water content during processing and drop down the ingredient list.
Brewer’s rice is a nickname for “floor sweepings” rice and has very little nutritional value.
Corn gluten meal is corn, and a common canine/feline allergen. I also doubt Purina uses human grade corn kernel (which has a 99% digestibility), so the digestibility goes down. Many dog owners notice that their dogs have smaller, firmer stools after switching from a supermarket brand to something better. Why? It’s the corn.
Poultry by-product meal is a generic meat source, and the by-products are not specified, which means they could even be beaks, feathers, etc.
That is followed by even more corn.
Wheat is another common canine/feline allergen with little digestibility.
Menadione (synthetic vitamin K) is a controversial ingredient that has been linked to kidney problems in various studies.

Orijen Adult:

Fresh boneless chicken*, chicken meal, fresh boneless salmon*, turkey meal, herring meal, russet potato, peas, sweet potato, fresh boneless turkey*, fresh whole eggs*, fresh chicken liver*, fresh boneless lake whitefish*, fresh boneless walleye*, sun-cured alfalfa, pea fiber, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), organic kelp, pumpkin, chicory root, carrots, spinach, turnip greens, apples, cranberries, blueberries, licorice root, angelica root, fenugreek, marigold flowers, sweet fennel, peppermint leaf, chamomile, dandelion, summer savory, rosemary, vitamin A, vitamin D3, vitamin E, niacin, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, d-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine, folic acid, biotin, vitamin B12, zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, manganese proteinate, copper proteinate, selenium yeast, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Enterococcus faecium.

* DELIVERED FRESH, preservative-free and never frozen.

Thomas asks…

Can anyone recommend a small kibble dry food for my picky chihuahua?

My chihuahua is a very picky eater. Currently she only eats chicken based food and I think she needs a little variety, as she seems to be getting very bored with it. I have tried salmon, bison, sweet potato and duck and she doesn’t like any of them. Does anyone have any suggestions for a non-chicken dry dog food that has a small kibble and only contains the highest quality ingredients. Thank you for your assistance!

admin answers:

A lot of the times with small dogs you have to mix something in with their food to get them to eat it. Examples: ground beef, fish oil ( this one works really well and it’s very good for their skin and coat), any kind of meat that’s chopped super fine so it can be mixed in really well with the dry, canned dog food, or the one that I call doggy crack because dogs go nuts for it, green tripe. Smells AWFUL but wow do they love it and it’s very good for them. Solid Gold sells it in a can that you can buy at Petco.

As far as dry foods go, the two that I’ve found that my very picky Toy Fox Terrier will eat are Wellness “Just for Small Breeds” and Solid Gold “Just a Wee Bit”. You could also try a brand called Timberwolf organics and they make several varieties that are of good quality and the kibbles are TEENY, like pellets almost. Or you could try Innova Evo “Small bites” (although my dog wasn’t too fond of this one)

Good luck 🙂

Mandy asks…

What is the best organic dog food out there with No by products?

I’m feeding my dog the Blue Buffalo brand….I was wondering if there’s anything better?

admin answers:

Castor & Pollux Organix is a good brand. Other good brands that don’t designate themselves as “organic” include Taste of the Wild, Innova, and Wellness. But, Blue Buffalo is also a great brand.

Your Questions About Dog Training Boulder

Maria asks…

can anyone tell me the cheatcodes for firered?

Like shiny pokemon code??
thank you.

admin answers:

National Dex

Have over sixty Pokemon in your Pokedex and defeat the Elite Four. Return to Pallet Town and see the professor. He will give the National Dex to Gary and yourself. You can use it to see the data for all 386 Pokemon.
# Network Machine

This allows you to trade to Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. Fix the Network Machine on One Island. To do this, get the Sapphire and Ruby items and take them to the machine.
# Mystery Gift option

Enter any Pokemon Mart and go to the clipboard that is by the shop keeper on the counter. Take the survey and enter in the words “LINK TOGETHER WITH ALL”. The man will then alert you that you can now have access to the Mystery Gift option, after saving. To make it easier to find the word you are looking for, press Select, which will take you to A-Z mode, then select the a letter to bring up a list of words, beginning with the first letter of the word that it begins with.
# Get all starters

To get all the starters (Bulbasaur,Charmander, and Squirtle), you will need two Game Boy Advances and another Pokemon GBA game. Start with Bulbasaur, then trade it to your other Pokemon game. After that, start a new game. Start with Charmander and trade it. Then, start another new game and start with Squirtle. Keep Squirtle and catch two Pokemon that you do not want. Trade them for the other two starters you traded to your other Pokemon game. You will now have all three starters.
# Aerodactyl

To get the ancient Pokemon Aerodactyl, go to the house to the right of the Museum in Pewter City. Note: You must have Cut. Talk to the scientist and he will give you the Old Amber. Take it to the Lab on Cinnabar Island and let the scientist bring it back to life. It will be at level 5.
# Articuno

Surf south from Fuschia until you hit a barrier. Then, Surf west to the Seafoam Islands. When you see boulders, push them into the pits to reach the legendary bird Articuno.
# Recommended moves for Beedrill

First, catch a Weedle . Then, train it until it turns into a Beedrill. Teach it the TM Aerial Ace . Train it (use it at gyms that use Grass/Bug Pokemon ) until it is at level 50. It should know the move Endeavor. Use it at tight spots.
# Deoxys

To obtain Deoxys, you must travel to Island 9 and push the triangle forward. To do this, you need to obtain the Aurora Ticket, which can only obtained through a Nintendo Event, such as Pokemon Rocks America 2004. Bring your Pokemon Fire Red or Leaf Green cartridge to any of the events in Atlanta, Minneapolis, or Seattle to receive the Aurora Ticket. The same goes for obtaining Lugia, Ho-Oh (both on Island 8, requiring Mystery Pass); and Celebi and Mew (details unknown). Note: Ho-Oh can also be obtained via a link to Pokemon Coliseum. In the Pokemon Fire Red, you will get the attack version of Deoxys.
# Lapras

On the Island 4, go to where you met Lorelli of the Elite Four. Then, Surf on the water . If you are lucky, you will see a wild Lapras.
# Ledyba

Ledyba can be found in Pattern Bush on Six Island.
# Mewtwo

Defeat the Elite Four, then go to the Cerulean City Cave. Mewtwo will be there. You will need HM6 Rock Smash and HM3 Surf.
# Moltres

To get Moltres you need HM4 Strength, HM6 Rock Smash, and HM3 Surf. Go to One Island, and all the way to the right until you reach water. Surf to the north and you will see land. Continue to go north until you hit water again. Then, Surf north again until you reach land. Go up and move the boulders. Continue to go up and you will enter Mt. Ember. Pass the mountain and you will see more boulders up ahead. Move them and you will encounter Moltres, the Legendary Fire Bird Pokemon.
# Zapdos

To catch a Zapdos, go to the Pokemon Center beside the Rock Cave. From the Pokemon Center, go up until you reach water. Surf to the Power Plant and go inside. Find your way around, and at the end you will find Zapdos, the Thunder type Legendary Bird.
# Legendary Dogs

The legendary dog that you get in the game depends on your starter:

Charmander: Suicune (Water)
Squirtle: Raikou (Thunder)
Bulbasaur: Entei (Fire)

To get all three Legendary Dogs, get together with two friends before any of you start the game. Have one player get Charmander, another get Squirtle, and the other get Bulbasaur. Each of you will get one of the legendary dogs: Charmander, Suicune; Squirtle, Raikou; and Bulbasaur, Entei. Once each of you has their own dog, trade one dog for another. For example, player one’s Suicune for player two’s Entei; player three’s Raikou for player one’s Entei; and Player three’s Raikou for player two’s Suicune. Additionally, use the following trick to easily catch Suicune, Raikou, or Entei without a Master Ball. Get a Pokemon the learns the move Mean Look or something similar, or get a Pokemon with the Arena Trap or Shadow Tag abilities to prevent them from escaping. If they do, you will get another chance to catch them, providing you do not make them faint.

# Johto Pokemon

To get your first Pokemon from the Johto Region, defeat the Elite Four. Go to Island 3, then go in the tunnel. Talk to the man and he will give you a Nugget. Go out the door, and there will be a small patch of grass. Walk around in it, and you will find your first Johto Pokemon.
# Duplicate Pokemon

Note: This trick will only work on Pokemon that have a gender. Either male or female will do. For example, if you want a friend’s Charizard but you do not want to trade a level 100 male Venusaur for it, catch a Ditto on Route 13 to 15. Take both your Venusaur and Ditto to 4 Island to the old couple and breed them. The next morning you will have a Bulbasaur egg ready to trade. This can be used to get all the evolutions of Evee. Note: This trick will not work on Mewtwo or most of the legendary Pokemon.

Use the following trick to easily reproduce rare Pokemon, such as Charizard, Lapras, etc. Capture a Ditto in Pokemon Fire Red or Leaf Green. These can be found in the cave at Cerulean. Transfer your Ditto to Pokemon Sapphire or Ruby, then take it to the Daycare couple in Mauville and leave it there. The quickest way to get an egg is to cycle back and forth a few times in front of the Daycare Center until the old man comes out of the gate. The egg he gives you will hatch into the first evolution of whatever Pokemon you put into the daycare. For example, a Charizard will give you a Charmander. Trade with friends to get the other starters, breed an egg, then trade back. The hatched Pokemon will have you as the original trainer. Some Pokemon will not breed in this way, even though they have a gender (such as Latios and Latias).
# Easy money

To get easy money, use a Meowth with the Pay Day attack in wild or trainer battles.
# Infinite Safari Zone time

Enter the Safari Zone, then walk into an area and stop in the grass Then, tap the D-pad, but do not move You will find the Pokemon in that area without wasting steps.

Find one location in the Safari Zone that suits you. Then, just rotate in place. Random Pokemon should you attack you every few rotations.

Go into a patch of grass in the Safari Zone with a Pokemon (like Oddish) that has Sweet Scent. When you use Sweet Scent, you will get attacked by wild Pokemon without having to move. Keep doing this until you find a Pokemon that you want.
# New moves

There are four new moves not found in earlier Pokemon games:

Blast Burn (Fire): Power: 120, Accuracy: 100, leaves the user immobile the next turn.

Hydro Cannon (Water): Power: 120, Accuracy: 100, leaves the user immobile the next turn.

Frenzy Plant (Grass): Power: 120, Accuracy: 100, leaves the user immobile the next turn.

Volt Tackle (Thunder): Power: 120, Accuracy:100, slightly hurts the user.

To get the new moves, you must go to the woman’s house on Cape Brink on Island Two and talk to her. If your starter is Charmeleon, you will get Bast Burn; Squirtle is Hydro Cannon; and Bulbusaur is Frenzy Plant. To get Volt Tackle, you must use an electric Pokemon. You must have the Pokemon first in your party.
# Poison Sting

The Poison Sting attack can always poison if you press and release A at the exact time.. Time it by looking at one of the bubbles. For example, fight a Mankey. The one that crosses the hand to the left of the screen is the one to time it by, by pressing A just as it starts to pass the hand and releasing it just as it pops. It always poisons the enemy. This works for all Pokemon with the Poison Sting ability against all enemies, except for Bug types. Also, the Constrict attack can always get criticals if you press and release A twice while the vines are pulsating.
# Berries

Find a black mark in the grass, then go up to it and press A. Note: This will not work with items such as Big Pearl, Stardust, and Rare Candies.
# Black Belt

After you get to One Island, travel up the path called Kindle Road and go towards the volcano. Along this route, you will encounter several trainers with Fighting-type Pokemon. Have your Pokemon use Thief to steal a Black Belt from each of the Pokemon. After you have a Black Belt, take it off your Pokemon and use the VS Seeker to fight the opponent again. Steal another Black Belt from his other Pokemon. Every Fighting-type on this route is equipped with a Black Belt, which boosts the power of all Fighting-type moves.
# Nuggets

Go to the last person (Team Rocket member) on Nugget Bridge. Lose to that person after you get the Nugget. Repeat this until you have the desired number of Nuggets. Note: If you save the your game after defeating him, you will no longer be able to do this.
# Rare Candy

To get more Rare Candies, look for some Meowths. You are 30% more likely to get one.

I can not post more but there are lots more on this link.

Paul asks…

rabbit help?

i am thinking of getting of a rabbit, but i dont get how to train it with a litter box. How do you train a rabbit to go in the litter box?

admin answers:

Don’t get a rabbit unless you are ready for a lot of commitment. Rabbits aren’t like cats and dogs. I know. I’ve got one, and I am constantly ruled by my Bunny Overlord.

First of all, get a ‘poo pan’ with nice high sides. Rabbits like to get right into the corner and back up to something when they are answering the call of nature, and if the sides aren’t high, you will have bunny body fluids on your wall and floor. I recommend one that is about half a foot tall. You can use plastic crates and cut a side out for easy bunny access. If we has to jump, we ain’t goin in there.

I personally use two high plastic poo pans, next to each other, so that if one is a bit unpleasant and I’m busy I can swap them over. We can also recline lazily in the other pan and chew our cud while we meditate, if the whim takes us.

Rabbits like to use their poo pans for recreation as well as relieving themselves. They will prefer to have a corner to ‘go in’, and a corner with some nice fresh hay to munch while they are contemplating the meaning of life. This is normal. So get a really big pan or two smaller ones near each other.

Use only paper litter. If you use the clumping kind and they eat it (and they will eat it. Rabbits have a penchant for eating things that will kill them, like electrical cords, clay litter, lead paint chips, plaster if there is a hole in the wall, and carpet if it is the right texture and we want to annoy our owners) and they will get a blocked intestinal tract and die. Thsi is called gastrointestinal stasis, and kills a lot of rabbits if they aren’t fed the right things.

When training Bun Bun to use the pan, you need to put some bunny boulders (poo) in the pan, and then encourage your rabbit into the pan. THey will then think “wow, I’ve been here before. I don’t remember that. Oh well, seems like as good a place as any to use as a toilet” and they will start using the pan. They’re pretty smart. They like to be clean and they also like to have a clean poo pan. If it’s too dirty, we’ll go elsewhere for our toilet needs, like behind the couch.

I recommend you google some rabbit care sites and do some reading. There is a lot more to rabbits than most people know, especially for house rabbits. THey are a lot of work, but are very rewarding.

If you find the odd bunny boulder in an unauthorised location (in the hall, near a doorway, or in the corner of another room) this is just a territorial turd. Vacuum or brush it up. Rabbits are herbivores, so their poo is pretty harmless. When we get comfy with our new surroundings, this will cease.

If you need more bunny information in the meantime, email me. I am an experienced Bunny Mother and have learned a lot of things by trial and error.

Susan asks…

Service dog “in training” – help?

Re-ask…

First off, I want everyone to know that this is a last resort and would not be doing this otherwise and would not be doing it again in the future.

I’m going to Vegas in January for a softball tournament (weekend trip). Our dog will be coming with us to the softball fields. The only problem that we’re having is a finding a hotel that permits dogs. This is where the question comes in.

I found a site where I can get a service dog vest and patch and a patch that says “in training“. If I were to pass him off as a legit Service Dog, what else is needed? Would a hotel be asking for any kind of paperwork or anything?

Again, this is a last resort and we do not feel safe staying in a Motel 6 (that do permit dogs). His usual dog-sitter is coming with us, and we will NOT board him.

Ideas, suggestions… ?

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Reviews

Paul asks…

should i buy beneful dog food for my husky?

i have never offered beneful food to my husky, so i am not sure. Will the husky like it? He is 1 and a half year old male.

admin answers:

Beneful is one of the worst foods on the market.

They even *advertise* the fact that it’s full of fillers. You watch a Beneful commercial, and they have ears of corn flying all around the screen.

Here are the ingredients:
Ground yellow corn, chicken-by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), rice flour, beef, soy flour, Minerals (tricalcium phosphate, salt, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite), sugar, sorbitol, water, animal digest, phosphoric acid, sorbic acid (a preservative), L-Lysine monohydrochloride, dried peas, dried carrots, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, Vitamins [Vitamin E, Vitamin A, niacin, Vitamin B-12, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, biotin, thiamine mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), Vitamin D-3], added color (Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2), DL-Methionine, glyceryl monostearate, garlic oil.

Yuck. Fillers, artificial colors, low quality ingredients, etc. And not a single whole meat in the top 5 ingredients!

Here is a review of Beneful dog food:
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/showproduct.php?product=69&cat=all

=== === ===

Read the ingredients on the food you buy. Go with a high quality dog food.

Here is my “short list” of rules when I am looking at dog ingredients:
1) When I chose a dog food, I chose one high meat content. I want to see preferably at least 2-3 out of the top 5 ingredients be meat or meat meal (first ingredient must be!).
2) I want to see higher quality grains, such as barley, brown rice, and oatmeal, instead of seeing wheat and corn. Or an alternative starch/carbohydrate such as potatoes or sweet potatoes.
3) I don’t want to see any byproducts.
4) I don’t want to see a lot of fillers.
5) I don’t want to see preservatives that are believed to be carcinogens (BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin).
6) I don’t want to see artificial colorings such as the Red, Blue, and Yellow dyes.
7) I don’t want to see added sugars (sugar, corn syrup).
8) I don’t want to see mystery meats (meats identified only as “meat” or “poultry”.)

Here is an article about byproducts:
http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=ingrd

And an article on what ingredients to avoid:
http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=badingredients

There is no single food that is “best”. For example, some dogs thrive on grain-free foods, while grain-free is too rich for other dogs.

What you want to find is the high-quality food that *your dog* does best on

Some GOOD foods are :
* Artemis – http://www.artemiscompany.com/
* California Natural – http://www.naturapet.com/brands/california-natural.asp
* Canidae – http://www.canidae.com/
* Chicken Soup – http://www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com/
* EVO – http://www.naturapet.com/brands/evo.asp
* Fromm – http://www.frommfamily.com/
* Innova – http://www.naturapet.com/brands/innova.asp
* Merrick – http://www.merrickpetcare.com/
* Nature’s Variety – http://www.naturesvariety.com/
* Orijen – http://www.championpetfoods.com/orijen/orijen/
* Solid Gold – http://www.solidgoldhealth.com/
* Taste of the Wild – http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/
* Timberwolf Organics – http://timberwolforganics.com/
* Wellness – http://www.omhpet.com/wellness/

Or check this website for good foods: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/
(I recommend only feeding foods rated 4, 5, or 6 stars. Anything 3 stars or less, I would stay away from.)

Stay away from grocery stores brands. They are low-quality foods chalk full of fillers, preservatives, dyes, etc.. (Grocery store foods are those like Beneful, Old Roy, Alpo, Pedigree, etc.)

Beware “premium” foods. “Premium” does not mean good nutritionally, and is not a nutritionally high quality food. It has the same types of ingredients as grocery store foods, just a bit better quality of those not-so-good ingredients. (Premium foods are those like Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, etc..)

Another thing to be wary of: A lot of vets will recommend what they sell in their office. They get profit from the brands they keep on their shelves, that’s why they push it. Truth is, vet schools don’t focus a lot on nutrition. It’s not saying that a vet is a bad vet because he recommends those foods, a lot of vets just are told “this is good food”, so they pass the message along without proper nutrition knowledge. Also, some dog food brands (like Hills) support vet schools, so vets have heard of it from the time they start college, which makes them think it’s good as well.

Higher quality food may seem more expensive at first, but it evens out. The higher quality the food, the less fillers eaten (and therefore the less poop comes out the other end). Your dog eats more to try to get the nutrition it needs, and most of the food just passes right on through. Also, it will make your animals healthier, so you save money on vet bills in the long run.

“Big box” petstores like Petco and Petsmart rarely have quality foods. (I do believe that PetCo sells “Solid Gold” and “Natural Balance” brands and Petsmart sells “Blue Buffallo”, which are all quality foods, but most of the foods aren’t.)

Also, grocery stores and Walmart aren’t good places to buy food either.

Your best bets for getting quality dog food are:
– small, locally owned petstores
– dog boutiques
– farm supply stores

When switching foods, do it gradually. I do this over about a two week timespan:
25% food A, 75% food B
50% food A, 50% food B
75% food A, 25% food B
100% food A
.

Carol asks…

What brand of dog food is best for my 3 year old pug?

i would appreciate it if someone from the philippines would answer this question because most of the brands sold in the other countries, even in the U.S., are not sold in the phils.. i would prefer a cheaper brand as i have been feeding my my dog eukanuba which i know is one of the more expensive brands.

admin answers:

Eukanuba is crap.

Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to dump cheap leftovers in.

Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae All Life Stages, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature’s Variety Prairie, Nature’s Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix.

Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you’re getting what you’re paying for. Less filler material means more concentrated nutrients… This means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!

A great option is to go with an entirely grainless diet. Many of the high quality foods now put out grainless formulas. Some good grainless diets include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature’s Variety Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Merrick Before Grain, Canidae Grain Free All Life Stages, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now! And Sold Gold Barking At The Moon, Taste of the Wild.

Some pretty decent foods can even be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic, Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux Organix, Pinnacle, and Halo. If you can’t find a food, most of the high quality food brands have websites with store locators on them.

Remember that foods should be switched gradually, especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies.

Another option for feeding dogs is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:

Lizzie asks…

Have you heard any thing about these dog foods?

I’ve been online lately looking for a different dog food and I was wondering if yall have heard anything about KARMA (an organic dog food) and EVO (a dog food that has no grains)?

I heard a lot of good reviews on the site I found them on but I was looking for a second Opinion… which I know I can get from yall…. Thanks for the help!

admin answers:

Innova EVO is a fantastic food. Along with maybe Timberwolf Organics, Orijen and Solid Gold Barking at the Moon, it is one of the best commercially available foods in terms of quality of ingredients. The only problem with grain free foods is that they are calorie/ingredient dense meaning they probably won’t suit a dog with a sensitive stomach. Assuming your dog has no foody issues, you can’t get much better than EVO.

Your Questions About Rough Collie

Lisa asks…

How big should a 4 month old female Rough Collie puppy be?

I am just curious how big a 4 month old Rough Collie puppy should be. Both parents of my puppy are insize, but my mother made a comment about her being small. It has been sooo long since I have had a Collie puppy that I don’t really know what the average size for one is. At 13.5 weeks, she weighed 16.4lbs. I am hoping that someone that breeds Collies will see this.

admin answers:

Well my shelties were a pound per week, so at 13 weeks, they weighed 13 pounds. Since Collies are a larger breed, I would think 16 pounds would be about right.

George asks…

whats the different between Rough Collie and Shetland Sheepdog?

Hi, i wanna get a puppy, but i dont know i should get rough collie or shetland sheepdog, can u pls tell me something about this two dogs?

admin answers:

A rough collie can go up to 75 lbs…a sheltie can go up to 25 lbs…

Daniel asks…

Anybody know of any good Rough Collie breeders in the western United States?

Hi, My family and I are looking for a good rough collie breeder in the western united states, preferably the pacific northwest. I’ve searched google quite a bit and have only found websites without contact info or sites that haven’t been updated since 1997. Ideally we would like to find puppies and we’re not necessarily looking for show quality puppies as this will strictly be a companion dog for our family.

Thanks!

admin answers:

Go to the akc.org site to find a quality breeder, not necessarily a show breeder, although with the collie eye problem that would probably be a safer bet for you.
I’ve owned 3 roughs and bought them at various times from show breeders at a fair price. Not all puppies in a show breeders litters are show quality, so they sell the pets cheaper but they still have all the health tests back of them unlike most hobby breeders dogs.

Your Questions About Dog Training

Charles asks…

Are there any colleges in the US with a major in zoology and minor in dog training?

Just curious. I have a lot of interest in Zoology, but also would like to learn more about dog training and behavior too once I’m in college.

admin answers:

Do an internet search for dog training schools in your area. Zoology is a commonly offered major, but I’ve never heard of a dog training minor. You may be able to minor in companion animals, however.

Nancy asks…

How much should I charge for dog-training and sitter?

I’m an experienced dog trainer (I’ve fully trained my three dogs, as well as several of my friends dogs which included a pitbull, rottweiler, and german sheperd) and needing some extra cash for how everything is so expensive these days, I want to take up a part-time job of dogtraining and sitting. How much should I charge? What would you pay for a personal trainer? By the way, I’m 17 1/2.

admin answers:

For the first few customers, go low (like $10-$15, no more then $20) just so that you can get experienced even more. When you’ve trained a few customers dogs till they are satisfied, use them are recommendations and go higher. Of course, I wouldn’t pay no more then $50 for a person trainer.

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Amazon

Artemis,California Natural,Canidae,Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul,Eagle Pack Holistic Selects,EVO,Fromm,Innova,Merrick,Nature’s Variety,Orijen,Solid Gold,Taste of the Wild,Timberwolf Organics,Blue Buffalo,Wellness.

Only Purina,Gravy Train and Iams stuff.

So,I want to buy some online. But,my mom doesn’t have a working credit card right now,so I can’t buy off anything but amazon(I use amazon gift cards).
So,I was thinking of buying some “Taste of the Wild” online for my Chihauhua,Coco, since Blue Buffalo is too much.

But,is that safe? They’re packaged,they’re inside the bag,so it shouldn’t be bad.

admin answers:

Well, have you searched any local pet stores (I don’t mean chain-stores like petco)? I also believe Blue Buffalo is in Petsmart.
Search local dog boutiques/stores they usually stock up on healthy dog food like the one’s you’ve listed, some even deliver from their store to your door.

It probably is safe, if something is wrong you can just complain to amazon.com.

Lisa asks…

Getting a chihuahua?

i’m pretty shore i’v got every thing my new pup will need could some one please make a liste of things i need and were to get them online so i can check .
thankyou

admin answers:

You’ll want to start your pet out on a good quality pet food. With the new pet food scare going around you have to be especially cautious in what you buy your pet to eat. If you are interested in purchasing your food online I suggest Newman’s Own Organic Pet Foods.

I’ve raised my dogs on Nutro Natural Choice brand dog food. It’s found at pet stores. My pets have had healthy lives and I honestly feel that pet food had a lot to do with it. I use the “natural” one because adding coloring to foods caused problems for one of my dogs, she had allergies to it. Unfortunately several brands of their can dog food and cat food wound up on the recall list of pet foods that had a tainted ingredient that was harming pets. So I am not as confident as I once was about recommending Nutro variety pet foods. Even though, thankfully, our pets are still healthy and had no problems from eating the food.

You’ll also want to take your pet to the vet for regular check ups and to a groomer about every six weeks to have the nails trimmed and ears cleaned, if you aren’t going to do those things yourself.

One thing I don’t think any pet owner should be without is a something called a “Kong” it’s hard rubber hollow toy. You put a treat inside the toy and your pet slowly works it out. It’s a great tool to have when you need to leave your dog alone in the house. It really helps with separation anxiety which so many dogs have and are very destructive because of it. They come in all sizes and several colors. I can’t stress enough how good these are for your pet’s behavior.

Since you are getting a Chihuahua you’ll want to get a sweater for your little one. They get cold easily and sweaters and little shirts come in handy for them.

They also have a reputation of being yappy and biters. Which I don’t think is true behavior trait of the breed I think people coddle them too much and that makes them insecure and neurotic cause the aggressive behaviors. Take your dog to an obedience class in your area and you’ll learn how to be the pack leader to your pet and both of you will have a much better relationship with each other.

I prefer a harness over a collar when walking a dog, collar seem to choke them too often. I also like the retractable leashes when I walk my dog. It gives them a little more freedom but I am still in control.

Amazon.com has great prices on Advantage and Frontline plus flea and tick repellants. Much better deal than you’ll get from a pet store or the vet. Plus they have free shipping if your order is over $25.

I guess that’s all I can think of right now. I love dogs and think life with them is far better than life without them. I’ve been around them literally all my life. I know I didn’t give you a list but advice on what is important for the life of your pet.

Don’t forget to spay or neuter your pet for their health and a longer life!!

Laura asks…

Food Ideas for toddlers with Severe Allergies?

I just got my test results back for my 13 month olds allergy test. She scored a 695, and from my understanding is extremely high. She is allergic to milk, soybean, codfish, eggs, and peanuts. (as well as cat and dog dander). Her father, siblings, and myself have none of these allergies; but I know that she is not the only child like this. I don’t want to restrict her diet, but it looks like I have to. But I would also like for her to get some sort of variety. Does anyone have any suggestions, recipes, websites, etc….ANYTHING will help!!!

admin answers:

I definitely suggest you take your time shopping around the organic section of the grocery store, as that’s where allergen-free food is usually found and properly/clearly labeled as being “dairy-free” etc.
For butter, you may be able to use shortening (not particularly healthy, but usually non-dairy) or Earth’s Balance vegan spread. You may also be able to use rice milk in place of regular milk in some recipes.
If you poke around Amazon, you can find a lot of recipe books for kids with food allergies.
There are also a lot of sites if you search for something like “food allergy recipes”… Here’s one: http://www.foodallergykitchen.com/pages/recipes.php You can search for recipes here by the allergen it cannot contain.
Most products have an allergen alert, but not all, so you will have to get used to scrutinizing the lists of ingredients on everything.
I also recommend buying utensils, a cookie sheet, and a pan just for her food, as cross-contamination happens. It’s also a good idea to use a separate sponge to clean them, so you are not wiping allergens on her things. For her more severe allergies, you would be best to keep them out of the home altogether, especially when if it causes a breathing problem.
My son is gluten-free/casein-free, and it was overwhelming at first trying to find all the right products. It will get a lot easier for you- You’ll have so many things memorized, and you’ll be able to come up with your own recipes based on what she can eat. At 13 months, she won’t demand a ton of variety, so you have a lot of time to play around. Good luck. :]

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Petsmart

Michael asks…

What are the nutritional requirements for a chinchilla?

What type of food do chinchillas need? I’m looking for a high quality chinchilla food but I’m not sure what their requirements are as far as the source of protein (meat or vegetable/fruit based), and the amounts of protein, fat, fiber, and carbohydrates. The only food that seems to be recommended on the web is Mazuri, but it is made by Purina so if it is anything like their dog or cat food it isn’t going to be too healthy. Thanks!

admin answers:

Nutrena Naturewise 16%
Purina Advanced Nutrition Rabbit Sho or Pro
Tradition
Oxbow
APD
Mazuri (Last place in my book)

Those are the best foods on the market right now for chins. There are some long-time ranchers who make their own feed, but they don’t advertise it, and usually don’t sell it in small quantities. Owbow and Mazuri you can get at either Petco or PetSmart, the others are all through feed stores or from on-line sources (individuals). Stay away from the other crap you can buy in pet stores. Treat filled foods and ones that sit on shelves for 2 years before being purchased are hardly going to benefit your chin.

Mazuri used to be a really popular feed, mostly because that’s all anybody knew about or could get. Now though, many people have switched from it because it has given their chins diarrhea. It seems like Mazuri tried to cover that up by adding acidophilus to the mix, but in my opinion that’s putting a band-aid on it, not fixing what caused the diarrhea. There are still people who use it and swear by it, but a growing number are switching to what they feel is a better feed alternative.

You want your fiber to be high and your protein low. Ideally, protein would be 15% or less, though most feeds don’t hit that. I feed the Nutrena at 16% and I’m really happy with it. It and PANR are rabbit feeds, but there are many pet owners and breeders who feed them and get excellent results. You can’t ‘buy just any rabbit food though, those two brands are tried, tested, and approved by actual chinchilla folk.

If you just need small amounts (not a 50 pound bag) you can check the classifieds at http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com. Lots of people will buy 50 pound bags then want to split them because they won’t come near to using that much. It’s still actually cheaper to buy that 50 pound bag though than it is to buy a smaller bag at a pet store. Some other people also take what they will need, then donate the excess to an animal shelter. If you just want smaller amounters, you can find them in the classifieds as well.

As far as treats, nix the raisins. They are high in sugar and chinchillas don’t digest sugar well. There are much better treats for your chin, and they don’t come from the pet store either. Bite sized nonsugared shredded wheat, dried rosehips, organic rosebuds, a pinch of old fashioned (not quick) oats, and chinchilla safe wood chews are a much better alternative to raisins.

Nancy asks…

What is the healthiest dog food and the healthiest cat food?

I have a puppy that is 13 weeks old and I have one inside cat and one outside cat. I want to feed them something healthy but I don’t want to have to drive a half hour away just to buy it.

admin answers:

Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to dump cheap leftovers in. Will it kill your dog/cat? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot.

Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.

Thankfully, there are some excellent dog and cat foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human consumption.

Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Kibbles n’ Bits, Beneful, Ol’Roy, Whiskas, Fancy Feast, Friskies, Meow Mix.

Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae All Life Stages/Felidae, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature’s Variety Prairie, Nature’s Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix, Timber Wolf Organics.

Some good grainless diet’s include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature’s Variety Instinct, Orijen, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now! And Sold Gold Barking At The Moon (dogs)/Sold Gold Indigo Moon (cats).

Some of the high end foods can be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness and Solid Gold. If you can’t find a food, most of the high quality food brands have websites with store locators on them.

Remember that foods should be switched gradually, especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies.

Another option for feeding dogs and cats is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:
http://www.barfworld.com/
http://www.rawfed.com/
http://www.rawfedcats.org/
http://www.rawlearning.com/
http://www.wysong.net/controversies/rawmeat.shtml

Now the question is, for cats, do you feed wet or dry? Wet is the correct answer. The reason is, in the wild, cats normally get most of their water content directly from their prey items and drink very little. Domestic cats are no different, and because of the fact that they are designed to take in water with their meal, they have a very low thirst drive. Cats often just don’t drink enough. This leads to urinary tract infections and crystals. The bit about dry food being better for teeth is a myth and has not been proven in the least. Canned/wet food is better because it more closely mimics the cat’s natural diet. More on why canned food is best:

http://cats.about.com/cs/catfood/a/canned_food.htm
http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?action=library&act=show&item=whycatsneedcannedfood

Another option to get cats to drink more would be a cat fountain. Cats tend to like to drink from running water and cat fountains see to that need, encouraging cats to take in more water.

David asks…

What is the best type or brand of food to feed my two geriatric dogs?

I have an 11 and 15 year old dogs. I want to make sure they are getting the best food at this stage in their life.

What is the best food for them as seniors?

admin answers:

A high quality one! You might use a formula designed for senior dogs as well.

Before following your vet’s food recommendation, keep in mind that vets get /very/ little nutritional training during their schooling. Besides that, what training they /do/ get is usually sponsored or taught by the crappy pet food companies! They also often get paid to sell some of their products at their clinics (Science Diet, Royal Canin etc.)

Another option, if you can’t find anywhere around you that sells good foods, is to order your pet food online. Here’s an excellent place to do so: http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/

Remember that foods should be switched gradually (mixing new slowly in with the old over about a two week period), especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies.

Your Questions About Dog Training Classes Denver

Chris asks…

How much does a puppy cost?average?

i want to buy one a german sheperd

admin answers:

Please to go petfinder.com and take a look for your area. I would recommend looking at the ones in shelters first — rescue first :-). But, that is up to you. Please take it to doggie classes. If you live in the Denver Metro area in Colorado, check out Clearwater dog training, they also run a rescue for German Shepherds and their dogs are well trained and fun to be around.

Donna asks…

How can I keep my female pitbull 1 1/2 yrs from running away, and walk or hang out with her without a leash?

Training a dog with no leash

admin answers:

Terriers are extremely difficult to get reliable off-leash, even if you’re an expert trainer. You have to start when they are 8 weeks old, getting them to follow you and stay on your property. Once the dog has learned that she can run away, you’ll never get her to forget that she can. If a barking dog or a cat or a squirrel comes along – wham! – there goes your dog. Instinct is much more powerful than training.

You’ve also got a problem because of the pit bull’s reputation. People who see a loose pit bull may panic and scream and run – that will make even the mildest dog chase them. If your dog runs after them and the person is hit by a car, YOU will be liable since most communites require all dogs to be leashed. Your dog could also be injured or even shot by a cop in some places (like Denver, rumor has it).

Read some great books on training. (Try not to pick books randomly – there are a lot of bad books out there also!) These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com

The Koehler Method of Dog Training – by William Koehler has some good techniques about off-leash training, but you’ll have to modify the method and make it a lot more fun for your terrier. They are much smarter and more stubborn than Shepherds and Goldens. You can’t do twenty repetitions of sit-down-sit-down with a terrier. He will get pissed off and turned off.

Richard asks…

Argh! This is so frustrating!?

Okay so this guy from the Denver post came to my door. I poked the door open a little bit and greeted him. He and I spoke for a little white and then my Chihuahua came out of the front door to greet him. I asked him to step inside so the dog wouldn’t run off. He did and I closed the door. We spoke for a bit and then I said “I’m interested but I’ll have to speak with my fiance before signing up.” He abruptly opened the door and let my dog out(on purpose) and walked off. I ran after my dog and got him. The man kept walking as if nothing happened. I screamed “A**hole!” at the top of my lungs as I walked inside with my dog. He looked back causally and continued at the same pace. I was not happy. How would you feel?

PS: I’m getting a whole bunch of baby gates and I’m currently in the process of door training my dog with distractions. He’s working on it and so am I.

admin answers:

Hahaha i know exactly how u feel i have a min pin, and had the same thing happen i hate it when ppl c im trying to keep her inside and they just radomly open the door giving her the chance to run off…..its irritating cuz i had to chase her down the block but like u i also decided to invest in classes and baby gates, now thats all an issue of the past..

Your Questions About Collie

George asks…

How much would a male border collie weigh at 10 months to 1 years old?

I am looking at getting a border collie for my townhouse next year. I’ve done a lot of research on it and will be able to give it plenty of exercise. My townhouse rules, though, prohibit dogs over 25 lbs. I will graduate from college and be on my own in a year where I can get less lenient rules, but will a border collie be under 25 lbs at 1 year old.

admin answers:

No, a Border Collie will not be under 25# at 10 months to a year old, esp a male.

Chris asks…

How active would a Border Collie x Spaniel be?

I found a Border Collie x Spaniel and he is 2 years old and he is desperate for a home. How many hours would i need to excersise him. If i do get him i would plan on giving him a daily walk. How many hours would be enough excersise for him?) and i was planning on playing fetch etc in the backyard.
Oh sorry i didnt put this is.. Its from a shelter.

admin answers:

Border Collie-2 hours to keep them calm and satisfied.
Spaniels-Generally 1-2 hours.

So, I would say a 45 minute walk in the morning, half an hour play time in the afternoon, and an hour run at night. Yep, that outta do it!

You also need to provide heaps of mental stimulation. Obedience training, interactive toys, hiding food around the house, etc. BCs are incredibly smart and need something to do or else they become destructive.

I would bet money this dog is need of a desperate home because of his exercise levels. Most likely he doesn’t have much training and is destructive because of lack of mental stimulation.

Just realize he may be some work the first few weeks you have him. And also remember that this dog will be a huge commitment.

Good luck!

William asks…

Should i get a collie although I already have a working spaniel?

I would LOVE a border collie. I’ve wanted one for years because i do agility with my other dog which is a english working cocker spaniel. Im always outside working with my other dog, but having a border collie will just put the icing on the cake! I find them absoloutly fantastic and so so clever. I have worked with a few of them before at my agility club, running with them at shows and everything and i also know everything about them. Its just a matter of working two dogs. Will this need to work get in the way of showing my other dog aswell? Thankyou very much for your help!

admin answers:

First rule with Border Collies:

You can never know everything about them. They will always surprise you.

However, back to the question at hand. Border Collies excel at agility and anything really that engages their minds and their brilliant physical attributes and talents.

Please bare in mind though that they have an infinite level of energy. My two BC’s hike with me for most of the day on my days off and they can come home, sleep for half and hour, and be willing to go out again.

If you can honestly say you have the time and a 14+ year commitment then I think a BC would be a good addition to your family. However, BC’s, if not properly socialised can be quite an anxious breed so be sure to get your pup from a reputable breeder that has a line of brilliant herders/workers with great temperaments.

Hope this helps.

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food

Sandra asks…

We are hearing so much about additives, what’s the best kind of dog food to feed your dog?

raw fed diet, organic, dog food found in the frozen food section or just the everyday dry kibble you find in the grocery store?

admin answers:

Personally, I use Evo food for my husky. She had been eating Purina, and something in the food upset her stomach and caused very runny stool. Through talking with my vet and experimentation, we figured out that my puppy seems to have a sensitivity to grains. This particular food has no grains in it at all, and is based on meats. Its still a dry dog food, so I can just toss the bag in a big rubbermaid tub in the closet. Makes storage of the food easy, and since its dry, its easy to take food with us when we travel. About once a week she gets a can of the same brand as a treat. She still gets table scraps occasionally, but I try to watch which ones she gets. Lol she thought she’d died and gone to heaven the other day when I accidentally dropped a piece of bacon!

I like the Evo food because its of a high enough quality that technically I could sit down and eat a bowl of it and be fine. There are a lot of brands that would potentially make me sick if I were to do that.

I included the website for the food I use for the dog, and an article from the Animal Protection Institute on dog foods and the nasty stuff we don’t want to think about that happens with that food. The site has quite a few articles on similar topics, I’d suggest looking over much of the site.

Bil Jac Dog Food? I got a free sample at PetSmart yesterday?

I have read an equal amount of good and bad things about Bil Jac. In one I read it helps get rid of the tear satains on Maltese’s and others I read that it causes gum disease. Would you recomend this for my Maltese? He usually eats organic dog food, would it be bad to switch? Do you feed your dog Bil Jac?

Here is a site that will show you which dog foods are the best and the worst. I suggest that you get any one of the dog foods that are top rated.

Most of grocery store dog food formulas, like IAMS, Pedigree, Science Diet, Purina, and etc contain “meat and bone meal” which has been known to contain dead dogs and cats that were euthanized in animal shelters. Their bodies are picked up and bought by the truck load by “rendering plants” , that also pick up road kill, dead live stock, and etc. They are shredded, and boiled. They skim off the fat on the top of the “soup” and collected it and sell it to pet food companies as “animal fat”, the rest of the animals’ remains are crushed up, dried and sold to dog and cat food companies as meat and bone meal.
You can read more about it here.

Here is an article where the owner of a rendering plant talks about it. He says that cremating the dead shelter animals would cause pollution, and that rendering them is good.

Ruth asks…

How to properly switch an adult dogs dry dog food?

My pitbull currently eats a certain kind of dry dog food. That said, I want to switch my dogs food to a more organic and higher quality dry dog food.
What is the proper routine/process to introduce the new dry food and how long is the process/routine?

admin answers:

Try mixing a little of the new into the old. Gradually increase the proportion of new until you are switched over. Keep an eye on your pets reaction, but typically figure on something like a week or so. And best of luck 🙂
