Your Questions About Collier

Maria asksā€¦

Where should we start our lives as newlyweds?

My fiance and I are looking to relocate to a smaller city somewhere in the United States. I am a teacher and he is in the golf course industry. We have debated about moving to Florida (specifically the Collier County area), but I am concerned that this won’t meet our community wants. I would like to move some place that values education, has plenty of museums, and has a variety of culture. We love the warm weather and enjoy being outside. We do plan on having a large family, so it is also important that we live in an affordable environment.

admin answers:

Well… My husband’s family (Aunt, Uncles, Cousins..ect..) Most of them lived in Lawrence, MA. One day they heard about Buford, GA, and decided to come and take a look.. THEY LOVED IT!! And everybody moved here.. That was almost two years ago.. My husband and I got married 1 year ago and we love it here!! It’s a nice place to raise your childrens… And we already have a 3 month old šŸ˜‰

Your Questions About Rough Collie Shedding

Helen asksā€¦

Would acupuncture help or even cure my allergies dogs?

Ok, so I really want a dog! The breed I would like to get would probably be a Rough Collie. I know they are heavy shedders and are not the best for allergies but I really want one. Would acupuncture help or not?

admin answers:

Depends on how bad your allergies are. Acupuncture will help some but you would have to be going every week. That’s a lot of money to spend when you have other options. I’d find a breed that doesn’t shed so much (like a poodle)

William asksā€¦

Why is my Rough Coat collie shedding in the Minnesota cold?

I don’t understand why this is happening. It is February and in Minnesota; February could be the coldest month of the winter and we just came out of a deep freeze. Pepper was out in the very cold during the day and in the house at night. The other dogs I have are not shedding like she is, she is shedding like it is April.

admin answers:

It may be the fact that she’s going in and out so much. The heat from the house may be drying out her coat. Perhaps you could keep her indoors instead of leaving her outside during the day? I’m not suggesting leaving her out at night by any means!

The other thing you may want to do is add some omega oil in her food. One of my labs is blowing her coat now. It’s odd because the other 3 are not and my mixed breed isn’t either. Only the one. I’ve upped the fish oil caps in her food.

My dogs are all house dogs and only go out to potty and play. We’ve started running a humidfier in the house as well. It’s really dry in the house and maybe it’s just affecting her worse than anyone else.

Mary asksā€¦

What should the grooming routine for a rough coated collie and what are the best products?

I’m a little intimidated by all the fur. I’m afraid I won’t get all the shampoo out or hurt the coat by brushing it wrong.

admin answers:

A rough collie should only be bathed when absolutely necessary. And with any long-coated breed, you just need to keep rinsing them until the poor dog almost feels like he’s water logged! What’s easiest with a coated breed is if you dilute the shampoo with about 1/3 water so it pours through the coat more evently. You’ll find it’s going to make it a bit easier to gently massage through the coat, then rinse out.

As for brushing, you won’t hurt his coat! You need a good quality pin brush which is for line brushing the whole dog. You start at whatever end you prefer and with the dog lying on his side, brush in a “line”, one small section at a time, being very careful to get down to the skin.

You also need a good slicker, but this brush is used only to tease out mats. You need to be careful with it because it can cause slicker burn if you’re rough on the dog’s skin.

It’s not at all hard to groom a collie, but if you could get your dog’s breeder or someone else with a coated dog to show you the line brushing technique, it would make things much simpler. Brush him out once or twice a week (oftener during shedding season) and you don’t need to feel intimidated by his coat!

Your Questions About Dogs Life Jackets

Lisa asksā€¦

What is the best dog life jacket?

I have looked at several online, but I haven’t found anyone who has compared them against each other. I have looked at the Ruff Wear, EzyDog, and Kyjen Outward Hound jackets. I’m looking for personal experience with these jackets or any other life jacket you think is the best. By the way, the jacket would be for an Australian Shepherd who is about 50 pounds.

admin answers:

I have a great life jacket for my 73 lb. German Shepherd.

It’s by Salus.

It’s been used a lot and is still doing great. It works well and if you need to lift him into the boat it has handles on top for that purpose. This is a higher quality life jacket and costs more than the cheap garbage (Outward Hound) from bix box pet stores (that were broken and falling apart while still on the shelf!)

The size for our dog (I believe Large) was about $100.

I highly recommend Salus life jackets for dogs.

James asksā€¦

What size life jacket does my Pomeranian need?

I’m going to be kayaking a lot this summer, in lakes and rivers throughout Michigan. I want to bring my Pomeranian with me, he’s about 11-12 pounds, and I’m wondering what size life jacket does he need?

I know dogs can swim, but if we tip in the middle of a lake he might get fatigued.

admin answers:

XS will work! This is the vest that I got for my basset hound (bassets do not swim very well). It is called the MTI UnderDog. The floatation is under the dogs belly rather than on its back, it is designed to keep him/her up and on top of the water.

Your Questions About Rough Collie For Sale

Sandra asksā€¦

how to find a reputable breeder?

I was wondering, how do I find a reputable breeder. I know they won’t place an ad in the classifieds but I don’t know where else to look. I do not trust internet sites selling dogs because I doubt a good breeder would place a puppy for sale on the internet.

I know good breeder usually have you place a down payment on one before they even breed their dog.

admin answers:

Decide what breed of dog you want.
Then contact either the parent club, or your local club-which will be a member of the Local Club.

EXAMPLE-Say you want a Rough Collie

You could contact the Collie Club of America or one of the local Clubs

Say you live in Northern California- The Northern California Collie Club.

Then you will get a breeder referral from them.

This will be for a reputable breeder that is a member in good standing in the club.

ADD: ANY BACKYARD BREEDING CROOK can advertise in magazines such as Dog Fancy or even the AKC website. They do NOT SCREEN BREEDERS.

AND ANYONE can put up a website.

Good lord, do NOT let that be how you pick a breeder.

Only go to a website if you have a referral FROM the breed club.

Do you know of any sheltie breeders/sheltie puppies for sale in Calgary?

I’m looking to buy a female sable and white (or sable merle) sheltie puppy (7-10 weeks preferably). Hah, I’m pretty specific. Anyway, does anyone know of any reputable sheltie breeders with available puppies like this? Or does anyone know of any puppies for sale that roughly meet this criteria? Thanks a lot! šŸ˜€

admin answers:

Here is the weekly ONLINE Sheltie Magazine with many many reputable breeders on the site.

They also have a breeders directory.

Always make sure the breeder is a member in good standing with the parent club

http://www.sheltiesonline.com/contents.php

Nothing wrong with being specific. When I wanted my Rough Collie, I wanted a Sable and White female, who was white factored and had a blaze, and I got her!

Looks like you have a Shetland Sheepdog club in Alberta as well!

Contact them

Mandy asksā€¦

my dog has liver disease/infection, what is her prognosis?

She is nine years old and has been very unwell. After lots of tablets (antibiotics and liver pills) she has improved, no longer jaundiced and eating without being sick. I am still worried that she may relapse or even have a tumor. Has anyone had any experiance of this with their dog?

admin answers:

His prognosis is likely pretty grim. Is the disease or infection limited ONLY to the liver? It rarely ever stays that way if it is. The liver has a few functions, one of them being as a filter for your dog’s blood. But, the liver is only a secondary filter for the kidneys. When a dog is having liver difficulties, he almost always is having kidney problems as well…and that’s a whole other ballgame. Be careful with the medications you give her, even if they ARE prescribed by a vet. It has been my experience that vets don’t know everything and sometimes they just make things worse. With the advent of the internet, there is no reason not to begin research on your dog’s condition and take a proactive stance in his care. Once you really get into doing the research, you’ll be suprised to find out what your vet is doing wrong. For instance, how many of those medications he prescribed are metabolized and filtered through the liver, which is already compromised and doesn’t need the extra workload?? Did he mention anything about natural herbs, like Milk Thistle, and it’s benefits for the liver? Although I really like my vet, I will never EVER take his word as being final. No vet is God, and none of them know everything there possibly is to know. Nor do I expect them to. When my dog is ill, I hit the internet and the books and I have come across many discrepancies between them and my vet. I dont take the final word of human doctors either. Put your computer to good use and do some research. Find out what you can do to prevent a relapse and to keep your dog comfortable as long as possible. Vets dont have the vested interest in your dog that you do, and they dont lose any sleep when another dog dies. I’m sure there are many who vets who truly care, but NONE of them can possibly care as much about your dog as you do. It is ultimately your responsibility to make sure your dog continues with a reasonably good quality of life, and you cannot shirk this responsibility off on your vet. Good Luck.

Your Questions About Collie Man

Lizzie asksā€¦

Is Peyton Manning better right now than he was at his prime age?

Is Peyton Manning better right now or was he better at his prime? Im just saying that his stats were very good at prime but couldnt get a super bowl ring until he got older. Is he better than Brady or is he his old self where he use to choke in big games?

admin answers:

I guess you could say he’s better. His overall knowledge has gotten so much better over the years, and he still has a great skill set. And the fact that he got to the Super Bowl with such a young receiving core last year kind of puts a stamp on just how good that guy is. If Garcon and Collie improve from last year, then Manning is primed to put up some big numbers again.

Songs like Collie Man by Slightly Stoopid?

Ive listened to allot of their songs, but none of them hit me as much as Collie Man. But i need more songs…
i know this question was asked 3 years ago, but the answer given to it only suggested two bands, both of which are similar to the bands usual songs… but neither does anything similar to Collie Man.
The vocals and simple melody are what haunts my mind constantly when not hearing the song and i think i might have played it about 50 million times by now on my ipod. šŸ˜›

Collie man is a great song, but they have other great songs too. Closer to the sun is my favorite. Also listen to open road, mellow mood, anywhere I go, I’m on fire, wiseman (acoustic roots version), no cocaine, hiphoppablues. These are probably my favorites, but they have probably 40 songs I love

Your Questions About Dog’s Life Ending

Thomas asksā€¦

What’s the worst that can happen if I leave aural hematoma untreated?

What can happen if I leave my dog’s aural hematoma alone?
So if I leave it untreated, she will have a cauliflower ear, and nothing worse?

The problem is that I can’t take her to the vet and get help. She looks like she’s suffering, and it pains me to see it.

admin answers:

Hematoma’s need to be seen by a vet. They generally need to be lanced & drained, but your vet is the only one who can tell you what it needs based on his exam.

The end result of the potential cauliflower ear isn’t really the important part of the equation with this. Like the other poster replied, it is quite painful. If you broke your ankle, the end result would be that you’d have a limp for the rest of your life. Doesn’t sound so bad if you just look at what it would eventually do to you…but it leaves out the fact that you’d be going thru some excrutiating pain until it healed on its own. Your dog’s hematoma is no different. It is painful and needs to be looked at.

In this recession, it is hard to find the extra money sometimes to do anything other than pay for absolute necessities in life. But you’ve taken on the responsibility to be his caretaker and that includes taking care of health problems when they arise. Borrow the money, barter services with someone for it, ask your local shelter if they have a low-cost clinic, apply for care-credit thru the vet, ask if they’ll break the payments up, do whatever it takes to find the money to bring him in.

No matter that in the end it may just be disfigurement…it is the here and now of ending his pain that is the important part.

Donna asksā€¦

When do kids develop intellect and emotions?

I was babysitting my 9 year old neighbor today, and we were watching Marley And Me. When I saw it in theatres I remember, everyone crying, boys and girls. Well when it ended he stared at me and said “That was weird, why did they make a movie about a dog’s life?”, I just stared at him and replied “Idk, why don’t you go get your $200 Abercrombie jacket and go outside and play.

admin answers:

They don’t develop them, they are taught them. Kids need to be taught ethics, morals, and manners or they run the risk of growing up to be very bad people.

Jenny asksā€¦

Who here believes the Federal Government has the right to prosecute Michael Vicks dog fighting practices?

Personally, I think the Federal Government, and all government for that matter, has no right to stick their noses into dog fighting. Those dogs, pitbulls, LOVE TO FIGHT. They are FIGHTERS by nature. it is their NATURAL instinct to FIGHT. When one pitbull sees another, it attacks. it’s that simple.

So why would the federal govt or any government have anything to say about something that is, in ACTUAL REALITY, NATURAL? And what is it with all the people who think dog’s that are born to fight to the death (that is their purpose in life, by instinct) are more important than the Iraqi women, children and of course the less valuable of all, men are being slaughtered for the benefit of the Federal Reserve? Why is it that people care about these stupid killer dogs and let people be murdered for years on end?

I don’t get it.

I can’t wait to hear some of the intelligent remarks that will discount human life and make the life of a DOG more important. Remember, Bush TORTURES people.
Pitbulls are FIGHTERS.
Personally, I despise fighting of any kind.

admin answers:

No this should be a state crime.

Your Questions About Rough Collie Temperament

William asksā€¦

what type of dog would you rather get for a puppy?

what would you choose
collie
lab
dalmation
daushand?
so which do you choose?

admin answers:

Smooth collies…great collie temperament….less hair to groom!

I love smooth collies the best, and then a close second would be rough collies. I have grown up around collies. My uncle introduced me to collies, he was a collie breeder and competed in conformation and obedience with his collies. And then my sister became involved in breeding and showing collies.

I know the breed very well, and always planned on having collies of my own some day. Finally, the time was right and we got our first smooth about 3 and 1/2 years ago. (Then our second collie a year ago.) The collie is a very versatile breed. They can be shown in conformation. They compete successfully in obedience, Rally and agility. They also excel in herding, and are still doing the job they were bred to do hundreds of years ago. And finally, they make a loving, loyal family pet. They thrive in both the city or the country as long as they are allowed to live inside as a member of the family and get plenty of exercise.

The collie isn’t for everyone. They tend to be a more vocal breed, which can drive some people crazy. They also try to herd children, joggers, bicycles, cars, etc. So a fenced yard is a must for collie owners. But I love the breed, I think they are beautiful inside and out.

Michael asksā€¦

What should I expect for a mixed puppy of these breeds to turn out as; as an adult?

A puppy I’m considering adopting has a background like this:

1/4 rottweiler
1/4 border collie or lab (owner doesn’t know)
1/4 american bulldog
1/4 pit bull

What would the temperament be like?

admin answers:

My wife and I adopted a wonderful rottweiler/boxer/bl. Lab/pit bull puppy.
He is very HYPER at times, but also very submissive, and cuddly the rest of the time. And EXTREMELY smart! I would suggest (with any puppy) picking them up, and flipping them onto their backs in your arms. If they squirm and wiggle to get out, there may be dominance issues down the road. If they lay there calm and cuddle, they should make a great dog, and not be very agressive adults.

Also, you need to raise them properly by reinforcing commands, get them used to humans, and patiently work with them so they don’t jump on, chew on, or get too rough with people…especially kids.

Chip is GREAT with our nephews because WE reinforced not to bite or jump. There are a TON of websited to help with training your puppy to be the best dog it can be!

One note about my personal experience with rottweilers, or rotty mixes, is that they can get abnormally anxious if they can’t get into a room that you are in (Chip is no exeption to that). Your puppy may or may not experience this, but i have had rottweilers tthat you HAD to leave, say, the bathroom door craked a little, or the garage door cracked…just so they could pop their heads in and make sure everything was ok, and then run off to play elsewhere. It is a bit uncomfortable at times, but no big deal to keep them from freaking out (one rotty male actually broke the door off the frame to the bathroom just so he could come in and lay at my feet! :S)

I hope this helps…good luck!

Jenny asksā€¦

Wolf dog hybrid temperaments toward other animals?

How do wolf dog hybrids interact with other animals? Such as cats or smaller dogs? I’d prefer if people who own or raise these animals because I am planning on getting one but my girlfriend wants a cat or tea cup yorkie. Please help me with this

admin answers:

DON”T GET A WOLF-HYBRID. I cannot stress this enough. They are much more dangerous than wolves, because their temperament is too unstable. They are not at all like domestic dogs either. Its essentially like having a wild animal in your home, only one with confused instincts. Anyone who tells you they make great pets is lying. Make no mistake, even the best trained wolf-hybrid will still kill you if you do the wrong thing or set off the wrong trigger.

In terms of their interactions with non-canine animals, they kill them. They’re predatory instincts are too strong to be trained out. They will immediately kill cats, birds, rabbits, and anything they see. Small dogs are no different. I would say that no dog under 60 pounds is safe anywhere near a wolf-hybrid. In all honesty, large dogs are no safer. Wolves have a natural urge to kill dogs as competitors, and many wolf-hybrids seem to as well. There are almost no domestic dogs that could withstand a wolf-hybrid attack either, not even a Pit Bull.

Let me put it too you this way. I love big, strong-willed working dogs. I completely trust Pit Bulls, Mastiffs, American Bulldogs, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Akitas, Dobermans, etc. I let them sleep in my bed with me, play with children, etc. I would never, ever trust a wolf-hybrid not to kill me or a family member.

Even if you think you could control one (which you cannot) your girlfriend could not. You would be putting her life in serious danger.

That being said, there’s no reason why you have to get a Yorkie (a breed I personally cannot stand). Reach a compromise position. If you like wolf-like dogs, consider a Shiba Inu, Samoyed, Siberian Husky, or American Eskimo Dog. You may also want to seriously consider a Rough or Smooth Collie, which are many times as trainable as those other breeds.

Your Questions About Collie

Ken asksā€¦

How can I get my border collie to stop niping me?

My fiance and I have a 6 month old border collie. He nips us, Not hard but he still nips us. Also when he is in puppy play groups he nips other dogs on the behind. How can I stop this behavior?

admin answers:

When he nips, yelp like a puppy would, stand up, turn your back, and cross your arms. All play ends for at least 30 seconds and until he is calm and quiet. He’ll soon learn that nipping is no fun at all. If this is a herding behavior sort of nipping, he may need more physical exercise and/or a ‘job’ to do. Many areas have farms now where dogs can go to learn herding and use that instinct so they don’t use it on you. Agility, flyball, and other dog sports are also good choices for a border collie. They are very intelligent and enjoy having activities. Nipping other dogs in play is normal, if the other puppies mind, they will let him know, you should not need to intervene unless one of the dogs is uncomfortable with the intensity of the play.

Mandy asksā€¦

How Will a border collie work for my family?

We found a shelter dog who is a lab and border collie mix and I did research on border collies and I know that are extremely smart and need a job to do. We are fine with exercising the dog in the dog in the morning and afternoon and giving her a job once in a while but the problem is she would be home alone for 6 hours 5 days a week. My dad says he is willing to come home from work at noon to walk the dog and take her to the bathroom. I heard that leaving on the radio or tv and giving the dog a special treat right before we leave will distract her and keep her busy. Would she be destructive or bored? We also have cats. Will she try to heard them? The dog we want is a bit timid so probably won’t scare the cats as much as a hyper dog. Remember she isn’t a pure bread border collie she is also a lab.

admin answers:

Well, if you have her working in the day, you could use the hours alone as a nap after her job. Just keep her busy before the separation starts.

Also, keep in mind she is part Lab and not a purebred working line Border Collie. Most likely she is mixed with a pet quality Border Collie, which isn’t as intense as a pure working line… Maybe the Border Collie parent was a mutt itself.

^ She probably will not see the cats as prey, but incase she does… Correct it right when it starts.

Carol asksā€¦

How much attention and/or activities a day does a Border Collie need?

I might be getting a border collie, but I would like a better understanding of how much play time and activities they require to stay happy each day.

Thanks!

admin answers:

Physical exercise alone is not sufficient for this very intelligent and highly energetic dog. They want to work and must do so with body and mind as one, carrying out different tasks. Fast and agile, these lively little dogs have boundless energy and thrive on hard work and play. They are a delight to see streaking after a ball or bringing straying sheep back to the fold.

A Border Collie is a herding dog. These dogs need vigorous excercise. I recommend 3-4 walks a day, one hour each. Plus additional play time with a Frisbee and tennis ball. I might also recommend buy a backpack if you get this dog, put it on him while walking. This makes the dog feel like he has a job, you might also consider doing agility. If you are lazy (no offense) and don’t like to get up and do things physical, look else were for a dog.

Your Questions About Dog’s Life Vest

Linda asksā€¦

How can i keep my black lab cool in the summer?

He lives outdoors and never wants to stop playing

admin answers:

Great question! Black dogs have trouble getting rid of the heat, especially since they usually love the sun!

Ensure your dog has a shady area to get out of the sun at all times of the day. Perhaps putting up a awning or tent, or plant a tree for this. Dog houses sitting directly in the sun get hot.

Providing a shallow kiddie pool (with toys) usually helps as his feet are what gets wet and this helps to keep him cool. Blood circulation to the feet helps cool him.

Also on really hot days or after exercise, I also wet down my dog’s head (to keep her brain cool), back (just for gneral evaporationa nd cooling) and the insides of her legs where the big arteries are.

I also give her ice cubes to play with/eat. I do this supervised as they can choke on them.

There are also lightweight blanket vests that hold water well that you can purchase to put on her. (Think of that TV commercial where the cloth holds up to 4 times its own weight-Shamwow! Type) As the water evaporates, it helps to cool her. Check out agility trials and websites for these. They were very popular in my city a few years ago. I am trying to get one for Jessie as her heat tolerance is very low.

Regular grooming helps to get rid of the undercoat that holds heat in. I use the “furminator” and its amazing how much comes out even rom a short-haired dog.

Daniel asksā€¦

what size category does my dog fall into?

american eskimo dog i need to buy him a life vet and i need to know weather he is small or x small. i know he is a small dog i just don’t know what size to buy him (shopping online) otherwise i’d just go 2 the store and have him fitted >.<
also what size shoes do i buy him!?!?
Life Vest****
he cant swim!! and the floor is really hot last year his paws burnt =[ otherwise i’d never dress me dog -.-

admin answers:

Gaby…believe it or not, American Eskimos (Spitzes) come in three sizes:

Standard: 15″ to 19″ tall & 18 to 35 lbs.
Miniature: 12″ to 15″ tall & 10 to 20 lbs.
Toy: 9″ to 12″ tall & 6 to 10 lbs.

Normally for vest measurements you would need to measure the diameter of his chest at its deepest point (usually measured just behind his front legs and all the way around), his neck (as you would for a collar), and length (from his neck to the base of his tail).

Those measurements will dictate if he is an X-Small, a Small, or a Medium. (I can’t imagine a Spitz would run into either an XX-Small or a Large).

Once you have those numbers, you should be able to determine the appropriate size of vest to order for him.

Related to booties, typically (not always but usually) a dog’s paw size will run one size smaller than his clothing size…so if you determine that the right size of sweater or vest for your dog is a size Small, his booties will likely be an X-Small size. However, you should measure for it to be sure. Different manufacturers of booties measure differently. The safest thing to do is to get both a paw width AND a paw length measurement. Paw width is from side to side when weight is put on the paw, paw length is from toenail to end of pad. Those figures will then help you to determine the appropriate size of boot for your dog from the manufacturer of the product itself.

An example is: My Papillon is 7 pounds even. He’s 14″ from neck to base of his tail, 14″ girth at chest, and about 8″ around his neck. Depending on the brand I will often buy him X-Small clothing…however, if they run quite small I have opted to go with a size Small at times. He’s kind of at the very in-between range of X-Small and Small. His booties are X-Small.

I also have a Chihuahua…4.8 pounds. Her length is at 11″, her chest is at 11″, and her neck is slightly less than 7″. She gets an X-Small in her clothing. I have not yet tried to fit her for booties yet, but based on her paws she would likely need an XX-Small bootie.

Hope that helps.

Your Questions About Rough Collie Breeders Texas

Susan asksā€¦

Chosen a Rough Collie, but still a few questions,…?

I have chosen to get a rough Collie, but I would Like to know some more about them (Like their personality from the owners view.)
Their Life span, height, etc. (Google does not solve everything.)
Also, where are some GOOD breeders in Texas?
Also, how much exerciser do they need?

admin answers:

It really depends on the dog. My collie is usually very relaxed. They are not exactly “cuddly” but they love to be around you ALL the time. They are also whiners X) Sweet dogs, my collie is pushed around by a two and three year old and doesn’t even care. They are super sensitive to how their owners fell which I like, some may not enjoy such an attentive dog. Excercise wise it isn’t too much. My dog is laid back and only needs a walk a day usually less because I’m busy. The only demanding thing about collies is the cost of groom, which you will definitely want to get done professionally. šŸ™‚ Good luck!

Mandy asksā€¦

Does anyone know of a reputable rough collie breeder in Texas?

Looking for a rough collie breeder in Texas; the closer to Houston the better, but it really doesn’t make too much difference. I expect to pay around 400 with first shots included.

If anyone has had a positive experience with a breeder in TX, please let me know. I’ve searched everywhere.

Looking at getting the puppy around May, so future litters would be preferred.

********** Yes, I have looked at rescuing one; however, I believe a puppy would be more suited to my tastes. I am constantly checking the Houston, Austin, and Dallas Collie rescue pages for puppies, but I don’t want one older than six months or so. ****************

admin answers:

Dogs from responsible breeders will be $750-$2000 for a pet.

$400 will get you a rescue dog or a badly bred unhealthy puppy. If you are looking for puppies around May then you need to start saving that extra potential $1000 and enough for a several thousand dollar cushion for emergencies.

There was just a show in Rosenberg two weekends ago – it would have been a GREAT place to meet good breeders.

HONEYTREE is in Liberty Hill outside of Austin http://www.honeytreecollies.com/
Desert Wind is just North of Houston http://desertwindcollies.tripod.com/
http://younghaven.homestead.com/ is in Crosby

There’s a show March 19-21 in Houston. It would be the BEST place to meet dogs and breeders. Http://www.onofrio.com/jodstwo/clubs/ABCbystate/states/abcTX/hous.html

Added: In looking at your past questions, you may have a rough time finding a good breeder or rescue group that will allow you to have one of their dogs. You are in school and I didn’t see you planning for what’s going to happen once you are in the workforce.
You are in school and unless you have a trust fund, you’ll have a hard time convincing someone that you have the cash for emergency vet bills, training, and proper upkeep.
You live in an apartment – herding dogs tend to be super vocal.
You live in an apartment – Without a yard, how are you planning on WORKING a super active herding breed for several hours a day?

Perhaps saving the money and waiting until you are out of school would be the best option? Unless you have come up with a gameplan. . .

Either way, GL!

Your Questions About Dog’s Life Cycle

Helen asksā€¦

Is the milk from the estrus cycle of a dog bad for a kitten?

My 3 year old dog has been nursing my 3 month old kitten. Although I do not mind that he is being comforted by her in the nursing process, she is in the estrus cycle and is producing milk. Is this milk ok for a kitten? Are there any properties in her milk that are bad for the kitten?

admin answers:

I don’t think there’s anything bad for the kitten, except that dog’s milk is formulated for dogs. Cats have some very starkly different nutritional needs, like their dependency on taurine in their diet in order to, you know, not die.

If your kitten is getting a sizely amount of its nutrition from the dog, then I’d intervene. The cat needs to eat food with his own dietary requirements taken into account.

Cats are obligate carnivores–this means they REQUIRE taurine from the flesh of other animals in order to survive. Taurine cannot be adequately recieved from plant life, and is destroyed during the cooking process. This is why dry cat food has added taurine. Dogs, on the other hand, are carnivores, but not obligate carnivores. That is, they do not require taurine in their diet to survive. This is why they thrive as scavengers, and can safely be fed a vegan diet if some hipster douchebag wants to shove their own lifestyle onto their carnivore pet.

The kitten needs to eat cat food or another source of taurine, not to mention his other dietary needs. This is why dogs can eat cat food and do just fine, but cats cannot be fed a steady diet of dog food, which has no added taurine, without going blind, suffering a host of health problems including seizures, and eventually dying. The only obligate carnivore I know of that survived on a taurine-free diet was an african lioness, a complete, utter fluke of nature.

How long is the menstrual cycle for a Chihuahua, and how often do they go into heat?

Mine is in heat now and this is the ONE thing I DIDN’T think about b4 actually getting her! YELLLK! I am TOOO grossed out! TELL ME how long this will go on and how soon after can I go to get her spayed??? I love her, but geez, do they make Kotex for dogs??? YELK!

admin answers:

HAHAHAHA! YEEEEP! You have to give thought to THAT part of a female dog’s life especially! LOL!

She, unless you have her spayed, will go into heat 2 times a year. With my Chihuaha, I’ve noticed that she only bleeds for the first week, and then the days after the vaginal area is still swollen (she is STILL in heat, so I have to keep a CLOSE watch on her) but no blood is evident. I’m not sure if this is with all dogs, but with my pooch, this is how it works. Every male dog in my apartment complex was on the prowl searchin’ for her! LOL! One escaped through the bedroom window the other day and he sniffed her out allllllll the way upstairs to our door and was barking as if to say, “Come out and play!” LOL! It was so funny! Anywho, I hope all goes well with you and your pooch!

Paul asksā€¦

How do I know when it’s the right time to breed a shih tzu?

My 1 year old Shih Tzu is in the heat cycle right now. She’s bleeding a lot and my parents and I want to breed her. When is it a good time to mate my dog in the process of the cycle? She started about January 19 or 20, 2011.
My mom has had a dog and bred it at 1 year when she was little. And don’t tell me I don’t know what I’m doing cuz that’s not the question.

admin answers:

Get her spayed. You have no idea what you are doing and will be putting your dog’s life at risk. If you were qualified to breed you would already know that she’s too young and would be talking to your breeding mentor instead of strangers online.

Your Questions About Rough Collie Breeders

George asksā€¦

How can I make my partner see he is wrong??!?

Me and my partner have two children, a two year old and a three year old. We have just bought and done up a large house with a big garden and are moving in after Christmas, the year after I’m planning on getting a puppy. I’ve had dogs all my life, my partner knows nothing about dogs or caring for them.

I had decided on a rough collie as everything about the breed is perfect for my family. I have researched them for the past few months, spent months finding good breeders speaking to different breeders and spoke to one about putting my name on the waiting list at the end of next year. My partner saw an Akita in the pub and now is saying he wants one, completely ignoring me while I’m saying an Akita would NOT be the right dog for us at all….he says a rough collie is too “girly” and he wants an Akita or a husky.

We have been arguing a lot about this, I’ve told him why they wouldn’t be suitable but he just keeps saying I think I know everything when I don’t and the Akita at the pub and the husky that’s chained up outside the garage all day are fine. He really doesn’t have a clue, hasn’t researched them and won’t listen to me when I try and explain….he wants a dog that looks good, but then I’m going to be looking after it because I know 100% he has no idea what goes into looking after a dog, especially a very dominant breed like an Akita, or the husky, I couldn’t have chose worse dogs for my family than these two breeds!! How can I make him see that personality and character is more important, and that I have spent months choosing the right breed and then breeder for us then he just sees a dog in the pub and decides he wants one with no idea what they are like. I just recently had to rehome my lurcher because of extreme dog aggression after having months of training with dog trainers and I do not want another difficult dog or a breed that will be aggressive/very hyper/destructive/stubborn/difficult to train/can’t let of leash/not trust worthy around strangers and children and the dogs he’s chosen have all the qualitys that I’m trying to stay away from….this is causing trouble with us and I just want him to understand you don’t pick a dog because you like what it looks like, what do I do?
My oldest will be five and the youngest will be four when I am planning the get the dog. My partner bought me my lurcher for my birthday as a suprise, not the right breed I had her for two years I house trained her when I had a three month old and a one year old, and it was fine when i lived on a farm, not when I moved into my mums(while we are doing our house up) she started attacking her dogs, causing two emergency vet trips, i tried for the whole year we have been living here. but i had to know when enough was enough. Even though I had made effort to socialise her my trainer said it would be best to rehome her-so I found someone who is perfect for her and have kept in touch. I didn’t just give her up for no reason.
My children would never “make the puppy’s life a misery” not all children are rough and cruel to animals you know…..they never hurt my lurcher once when she was a pup, and because they grew up with her from a young age, they now know exactly how to treat dogs and animals. The help me wash and brush the dogs, feed them and exercise them. never pull hair or ears and know how to behave around dogs. I am looking after my mums dalamation and lurcher while I’m living here and am managing fine with two very high energy breeds we are an active family and like to keep busy and any dog we get will have more than enough Exercise and attention. I’ve had dogs since I was young and I intend my children to have the same experience.

admin answers:

Your partner’s not wrong as such, just misguided when it comes to thinking about your ability to manage a growing family plus a high-maintenance dog. Any puppy is going to be high-maintenance anyway but when you get a wilful breed it’s like having a massive puppy around for years and years.

Rough Collies are nice but certainly not ‘girly’. They’re second only in stunning coat handsomeness to Borzois. I’ve had two of the latter and they were not dogs that ever tended to ‘listen’.

So any dog you get must have an excellent temperament in its breeding and you should be prepared to pay more for this with a top breeder.

Whilst it might be super-senisble to wait until your kids get older, that would deny them the joy of growing up with a dog. I’m certain children from dog owning families end up better equipped to cope with life’s problems.

Sharon asksā€¦

Are all breeders who raise their dogs in kennel runs bad?

The breeder shows his dogs and has quite a few (at least 8) and has children. He occasionally has advertisements for puppies. The dogs are rough collies.
yes he does let us look and has all the pedigrees of the parents, and the dogs have access to clean water
the kennels don’t smell (well maybe a little bit of doggie odor)
and the puppies are in puppy runs, not in the house
and the vets in queensland don’t seem to want to recommend any breeders

admin answers:

No.

However, good breeders don’t allow the b*tch to whelp in the kennel or raise the pups in the kennel. Whelping and early puppyhood should take place in the home. Not only is this far less stressful and safer for the dam and the pups, it’s important that the puppies become used to lots of human handling, household noises, etc., before they go home. Miss that critical socialization period and you’re setting the pups up for a lifetime of behavior and temperament issues.

My mom has kennel runs, too, but that’s not where girls in heat or pregnant b*tches or puppies go! They’re in the house! (And even the dogs in the kennels don’t live there all the time or spend all their time in there when they do. That’s why we have a fenced acre of property-the dogs in the kennel for that time get to play and be trained and just be dogs romping in the yard or going on excursion with us or to shows. )

She built a special whelping room right off our kitchen for whelping and litters. The pups get handled frequently and hear all the household noises because they’re right there with the family!

Carol asksā€¦

Can I bring a Ragdoll cat from USA to Brazil? Can you tell about the American laws about animal transportation?

In Brazil it is very hard to find the breed Ragdoll. When you find it is too expensive because it is rare. When I visit US someday can I bring one with me? Do I need to pay some rates? How much would it be? Can I adopt one? Or do you get it from breeders? I need a cat that gets along well with kind dogs. I would love to adopt a cat in my country and it can hurt my kind Rough Collie.

admin answers:

Of course you can “import” animals, as long as they are pets like cats and dogs.
The first part is consular approval, health certificates ,etc. It is more about Brazilian regulations (not US regulations) you must be concerned about. From this site: http://www.gringoes.com/articles.asp?ID_Noticia=1111 (but also see http://gobrazil.about.com/od/bringingapettobrazil/ss/brazilpettravel.htm)
“First, you need an international travel certificate from the local veterinarian. And in order to get that you need to take the animal for an exam, and you must have proof of a rabies vaccination within a certain time frame. It must not be too old; but the surprise is that it cannot be too recent, either (30 days before the flight may be just too late). You may then need a local government certificate that says that there are not any epidemics in your area. In my case, I had to go to the United States Department of Agriculture in my city (Tempe, Arizona, with population of about 200,000) to obtain the certificate. I arrived at my appointed time, showed them the international travel certificate, they charged me a small fee, and then they put their official stamp on the travel certificate. They, like the airlines, had their own research on Brazilā€˜s requirements, which added to my stock of understanding and confidence.

The Brazilian consulate must approve of the cats entering Brazil before your flight. There are specific time rules about when the proper document can be obtained, and it must be within a very short time of the flight. This can cause a great deal of anxiety about whether you will get the approval in time. The rule of thumb is that if you are well prepared and send your documents within the time guidelines given that the Brazilian consulate in your area will then respond in time for your flight, even if the time window is short by that time (this guideline goes for visas for people, too). The consulate requires that you have documents from your country authenticated by the consulate. (In the USA, they sometimes require a notary and then authentication of the notary at the Secretary of State, and then finally authentication at the consulate.) It is better for you if you live close enough to go to the consulate personally, or if your visa courier company has no problem getting the pet acceptance along with your visa. The ideal situation is that you find that Brazil has an honorary consulate in your area. This is somebody who works part-time for the Brazilian government, who can authenticate some minor Brazilian documents. My city, Phoenix, has just such an honorary Brazilian consulate. I made an appointment with him, we chatted about my connections to Brazil, and he authenticated the pet travel papers and gave the official government stamp of approval, just days before the flight.”
Please also be aware that at the airport in Brazil you cannot go to the “Nothing to declare” line. You have to go through inspection.

The second part you need to check with the airliner what the policies are for transporting pets.
I moved my cat from the US to Canada and back to the US and American Airlines let me have a small cat in the cabin provided that I had him in a carrier (a soft carrier like a Sherpa Bag). Http://www.sherpapet.com/. Other airlines will only allow you to have the pet transported in the luggage compartment – in that case you may a sturdy hard carrier.

The third part is to make the trip comfortable for your pet. You may want to have it lightly sedated by a vet before the trip after all it is a long trip.

what is your opinion of Jeremiah Weed hard lemonade?

i got a 6 pack for cheap, i thought it was stronger than mike’s hard. i dont drink fruity drinks that often but i think they are refreshing like gatorade. is jeremiah weed a guy’s version of mikes hard lemonade?

admin answers:

It’s garbage, and worse – copycat garbage!

Look, there are some really amazing, hand made spirits out there. Tito’s vodka out in Austin, Texas for example. Here is a guy making a premium vodka in the USA. Not Russia, Not Poland. He financed the operation by maxing out his credit cards. Now he can’t fill orders fast enough, and his vodka has won numerous international awards.

Then there’s Collier and McKeel down in Tennessee, making a Tennessee whiskey in a traditional hand-hammered pot still. After distillation they run it through a column of charred sugar maple before going into charred oak barrels where it will rest, taking on color and flavor for years before it is ready to drink.

These are just 2 examples of people working hard at a craft, making a super premium spirit for true fans of drinking.

Contrast that with something like JW or MH; they’re almost all “malt based” which is an industry term for cheap. They use some barley malt and all manner of adjuncts and sugar to make a base alcohol, and then they add preservatives, artificial colors, flavors and processed garbage.

And then there’s the whole issue of drinking with an adult palate. It takes a little effort and maturity to appreciate whiskey. Drinking Mike’s Hard Whatever is like drinking Kool Aid.

It is the alcoholic equivalent to a Happy Meal.

You want to try the best “Hard Lemonade” you’ve ever had? Make yourself up a batch of Vodka Collins. Heck, use Tito’s vodka!. The recipe is simple; vodka, simple syrup, lemon juice and soda water.

Bill From the 1930s to the 1960s, William Powell Lear earned over 100 patents for groundbreaking electronic devices in three industries, including the first practical automobile radio, the airplane radio-compass and autopilot, and the eight-track tape player.

Born in Hannibal, Missouri in 1902, Lear attended public school in Chicago only through the eighth grade. During World War I, at age 16, he joined the Navy; after the War, he became a pilot. Here, Lear received the training that fueled a lifetime of invention in electronic technology.

At the age of 20, Lear founded Quincy Radio Laboratory, the first of his many companies. In the late 1920s Lear was contracted by Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in Chicago to assist Galvin engineers with a car radio design project. Later, a car radio patent was issued to Lear (U.S. Patent 1,944,139). In 1930 Galvin Manufacturing introduced this car radio as the “Motorola.” It was one of the first commercially successful car radios, and the first major product for the company that later became Motorola, Inc. Paul V. Galvin created the Motorola brand from “motor” (motorcar) + “ola” (sound).

Meanwhile, Lear turned his attention to airplanes. By the beginning of the Second World War, he had invented the first reliable aeronautical radio compass, as well as the “Learmatic Navigator”ā€”an automatic pilot system, which kept planes on course by locking into whatever radio broadcasts the apparatus picked up.

During World War II, Lear’s companies were a major source of the technology that helped make an Allied victory possible. Lear followed up his War effort by perfecting miniature autopilots for fighter jets, and by developing the first fully automatic landing system. This latter invention won Lear the FAA’s Collier Trophy, bestowed on him by President Truman (1950). In 1962, after he made possible the first-ever completely automatic blind landings of passenger flights, Lear was also honored by the French Government. In the same year, Lear formed Learjet, which soon became — as it remains, under different ownership — the world’s foremost supplier of corporate jets.

But Lear moved on to yet another challenge: the perfection of an endless magnetic loop recording and playback system. As early as 1946, Lear had been interested in audio recordings; after experimenting more seriously in the early 1960s, he created the eight-track tape player. Lear’s tape contained four stereo “programs,” running in parallel on eight “tracks,” for the entire length of a single, continuous tape loop. A solenoid coil detected the splice where the loop was closed, and sent a signal to the playback head to shift over to the next pair of tracks at that point. Because Lear’s system had thinner tape and compact recording heads, this shifting process could be repeated indefinitely.

Lear’s system was a great improvement on the esoteric four-track players that already existed; it was also a huge marketing success. From 1965 well into the 1970s, Lear’s eight-track players made their way from Lear jets and Ford cars into the homes of virtually every music enthusiast.

Lear’s projects in the 1970s included further small-aircraft design, and the search for an antipollutant steam engine. Before and after his death in 1978, Lear earned many other honors, including induction into the International Aerospace Hall of Fame (1981). He also acquired a reputation as an eccentric, since he — like Samuel Clemens, another native of Hannibal, Missouri — vividly envisioned time-travel, and even predicted “teleporting” (cf. “beaming” in Star Trek).

Critics should realize that the vision that earned William Lear sneers is the same vision that helped him transform the automotive, aviation and audio industries. If global technology has not advanced as quickly as Lear thought it would, it was through no fault of his own.

Im starting to become extremely anti foreign aid am i wrong?

I used to be fairly supportive of most US aid but im so disillusioned to how much or a waste it is helping people that i hate foreign aid from Haiti to Asia to Africa , i say let them die and you?

admin answers:

I do think you’re wrong. It is late and I am tired so I’m not going to write as much as could be said. I think that you should read up on the issue to clear up any misunderstandings.

Here’s some suggestions:

Peter Singer’s The Life You Can Save – a book arguing that there is a moral obligation to contribute money to aid organizations
Dambisa Moyo’s Dead Aid – very critical of foreign aid so far and makes some really good points
William Easterly’s The White Man’s Burden – Another economist critical of aid, but he argues that aid should be reformed, not abandoned
Paul Collier’s The Bottom Billion – An economist who argues that aid, along with other tools, is necessary for helping to lift countries out of poverty
Jeffrey Sach’s The End of Poverty – A book from a pro-aid economist
Millions Saved – I haven’t read this one yet, but I do know it is about the successes in saving millions of lives in developing countries; definitely something worth considering, since critics like Moyo tend only to look at economic numbers, and saving the lives of poor children doesn’t always show up there.

I am wrapping up my MA right now, and its focus is ethics and international development. Arguably foreign aid is the biggest ethical issue in the field. I’m not expecting you to take anything on my authority, though.

I would say the following to you:

1) you probably have a misconception at how much aid gets wasted; polls done of Americans on this issue indicate that Americans regularly think that over half of the aid money gets wasted. There is no data to support waste figures that high that I know of. Americans also tend to think that far more of the federal budget gets spent on aid than actually is. Non-military foreign aid accounts for less than 1% of the federal budget. In 2001, each taxpaying household paid a little less than $30 a year in taxes for all foreign aid, including military.

2) If you are concerned about problems with official foreign aid, make donations through respected NGOs or aid organizations like Oxfam and UNICEF. Far too many people use the shortcomings of official foreign aid by the US government to do nothing, when with a little bit of research they could be donating money with a reasonably high degree of certainty it isn’t being wasted.

3) Don’t become anti foreign aid, support measures to reform it and make it more accountable and responsive. Doing away with foreign aid is a drastic step, and one not at all warranted by its present shortcomings.

4) Even if 50% of aid is wasted by the recipient governments, is that really a good reason to let people die? If, without waste, it costs about $200 to save a child’s life, but with waste it costs $400, is the logical solution really to cut off the aid?

5) Keep in mind that foreign aid often is not simply charity. There are many ways in which wealthy countries harm poorer countries. Agricultural subsidies are a common example; cotton subsidies in the US, for example, are known to cost cotton farmers in West Africa millions of dollars by depressing global cotton prices. The poorest countries also have done the least to contribute to global warming, but many, especially in Africa, are projected to pay the highest costs. Many rich nations, notably France and the US, have a history of supporting corrupt dictators who keep us plied with cheap resources.

My own personal view is that there are problems with bilateral foreign aid; the kind that USAID does. Aid has been used too often to prop up friendly corrupt dictators, it has been thrown away at projects which were insufficiently researched and which lacked feedback mechanisms or failed to get the perspective of the people who it was intended to benefit. It gets used to benefit American business without any thought as to efficiency. I suspect that NGO’s do better work because they don’t have all the political considerations that a government does. So I can understand being skeptical of the government, but I don’t think it is a reason to do away with all aid.

Your Questions About Dog’s Life Rescue

George asksā€¦

How do you deal with the grief of putting a dog down?

Being the co-director of a rescue, it’s up to me and my partner to make the decision to take a dog into the rescue or not. One of our dogs that we had taken in, we were really attached to. He was older. He was adopted and was doing great with his family. The oldest son of the family, 10, was petting him, accidentally touched the dog’s infected ear, and the dog turned around and snapped at him, catching a hold of the kid’s face. Becuase of the dog bite, and a rabies scare that’s going on here, Animal Control was called and demanded that the dog be put to sleep. (Please don’t go on about dog breeds and vicious dogs, the dog was a lab). We were able to work it out to have our vet do it instead of Animal Control, that way, the family can be there to say good bye. I’ve never had to deal with this before. I was wondering, for those of you who have, how did you deal with it?

admin answers:

Heartbreaking, isn’t it? I’ve lost eight dogs in my adult life – and they have all been difficult deaths, whether they were put to sleep or died of another reason.

You exhibited compassion for the animal and his family, which is the best thing you could have done. Giving your best is all anyone can ask for, and sometimes it’s the hardest thing to do.

As with losing anyone you love, time is the key to healing. There is a Website that I have found that helps – at least you know you’re not alone in your grief.

I wish you the best – the work you do is angelic.

Michael asksā€¦

What are the pros and cons of adopting an adult dog?

The kids (ages 7-11) have been lobbying for a dog. We don’t want to deal with the puppy stage. I know there’s a nearby rescue organization that has the dog’s history, unlike shelter dogs. Besides the breed and age, what should I consider when thinking about adopting an adult dog? Thanks

admin answers:

I have adopted adult dogs and bought pedigree pups. The one way I can be sure of getting the dog I want (if they are adults) is looking at the breed. For example, if I want a dog that is good with children then I go for a golden retriever, labrador, pointer. If I want a dog that does not need a lot of walking but enjoys being fussed then the greyhound is the one for you. Dogs that are difficult to train (but worth it in the end) are the Springer spaniels.

Try not to go for a cross breed unless they know the history of the dog. We had a cross cocker spaniel and poodle (who lived for 16 years) he was great with children but he could be unpredictable with adults – one minute loving then next minute growling.

Find out the background to the dog. Why is it in the rescue? Has it been with children before? Does it like other dogs/animals? Has it been trained (is it clean)? What is the vets history – does it have any problems e.g. Skin allergies. What food has he/she been eating – what is the dogs stools like? Many labradors and retrievers have gluton allergies and need to eat gluton free complete such as Pero or James Well beloved.

When you find the dog you like, ask the rescue if you can visit it initially and take it for walks. Take the children with you see you the dog reacts to being in their presence. If this works well, then ask if you can take the dog home for a day (most rescues will be only to glad to help as they want to make sure the dog is going to a home for life). See how he/she reacts in your home.

Everything fine, then go for it. Expect a few mishaps in the beginning e.g. Soiling and whining on a night. Make sure you have a good soft bed for the dog, good quality complete dog food, dog toys and a decent size garden (enclosed).

Please take into account that 1. A dog is for life and should be part of the family. 2. Dogs need regular exercise – minimum 2 x 30 minute walks per day. 3. Need to be trained -basic commands such as sit, lie down, leave, wait, heel. 4. Regular meal times. 5. Not used as a play thing – need to have somewhere to go away from the children (make his or her bed children free). 6. Not allowed on furniture (otherwise they think they are the boss and it makes it more difficult to train). 7. Given lots of love.

In return for all this, you will have a loyal and loving friend who will bring you lots of joy in the future.

Mary asksā€¦

What’s your dog’s name, and what is so special about him/her?

This is my dog’s description…

Name: Sparky

Breed: Shih-Tzu

Specialty: My dog Sparky is special to me because he is happy even during the toughest days.

What about your dog?

admin answers:

I have 6 dogs

1.
Name: Domino
Breed: Mutt ( APBT x Staffy)
Specialty: In the air acrobatics, agility and frisbee.

He is special to me because without him I would probably die, literally. He is a trained medical alert dog. He is still learning but he has already alerted me about 6 times and saved my life.

2.
Name:Bella
Breed: Mutt (American Bulldog x Pit Bull)
Specialty: Tug of war.

She is special to me because she was there through a tough break up. She was my ex’s dog but when he left me he left her to. She dealt with a lot of separation anxiety and because I was so busy working with her I didn’t feel so much sadness

3.
Name: Baby Blue or Blue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
Specialty: Water Sports, .

She is special to me because when I got her I wasn’t looking for a dog. I was fostering her for a while and then our bond grew. Now I could not imagine life without her

4.
Name: Abby
Breed: Boston Terrier
Specialty: Being tiny but mighty

She is special to me because out of all my dogs she is the funniest. She snorts, farts and she is downright gross. She likes to lick my cheek for hours on end. I hated that but now I got used to it and when I am sad I look for her wet puppy kisses

5.
Name: Carmela
Breed: Jack Russell Terrier (now I am guessing mixed with Fox Terrier)
Specialty: Being a fighter/survivor

She is special to me because I like to know that I have finally gave her a forever home. She has been passed around in and out of rescues since she was 6mos old. Now at almost 3 she has a home with me.

6.
Name: Teddy
Breed: Shih Tzu
Specialty: Laziness/lethargy

She is special to me because she is the ultimate chill out companion. She doesn’t run fast and she gets hot quick so she just likes to lay down and hang out. I love that she makes my 2 sisters happy. She is really their dog.

Your Questions About Rough Collie Puppies

Betty asksā€¦

How do i introduce my border collie puppy to my cat?

My cat is 14 months old and has live in our house for about a year.
And we are getting a border collie puppy.
What is the best way to introduce them to eachother

admin answers:

Keep the puppy under control, and make sure the cat can get away from the puppy when it wants to. Supervise, don’t let either get too rough or start chasing the other. Never leave them alone together until they are used to each other.

Don’t expect the cat to take to the dog immediately usually it takes a few days or even weeks.

John asksā€¦

Why does our puppy walk around with a toy/bone and cry?

We have a young rough collie/blue merle mix puppy named Desi that has been doing something kind of weird. For some reason, for about the past month or so, he has been walking around with a bone or a toy in his mouth while whimpering. We’re not sure why he has been doing this. Does anyone know why? Or has anyone else had a dog do similar things?

admin answers:

I think it’s because he has nowhere to hid it..I bet if you let him out he will look for a spot to try and bury/hid it…mine hides it in a corner and tries covering it with air..lol..then she looks at me like ..did you see me? Lol..

George asksā€¦

How much should my 8 week old puppy weigh?

She is a female rough collie and came from a litter of 6. She is currently 5.8 kg, is this about right? Thanks, all answers very much appreciated.

admin answers:

The weight may or may not be right. Body condition is what is important. You should be feeding a puppy chow now. Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. Your Questions About Collie

John asksā€¦

How do you do you explain your dog is a collie, not a border collie?

Do you say, “standard collie” or the dreaded “lassie collie?” Or AKC collie? Just looking for the proper semantics..
Coop, my dogs are my children now that mine are grown.

admin answers:

The official name is “Collie” but it would not be improper when trying to explain to say “Rough Collie” or “Smooth Collie” as those are official varieties within the breed. Something like “She’s not a Border Collie, actually she’s a Rough Collie like Lassie was, but they do look a little similar, don’t they?”

That’s about my line when my Belgian Malinois gets the German Shepherd comments – “Actually he’s a Belgian Shepherd, but they do look a lot alike don’t they?”

Sometimes you just have to drop a soundbite and move on with life.

Jenny asksā€¦

How much would you spend on a border collie in a year?

well, i might be getting a border collie but im not sure how much im going to spend on him in a year?…and you know when people feed there dog 3 bowls of food and then they change and give them 2 bowls…when should i start giving my dog 2 bowls a day?

admin answers:

Don’t measure their food in bowls for one. The amount of food you give is determined by activity level, age and size (or weight).

My border collie is on the small side, but is VERY active (about 25 lb). She gets a little less than a cup of a high quality kibble daily. I separated into two feedings since that’s what I do with my German Shepherd. My Border is 12 months, so it’s a good age to start the twice daily feeding routine. Puppies I normally feed 3 times a day (small amounts, divide their total amount recommended per day by 3 to know how much to feed).

Also, be conscious of your dog’s weight. If it’s gaining weight even though you exercise it regularly, you’re probably feeding to much–losing weight, then not enough.

These dogs are VERY high energy and WILL be destructive if you don’t give them adequate exercise and mental stimulation. I work with both my dogs EVERY day and walk them each twice a day for around 30 minutes. Between vet care, bedding or crate, a high quality kibble for adequate nutrition, training lessons, and toys, leashes, etc. I spend anywhere from $500-$1000 every year per dog. This of course does not include the adoption cost or unforseen medical problems. My GSD is a rescue, as is my Border, and he recently had to have hip surgery with a bill totaling around $1200.

You also will need monthly heart worm prevention medication and flea/tick prevention (cost for both depend on the size of your dog), and vaccinations when you adopt. There is a lot of initial cost when you first get the dog, but it does taper off after a while. For six months of heart worm medication for my Border, its around $30, and $35 for three months of flea and tick prevention. It’s MUCH cheaper to treat preventatively than to treat once they have worms, so DON’T skimp here.

Good luck with the new dog, they are great!

David asksā€¦

How many puppies can a border collie have?

I want my boarder collie to have puppies and i want to know how many she might have?

admin answers:

They are BORDER-Collies – from the BORDER of Scotland.
Sheesh! :-0

BCs can have from ONE – a singleton, usually oversized –
to a dozen or more.
Anything over 10 is a very big litter.

Q –
Why do U want to breed Ur BC?

Has she been tested for Brucella? Negative?
Have U screened her for heritable problems?
Has she had OFA or Penn-HIP radiographs of hips + elbows?
Has she had CERF eye-exam + is she free of defects?
A CERF certificate is only valid 12 mos – it is an annual exam,
NOT by a ‘vet’ but by a board-certified k9 ophthalmologist.

BREED-specific Qs –
does she herd?
Compete in other k9 sports?
Is she a conformation-champion?

‘wanting to’ is not a valid reason – she needs to be WORTH breeding.
IOW – an exceptionally good example of both dogs in general,
AND her breed.
Good sires are only put to good Fs – so any local intact-M Border Collie
is not a ‘good’ potential sire. He, too, has to be screened + evaluated
as a worthwhile sire to create pups that are potentially BETTER THAN
either parent alone –

‘breed the best TO the best, and then hope for the best’ !

Also – do U have $$ for complications?
An emergency C-section is about $1200 for a BC-sized F.
That is without any blood transfusion or other extreme measures!
