Your Questions About Dog Training Collars

Ken asks…

Can I trust this site called etronixmart.com to buy dog training collars?

I love my dog, so I decide to select a good dog training collars for it. Then I came across this site: http://www.etronixmart.com/ that offer dog training collars. They are in low price but with amazing function. Anyone who buy from this site can share your suggestion?

admin answers:

Better question – why do you feel the need to electrocute your dog to make him obey you, rather than humanely training him?

Daniel asks…

Does anyone know where I can get a leather/chain combination training collar for my puppy?

I just got a new puppy and am looking for a training collar like the ones I used years ago. It is choker style but buckles on like a regular collar. If anyone knows where I can get one I would appreciate the information.

admin answers:

Here is one http://www.ldsleather.com/collars.html
scroll half way down the page, there is 2 listed one with a slide and the second with a buckle

To search for others, do an internet search for leather martingale, you may be able to turn up some more

These type of collars are referred to as humane choke or limited choke , far nicer and safer than regular choke collars
and very good for dogs that can back out of a regular style collar and helps to keep them safe

I have more links listed here

Paul asks…

Why do you treat your dog like a person?

I’ve asked a few questions about dogs over the last couple of days from kennels outside to choke training collars and it seems like people think I’m being cruel. I want to train my dog properly and have been doing that since I have the luxury of being home during the day. But, I treat the dog like a dog. When he is good, he gets treats and when he is bad, he gets punished. I don’t baby talk to the dog. I don’t put him in sweaters. I don’t like him on the furniture and he doesn’t go on our bed. My husband wanted the dog and I’m trying to make the best of it. Our dog does have a good home, but I treat him like a dog. Why do you treat your dog like a little person? I just don’t understand that. I have a cat and would say I am more a cat person, but then I treat my cat like a cat. Help me understand your logic.
I do treat my animals with love, but love doesn’t mean they can do whatever they want. There are still rules that must be obeyed.
freckles – that’s what I was getting at. That’s the answer I was looking for. Thanks.
I meant no offense by the word, “you”. It’s just that I’ve noticed some people that have dogs, have a different type of behavior with them, as if they can do no wrong. I’m not trying to insult anyone, if that’s how I come across, I seriously would like to know why some people behave this way and others don’t. Honestly.

admin answers:

I love reading the answers to a question like this!
The answer is: because they dont know any better.
Thier dog would actually be happier being treated like a dog!

Recently you see alot of schools teaching positive reinforcement only training.I like to call it “trend training”, it doesnt actually work, but it is what people want to hear and it is what sells. That is why I love Cesar Milan, he still works with correction and everyone says WOW look at his results!..LOL

Dont get me wrong, positive reinforcement is valuable, but only balanced with correction.
What happens when the reward is not as sweet as the distraction?

People should be angry at this trendy training taking over because it means that there are some animals being surrendered to shelters becasue thier owners werent given the right guidance and they couldnt train thier dogs.

Now people go to Petsmart for thier training, guess what, they have to market positive reinforcement only because if someone took correction out of context and abused thier dog, petsmart could get sued!

If you love your dog, treat him like a dog!

Chris asks…

i try very hard to train my chow chow but he still fails to learn. What is the problem?

I am not able to train Cinnamon regardless of how much effort i put. I followed everything as the dog training book (which i bought from amazon.com) suggested but Cinnamon still fails to learn anything.

I don’t think he has any intelligence or memory. He forgets the commands too fast. I spend 45 minutes daily from 1 pm to 1:45 pm trying to train him but my energy and efforts get wasted.
he is 5 months old

admin answers:

Chows are intelligent. Training takes time with them because they are intelligent (some say they are cat like) and will tend to do what they want to do. Keep at it, it will take some time, but eventually it will all fall into place. Remember consistency and patience.

Joseph asks…

What is the best Ceasar Millan book for training a new puppy?

We are in the process of adopting a new puppy. I love Ceasars philosophy on dog training– but he has quite a few books. If anyone has used one to help train their puppy and liked it please let me know! Thanks
What is up with the Ceasar hatred? Is there something I should know.
If not Ceasar than who- any help I can get means a happier puppy – happier world. Thanks!

How much would you pay for guaranteed dog training?

How much would you pay for in home obedience dog training lessons that comes with a guarantee of success, which means, if after 6 lessons the owners are not completely satisfied, we will keep coming back for free until you are. Please state what currency. Thanks 🙂

admin answers:

This will only work if you practise what you are taught every day, you cannot expect to learn a lot in six lessons. Do not pay for six lessons in advance, as he may use rough methods which you will object to.

Where is there good agility dog training in south jersey?

My dog is an English Springer Spaniel and is 4 years old. Ever since he was a puppy he loves to jump. I actually build my own jumps with chairs and rakes and jump him! He’s jumped up to 3’6 and about 4 or 5 feet wide! He really has the potential to be an agility dog. I’ve been looking online for places but the only thing that comes up is dog training and boarding. Any good places around the south jersey area that I could look at?

admin answers:

You got tons of places all over NJ.

My 1st thought goes to Clever K9 in Lakewood. You can google others there’s JAG (Jersey Agility Group) to name another.

I travel to Northern NJ for my agility classes, up in Randolph. Are you close to the PA border?

Your Questions About Dog Training Boulder

Joseph asks…

Why do people blame it on the pits? They just act like they’re trained to?

People actualy think banning these dogs is a good thing……are you serious? sounds like a bunch of biased BS to me! The top three reasons being:

1.Pit bulls have an average score tested by the American temperament society that beats even the “ultimate family dog“, the Golden Retriever.

2.Pit Bulls are no more dangerous than any strong and large dog. They just happen to attract more irresponsible and abusive owners than any other breed.

3. A breed ban will only remove Pit Bulls from good people’s homes and leave them in the hands of animal abusers who couldn’t care less about the law.

So tell me, what is banning the breed gonna help? I have two pits and they’re just big babies. I have never had such loyal dogs. Pit Bulls adore to please their loved ones and respond very well to positive reinforcement. They are intelligent dogs, who easily make associations. They can be a lot of fun to train and often do very well in obedience competitions.
OK Greekman, I think environment is actualy the keyword. What your saying is that these genetics are both physical and mental……..I think not! Sure they’re bred to be muscular but you cant breed mean. Your saying if you took the two meanest people on earth and they mated that automaticly makes their offspring buck nuttie. NO WAY! not if they grew up away from their mean parents in a good home right. Think about it, do you and your parents see eye to eye at all times and do everything the same(sports, hobbies, likes, dislikes,FIGHTING)…NO! You are your own individual (just like dogs) and most of your mental characteristics came from your environment…..not your genetics.

admin answers:

BSL has already been proven to not work. There is not a single case of it actually being effective. It is all based on ignorance. A good example is Boulder Colorado. They banned pit bulls even though labs were the #1 biter in theri area. Their bite/attack statistics have not dropped but have increased.
Those for BSL dont understand the fact that any dog can be dangerous. It is only a matter of time before they add just about every medium to large sized dog to the list.

I would just like to add, someone mentioned that pits bred for fighting are low to the ground. This is not true. They are usually tall and lanky. A dog shorter to the ground would have to work harder than a taller dog and would run out of air faster. The taller they are the more athletic they are likely to be. Take a look at some of the old time gamedogs… Jeep, Hunter Red, Dirty Mary, Reno…. They are all tall and lanky.

Greekman… APBTs are not bred for their aggressiveness to other dogs but for gameness.
Something that way too many people believe that is a complete myth is that APBTs are trained to fight. They are not and they cannot be forced if they dont want to.
Bloodlines do play a big part in breeding dogs. If you breed a dog that shows aggression towards people chances are very high that the pups will be people aggressive as well (which is why people mean APBTs are culled.
Traits are passed down through breeding which is why you sometimes see a herding dog that has never been trained to herd, herd, and a pointer that has never been trained to point game out will point at the robin in your tree.

Charles asks…

What are some things to do in Phoenix, AZ?

I’m going on vacation there soon

admin answers:

The Phoenix Zoo, The Botanical Gardens, Mystery Castle, Wildlife World Zoo and Aquarium, The Phoenix Art Museum, Fashion Square Mall, Hike Piestewa Peak or The South Mountain Park, The Heard Museum, tour Chase Field of University of Phoenix stadium, see a Suns game, ride the metro rail and bar hop, Scottsdale Art Walk, if you’re here in December Glendale Glitters is fun, Boyce Thompson Arboretum, GOLF, Taliesin West (Frank Lloyd Wright’s camp), go antiquing in historic downtown Glendale, in the spring you can go to a spring training baseball game, the Challenger Space Center, Bondurant Racing School of High Performance Driving if you love the thrill of speed., dog races at the Greyhound park, horse races at Turf Paradise, McCormick Ranch Railroad Park, or Encanto Park’s Enchanted Island. There is a ton of stuff to do in Phoenix and the surrounding area, and if you are here long enough, get on I-17 and go north and visit Montezuma’s Castle, the ghost town of Jerome, the lovely cities of Prescott and Sedona. You could spend hours going to all the fun little places in Arizona…one of my favorites is Crown King, but you have to have a durable vehicle and expect the trip to take all day because the average speed limit is about 15-20 mph on one lane, gravel roads that narrow in places that you feel like you’re going to scrape your car’s side on the boulders on the side of the road. Have fun on your vacation!

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Recipes

Michael asks…

Can any one recommend an organic dog cookie/treat recipe ?

I have been trying to eat organic food for the last 6 months, and I feel my dog Lilly is missing out, the only organic cookies I can find she does not like and they are quite expensive.

Betty asks…

Where can I find information on the AAFCO dog food standards?

I don’t use commercial food anymore-I make homemade organic raw diets for my cats and dog from meat etc. and vitamins sold for human consumption. However, I want to make sure they’re getting the right amounts of vitamins and things. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks!

admin answers:

Thats a tough one since they allow euthanized animals from shelters and vet clinics to be grinded into food (meatmeal) and allow other disgusting products in it. Ever hear of the woman Ann Martin? She wrote a book called ‘food pets die for, shocking facts about pet food’, it is excellent and also describes the animal cruelty performed by some companies such as Iams. In the back of the book she has recipes to make for your dogs and cats and talks a little bit about what they need.

The best advice is to ask an Animal Nutritionist, not a veterinarian because they generally don’t know what nutrition is best (they often get deals from pet companies like science diet and iams to advertise their food for a discount and the vet doesn’t even really know how good that food is for an animal). I am really into talking about this so sorry if I am going on. But check out an animal nutritionist and I highly recommend reading that book.

Maria asks…

Does anyone have a recipe for the hard yogurt or carab coating used on dog treats?

I only feed my dog all natural, organic, human-grade foods- including treats and need a recipe for that yogurt or carab coating they use to make designs on them. I got recipes for the actual treats, just need the recipe for the coating. Thanks!

admin answers:

All that’s required is to melt either your yogurt or carob chips in the microwave or a sauce pan and either dip/brush or pipe your cooled treats.

Your Questions About Dog Training Colorado

Daniel asks…

Should i feel guilty for wanting another dog?

I use to live in colorado and i moved to pennsylvania. When i did i had to sell my dog, tip. He was the coolest beaggle. He would climb trees, hunt, and jump fences an get on my roof. Im saving for another dog bcuz i cant stand being without a dog but should i feel guilty for wanting another dog when he was so loyal and protective of me?

admin answers:

They most certainly allow Beagles in Pennsylvania …. You did NOT have to sell your dog because you moved.

Do not get another dog until you are ready to make a life time (for the dog) commitment to the dog. You don’t sell a dog because they are inconvenient.

Only when you are prepared to commit to the dog for its lifetime should you get one. That means – if you move, the dog goes with you. If it is sick, you take it to the vets. If it develops some bad habits, you train it.
A dog depends on you. If you move, you make 100% sure that the place you buy/rent will allow dogs.

A dog should be a member of your family, not something easily disposed of when you get tired of it.

Lisa asks…

Should I fly the dogs or send them by train? What can I do?

I need to get my boyfriends (ex, maybe) dogs back to him in colorado. I live in florida. I read that is it very unsafe to fly the dogs, but there are no trains to take them either. If I did fly them, what would I need to do so? HELP!

admin answers:

I flew my cats from Maryland to Frankfurt, Germany and they did fine. It depends on the time of year (Feb for me) and the airline. Contact a few airlines and see what they say. It may cost you an arm and leg to do so. I paid 100 dollars a cat but thats when I was flying. I think alone it costs more.

William asks…

How can i get my puppy to “go” on the puppy pad?

my dog goes on the floor, hes a puppy but its gross i need him on a puppy pad desperately plz help!

admin answers:

Hi, I have two small dogs that are trained both to use their litter box or to go outside. If I’m home they go out. If I’m not they are confined in the bathroom with their beds and water and with their litter box. So their boxes are just large storage box (maybe 2’x3′ or a bit smaller) with puppy pad in the bottom – I use just a few layers of newspaper now. All the pet stores sell a spray product that leaves a scent (you can’t smell it though, thank goodness), which tells the dogs, this is where go to pee or poo. I guess the scent must be like that one spot in the yard they always go to. Anyhow, it is a bit pricey, but it takes very little and then after a short training time, you no longer even need to use it, they just know where they go. I still have 3/4 of the original bottle I trained them with so start with the small size. So the girls never have accidents in the house – either ask to be let out or use the boxes.

To those who say if you litter box, or pad train a dog, it will go all over the house, it just isn’t true. I guess if you are careless in training then perhaps dogs just think they can go anywhere. But if you are careful and use this spray to help them get the idea, then they just go in the box, not everywhere they want. I think the puppy pad inside the ‘box’ helps them to define the space they are suppose to use and they learn to better ‘aim’. Also with the plastic storage box, it is easy to spray with disinfectant and wipe clean should things ‘runith over’. Both little girls are meticulous with their dual routines and don”t go everywhere around the house – just outside or box..

The two dogs are tiny, and just don’t have bladder enough to last very long although they are adult. In the winter, I have a patio umbrella set-up near the back door. I ‘scoop’ the snow under it so they have a grass place outside to go too. They are just too small to plow their way through the snow and in Colorado we have a lot of snow! Ha ha

Anyhow, look for that scent spray and it helps completely. It is sold right next to the spray that is used for “DONT pee or poo here”.

Good Luck.

Ken asks…

What are some ways that I can block my dogs off from a section of the lawn?

I have a small backyard that is fenced in. Unfortunatly, both of my dogs love to play and dig so my backyard went from a partial green grass to a dirt yard. I live in Colorado so the weather is very dry so its super hard to get grass without grass seed/fertilizer. I know for a fact that fertilizer is very dangerous to dogs and cayenne pepper does not keep them away. I was thinking of putting up a temp fence but didn’t know if there was another way that was possible? Like I said, both of my dogs enjoy digging so I would have to put the fence in the ground which would be very trouble some since this ground is like clay and very hard to dig in. And if I don’t put a fence up. How many hours would it take for the fertilizer to take affect? That a way, I know that my dogs can’t go in the backyard for x amount of hours. I just need to know what kind of options I have.
The back yard I have is a very small backyard. It could fit a 10X12 gazeebo with extra 5ft in length (that’s how small it is). If this is too small for dogs, tell the military that because I live on post. I take them for exercise once a week and the days I don’t take them to the dog park is when I play with them via toys. Since I live in a townhouse and both of my neighbors both have dogs, they dig to play with them because the dogs smell is different (I guess because they never leave them alone). So an invisable fence is mostly used for large fenced in areas. So an invisable fence might work. I really like the chicken wire idea. I have 2 puppies (1 is a 1 yr old and the other is 6 months) so both enjoy playing and have this huge energy. They’ll play for 2 hours in the backyard and as soon as the neighbors dogs go in the backyard, they get all excited and dig to get to them.

admin answers:

== the shock collar from a perimeter wire seems abit over the top but you gotta train them to you tune … It is very difficult to teach a dog parameters and this is a quick learning method …….. Any other way is just too difficult…….

John asks…

How can I help stop the ban of pit bulls in California and anywhere else in the United States?

I grew up around Pit bulls and we have have never had a problem with them biting or attacking anyone, while I know that isnt true for all Pit Bull owners I do know it’s all about how you raise up your dog. Just like children you have to train them the right way. Some dogs have problems being around other dogs because they are never around other dogs, some dogs have a problem being around children because they aren’t from a household that has kids. I just think it’s completely unfair to target a whole breed with no real evidence as to why? Cases of dog bites should not justify this because if that were the case there would be a lot more breed specific dog bans including your “loving” Labordors. Unless they can prove that pit bulls are genetically inclined to attack for no reason without the influence or training of an owner they have no right to ban they whole breed.
I’m looking for sincere pit bull lovers and owners to help stop this ridiculous law.

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Delivery

Sandra asks…

Does anyone know how to make or mix my own garden soil?

Since very few veggies want to grow in my Florida “sand” yard, I want to make raised beds (about 24″ tall as bending over is highly overrated once you zoom past 50 🙂 and will need a LOT of dirt – its way too expensive to haul home bags and getting it delivered would involve a $60.00 delivery fee and hiring someone to help me schlepp it all around the house to the back area. I read years ago how to mix garden soil using dog food and large bags of stuff (I think alfalfa pellets and cat littler were in there but not sure) but didn’t keep the article. If you know how I can build up a LOT of good dirt without spending a fortune I’d be grateful.

admin answers:

Surely if you make what you need from ingredients such as those that you have suggested you’ll still end up bringing home the same weight of material but in a more expensive form? (I’m sure dog food and cat litter cost more than a bag of soil if you measure it by weight!)

Anyway, soil is basically a mix of sand, clay and silt, plus the humus that gardeners love to dig into their soil of course.
As your soil is mostly sand from what you say, you would need to add clay soil to it to up the clay and silt percentage. Check the link to the soil texture triangle to see what I mean. You can check what your soil is made of at the moment using the other link but I think you already know that!
Then you’d need to dig in the organic matter, such as used mushroom compost or farmyard manure to up the humus content of the soil.

I think all in all it’s going to be a lot easier, and probably cheaper, to get a big pile of soil tipped out the front and barrow it round the back to fill your new raised beds. Sorry I couldn’t be more help 🙁

PS Dog food scattered all over the garden just sounds like a recipe to grow rats to me!

Nancy asks…

Homemade food for babies/toddlers?

I make a lot of food for my 12 month old that is easy to freeze and re-heat…baby “hot pockets”, mini meatballs, different pastas, little pot pies, etc. I use mainly organic ingredients and all of the foods are baby friendly, tasty, and healthy. I have been thinking about setting up at the local farmer’s market, but am not sure if it is worth my time and effort…you have to undergo kitchen inspections by the health dept. and become a certified food handler, etc. i figure there are lots of moms who don’t have the time or energy to make the meals for their kids that they like and this would be a great alternative to mac n cheese or the gerber graduate meals. So what do you think? Would it sell???

admin answers:

YES!!! I would buy it for sure, save me the time of doing it.

EDITED:

After reading some of the other responses, I feel that the suggestion of delivery is a great one.

On another note, I have no concerns whatsoever about the cost of feeding my kids. AT ALL, as far as we are concerned, our children should eat as naturally, healthily (is that a word?) and organically, as possible. We already pay extra for wild meat, and organic foods. To be honest, they do get ‘treats’, like hot dogs, etc, but thats rare.

I think your idea is a great one. Try it out on friends. Have them buy the ingredients (to save your $$$) and prepare them some baby food. See if it works, then consider public. I think the market may be not the ideal choice. When I think market, I think hippies. I don’t know why….
Perhaps, run out of your home, you could choose a day (Saturday.???) that people could come pick up their food for the week, or for an additional fee, you could deliver on another day.

Don’t give up on this idea, it obviously flies, or Heinz and Gerber wouldn’t exist.

Sharon asks…

Does this sound legit? I posted an ad on Craigslist looking for a toy breed and she responded. Is it legit ?

Hi
Bella and Kenny are still available. They are hand raised and
home trained with all papers, has been fully checked, KC Registered

and have a good relationship with other pets and well trained too, they
are close ringed…closed bonded and vet checked with up to date vet records.

I am looking for a good home and will meet up any
requirements if need to be for delivery…they are micro chipped, will come
with a pedigree and they are 12 weeks old, they are already KC Tested..

they will be going out with a free cage and other
accessories like toys, blankets, food menu and organic food etc.

I am giving them out because I am here for an assignment and my
job requires a lot of time so I immediately realized that they are
going to be lonely. that is why I have decided to give them out to a loving
and Caring home where they will be loved and will be given all the
time they need.

Temperament of BELLA and KENNY.

They are good companion puppies..Courageous,
extremely lively, proud and enterprising, they give
and demands affection. Bold and saucy. they are
strong-willed, intensely loyal and become very
attached to their owners.
When strangers are present, they follow their owner’s
every move, keeping as close as possible.. .

they are intelligent, learn quickly, and
respond well to proper, gentle (positive reinforcement)
training. They are
well-socialized with strangers and other puppies so if you are really
interested and wants to take care of them, get back lets see how they
get home,
I just have a few questions for you;
where are you located…………..?
Will you be taking both of them? if not, then the male or the
female…………?
Do you have a large yard where they can play…………………?
Do you have a vet that you will take them to if
needed……………………….?

if there is any other thing you will need to know about Bella and Kenny please
do feel free to send me an e-mail OK. Thanks and awaiting
your response asap.
Greeting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

admin answers:

Anyone who would respond to a craigslist ad and wants you to pay to have the dog shipped to you, that is a scam … And it is not just cameroon people, many people right on this continent are doing that scam too … They may not have asked for the shipping money yet, that will be in the next email and if you are not using an anonymous web-based email, they can even use your email from your internet provider to steal your identity … Do not reply, this is 100% a scam … And look for a small breed rescue where you live … There is one where i live that has only toy breeds for three hundred dollars … Some are puppies, some are adults already trained, all are vetted …

Your Questions About Dog Training Boulder

Daniel asks…

Know Anything About The Humane Society?

I have recently filled out an application online for a volunteering job at my local Humane Society? How will I be notified? How long will it take?

admin answers:

It depends entirely on the one you actually went to. At the Boulder Humane Society they have a process. You apply to be a volunteer and then you must attend the volunteer information session, which is posted on the website with date and time. Volunteer apps can be completed online, on paper, before the session or at the session.

Next, you get a phone call within a few days asking you to attend a volunteer interview. They group the volunteer interviews based on which jobs/projects you want to work on at the shelter (kennel assistant versus, say, special events assistant), and at your interview they get some more information on you, you get more information on them, and you find out when the trainings for your area of interest are. So, for a kennel assistant, you’d need to go to the dog or cat center trainings before you can start actually volunteering. For some positions, they have different training or no separate training session (especially ones without any animal contact).

Some of the Boulder HS’s communications are by phone and some are by email.

So for you, go to your local Humane Society’s website and look for information on volunteering, or at least to get the contact number for who to ask. If you can’t find a volunteer coordinator contact, just call the shelter and whomever answers the phone should be able to connect you to the right person to ask.

Mary asks…

What do you hear in nature?

A description of what would you see hear and feel if you spent some time alone in nature.

admin answers:

Having spent a good amount of time hiking in woods and fields around the state of NY, I’ll tell you what I usually hear and feel:
Crunching of leaves as small animals like squirrels sneak around on the ground
The swishing/whispering sound of the wind blowing through the needles of an evergreen tree
The cold, frigid wind blowing south along the Hudson River valley as I was climbing Breakneck Ridge and, a little later, the first warming rays of the sun as it broke over the horizon on that cold November morning.
The sound of my heart pounding as I ran down the other side of this mountain, when there was no one else around.
The sound of a pilated woodpecker hammering on a tree somewhere nearby looking for insects to eat.
The cautious steps of several deer, as they walked farther down the trail, looking at me warily as I walked along the trail and observed them there.
The excited panting of my hiking companion, my german shepherd dog, as he struggles to climb the mountain with me, and the sound of his nails scraping against the rocks and boulders we are climbing.
The low level rumbling and clack clacking of a long freight train slowly making its way south along the tracks on the west side of the Hudson river.
The flapping of an American flag someone has placed at the top of the mountain I am climbing this morning.

Chris asks…

i am looking for the poem ‘the night train’ where can i find it?

this is the night train crossing the border

admin answers:

Night Train (Commentary for a G.P.O. Film, July 1935) by W.H. Auden (1907 – 1973)

This is the Night Mail crossing the border,Bringing the cheque and the postal order,
Letters for the rich, letters for the poor,
The shop at the corner and the girl next door.

Pulling up Beattock, a steady climb:
The gradient’s against her, but she’s on time.

Past cotton-grass and moorland boulder
Shovelling white steam over her shoulder,

Snorting noisily as she passes
Silent miles of wind-bent grasses.

Birds turn their heads as she approaches,
Stare from the bushes at her blank-faced coaches.

Sheep-dogs cannot turn her course;
They slumber on with paws across.

In the farm she passes no one wakes,
But a jug in the bedroom gently shakes.

II

Dawn freshens. Her climb is done.
Down towards Glasgow she descends
Towards the steam tugs yelping down the glade of cranes,
Towards the fields of apparatus, the furnaces
Set on the dark plain like gigantic chessmen.
All Scotland waits for her:
In the dark glens, beside the pale-green sea lochs
Men long for news.

III

Letters of thanks, letters from banks,
Letters of joy from the girl and the boy,
Receipted bills and invitations
To inspect new stock or visit relations,
And applications for situations
And timid lovers’ declarations
And gossip, gossip from all the nations,
News circumstantial, news financial,
Letters with holiday snaps to enlarge in,
Letters with faces scrawled in the margin,
Letters from uncles, cousins, and aunts,
Letters to Scotland from the South of France,
Letters of condolence to Highlands and Lowlands
Notes from overseas to Hebrides
Written on paper of every hue,
The pink, the violet, the white and the blue,
The chatty, the catty, the boring, adoring,
The cold and official and the heart’s outpouring,
Clever, stupid, short and long,
The typed and the printed and the spelt all wrong.

IV

Thousands are still asleep
Dreaming of terrifying monsters,
Or of friendly tea beside the band at Cranston’s or Crawford’s:
Asleep in working Glasgow, asleep in well-set Edinburgh,
Asleep in granite Aberdeen,
They continue their dreams,
And shall wake soon and long for letters,
And none will hear the postman’s knock
Without a quickening of the heart,
For who can bear to feel himself forgotten?

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Brands

Charles asks…

What dog food should I buy my puppy?

I can’t get out to a pet store now and I’m planning on ordering my dog food from now on so I’m going to go to Walgreens for now to get some. Which dog food in the best out of the ones they have available for now? BTW I know they all suck but I now it will take a few days to get the food if I order it online.

Cesar
Kibbles ‘n Bits
Pedigree
Pet Shoppe
Purina

admin answers:

WHAT IN GODS NAME IS GOING ON HERE? Lol All these people are feeding their dogs this stuff??? Number 1 you should NEVER just go to a store and grab some brand. You should always research this. If you do you will learn how to read a dog food label. You will learn what is good for them and what isnt. Trust me 3 months ago I was asking this question myself (well not with these brands), but what dog food is best? After careful research we chose:

BLUE BUFFALO

Yes, it cost a COUPLE (seriously a couple) of dollars more than the crap on the grocery store shelf BUT it has no fillers, its organic, so good for them, and a meat product, not to mention my dogs LOVE IT!!!

Betty asks…

What it the best/healthiest brand of dog food for yorkie pups and pug pups?

For Christmas I am getting a Yorkie and my husband is getting a pug. We really want to do whats best for them and keep them healthy. Does any one have any recommendations on the best/heathiest food or food brand we should buy for them?

admin answers:

This talks about dog food. If you don’t want to read it all just scroll down and it gives a list of good foods and a list of bad foods. The lists are in green so they are easy to find.

I recommend raw. Its the best thing you can feed a dog. It can be cheaper than kibble but its more time consuming but there are so many benefits so its worth it. My dog has white teeth, lots of energy (he acts like a puppy even though he is 10 years old) his fur is soft and shiny, he doesn’t have that dog smell and his poops are very small and are not very odorous. Do lots of research if you want to feed raw. That website that I gave a link to has tons of into on raw.

You don’t have to get organic meat. You can just get any meat. Dogs don’t need veggies and herbs. I feed my dog veggies sometimes for treats and when he poops them out they are the same as when they went in. Dogs cannot digest veggies.
Its actually safer to feed raw. There have been a lot of recalls from contaminated kibble and thousands of dogs have died because of contaminated kibble. While nothing you give your dog to eat is 100% safe, raw is the safest. Here are some myths.
People say its dangerous to prevent other people from switching to raw or people say raw is dangerous because they didn’t bother to do research and just listen to what other people tell them.

Daniel asks…

What is the best brands for all natural or organic dog food?

No brands that abuse animals to test their food please! I thought Iams was good food because thats what my vet recommended : (
I was using Iams Naturals, but then i saw that they abuse the animals they test their food on.

admin answers:

Nutro makes excellent food. They have 3 lines: Max, Natural Choice, and Ultra. With all three lines you will get an all natural, human grade food with added vitamins and minerals; no ground yellow corn, which is a filler and a big allergen among pups; no by-products, which can include heads, feet and intestines; and no artificial flavors or colors. Nutro also has the highest levels of essential fatty acids (Omega 6) to help promote healthy skin and coat and also reduce shedding. And all of their foods are 100% guaranteed! Max is your basic premium food, and from what I’ve seen, the lowest priced premium food on the market. Natural Choice has taurine added and is more geared towards dogs with specific needs (i.e. Sensitive skin, sensitive stomach, allergies, etc.). And Ultra is a holistic food with more fruits and vegetables, also known as super foods, which help with your pups immune system, joints, heart, vision, brain, etc.

Your Questions About Dog Training

Charles asks…

what is the best dog training book to read for an apbt puppy?

i recently ordered pit bulls for dummies, and will soon acquire a copy of dog training for dummies.

the lady that lives downstairs from me gave me a book titled ‘Smarter than you Think’ and it tells you to throw things at your dog to teach it to come, and to stick a match in its butt to poop, and not trust dog food companies, and all this weird stuff, not too sure about that book.

any other suggestions? or tips?

admin answers:

When I had just got my APBT I went to my local library’s site and in the keyword box i put Pit Bull and it came up with alot of good books that were really useful so try looking up your library. They have alot of info on APBTs. Good luck

William asks…

What to put on a dog training registration form?

i have a little dog training business and i use to have this form on hand but it has somehow gone missing. i know what information i need from the owners and what not but i cant remember what i put in the release/waiver at the bottom. any ideas?

admin answers:

I would employ an attorney to draft the release language for you. In today’s society, people will sue you for just about anything. You want to be as well-protected as possible in case there is a mishap and a dog or person is injured or killed (so, not only making sure the release language is legally sound, but also carrying an appropriate amount of liability insurance for your business). To me, it is worth the expenditure to have something professionally done that is specific to your business in instances like this.

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Recipes

Robert asks…

What is the best/ healthiest dog food out there?

I have an eight pound chihuahua and he is my baby! He is one and a half years old and is short -haired. I’m looking for a different brand of food for him. I currently give him Beneful, but I’ve read that it contains corn/ fillers. What’s a healthier alternative? Thanx a bunch and Happy Holidays!

admin answers:

Changing it’s dog food is a good idea, but do it gradually so you don’t make your dog sick. Start with 3/4 old food and 1/4 new and see how your dog tolerates the new. If no problem after a few days, increase the new amount to 1/3 new and 2/3 old and after a few more days, 1/2 and 1/2, then reverse the order until the dog is on the new food.
If your dog is under a year old, you could consider some of the following brands and see what’s available in a bite size for your tiny dog:
Innova Evo, Canidae, Royal Canin “Baby Dog” or one made specifically for chihuahua, Newman’s Own Organics, Wellness-
These are a few brands that are better quality. For highest quality you could consider looking into Dr. Pitcairn’s recipe’s for dogs (home cooked). Then you know exactly what goes into the food and what the quality of the product is.
Happy Holidays to you and yours as well!

Mandy asks…

What are some good finger food receipe for toddler?

My daughter is 18 months and she loves to feed herself. She like baked potatoes (but cut info like a fry), Chicken nuggest, Pasta, Organic (hot dogs), pizza. But i want more FINGER FOOD idea’s and homemade receipes. Thanks

admin answers:

You really don’t need any special recipes. She can eat whatever you guys are eating for meals. I do grill chicken once a week with red peppers and cut into strips and freeze so if we are eating something she doesn’t like, she can have that. I also make homemade mac and cheese w/ chicken and veggies that I freeze into individual portions. My daughter doesn’t like ground beef, so if we have hamburgers, taco’s etc, I can pull on of those from the freezer for her.

My daughter is 22 months, and has pretty much been eating what we eat since she was about 13 months old.

Nancy asks…

Where can I find homemade dog food?

looking for recipes for homemade dog treats and foods?
i don’t feed my dog table scraps i am looking for recipes….for dog bones and sytuff like that, less chemicals

admin answers:

Never feed your dog too many dinner scraps or the same family menu, because ‘human’ food can contain ‘unfriendly’ components that are no good for pets… Homemade dog food is excellent when chosen and prepared correctly.

The recipes are usually so good, that you’ll want to try them yourself… Go ahead, it’s normal food… The types of ingredients are the main consideration, usually organic and additive free.

I have supplied a source link below to a few easy-to-prepare dog food recipes and treats… Your pooch will absolutely love them!

What’s the best dog training book? When’s a good age to begin training commands?

I just got a puppy and I am wondering what is the best dog training book available. I am looking for one that teaches me how to teach obedience and some trick that is an easy read. I am the owner of an adorable boxer puppy. Also, if anyone knows, whats a good age to start training. Shes almost 8 weeks and I am working on the sit command with treats but she seems to have no interest. She gets way to distracted. Thanks.

admin answers:

She’s still pretty young–it’s illegal to take a pup away from her mother before age 8-10 weeks. You’re starting out right with the “sit” command. Take some time and go to a book store and look at training books. Even one of those yellow and black “Dummie” books would be good, I bet. I don’t know if there is one for training dogs, but they have them for eveything else.

Can you purchase life jackets for your dogs?

Your Questions About Dog Training Colorado

George asks…

Is Colorado a good home for a Siberian husky?

I’m getting a siberian husky and I live in castle rock Colorado. I was wondering if tht is a good home for a husky. I want the dog to be happy to 🙂 thnx!

admin answers:

The climate is totally fine for a Siberian, realize, though, that these dogs are working and racing dogs so just because they like the temperature doesn’t mean that they are happy.

Your dog will need to RUN several times a day and will never be trustworthy off a leash in an unfenced area. Siberians also have more primitive tendencies like a higher prey drive, pack-oriented nature but not easy obedience training, and more tendency to perceive and exploit weaknesses in other pack members and pack leaders.

Siberians are wonderful dogs, look up Skijoring and X-Joring as two possible ways to work off all of that energy or sign up for obedience, agility, or flyball classes in your area for help with training, socialization, and exercise needs.

Good luck!

Paul asks…

What dog breed would be right for me?

Saile wants a big dog that is reasonable to train at a young age, can be used for bird hunting as well as tracking imposters on a few acres of land, is fun to play with even if it plays mean, has to do well in the kind of weather and temperatures that occur every season in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Most importantly of all, it has to make a good companion for his owner and can be trained to like his friends and family and possibly be a little meaner to a few certain people.

admin answers:

First of all, think about which type of dogs you like and find attractive. Then you decide, which dog would serve your purposes and how much you are willing or able to spend. Dogs with papers can be very expensive. Sometimes you get good deals from ASPCA. The other thing that it’s very important to train the dog in all the areas you mention. You could do it yourself or better yet, if you can have a trainer do it. Also look at the dog’s physical and emotional condition, and if possible how was he treated by his/her previous owner. Also consider the dog’s age in order to determine his/her life expectancy The age would also determine what type of training would be most appropriate

In terms of dogs I especially like St Bernards, German Shepherd , Doberman, Great Dane, Alaskan Huskies. Good Luck and enjoy,

Mandy asks…

Im 16 and I am considering a future with educating special needs children, I have a few questions?

I remember in elementary school across from my 4th grade classroom was the special kids class and a few times a week, the teacher would bring her two corgi’s in and of course I was jealous because I LOVE dogs(I’m very experienced with dogs, and I’d be a vet but I’m not as good at science as I think I am :)). So I was wondering if the school would allow me to bring a dog to work for the kids?

Also, how much schooling do I need to work with special needs children? I would want to work with elementary school aged children.

What is teaching and working with special need children like (how many children are in a class, etc)?

I know that this job can be very challenging and requires loads of patience and understanding (not just with the kids, parents too haha) because I babysit a 10 year old boy with autism and help him with his homework every school day and sometimes weekends, I also just did a research report on autism, but only working with Brandon allowed me to fully understand the disorder. Any stories of your experiences would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

admin answers:

I’m a special education teacher. I started out taking care of a boy who had autism like you did, then while I was in college I started working for a company that aided people with cognitive disabilities in obtaining and training for jobs. I later worked for a company where I worked one on one with people with disabilities. I moved to another state and began my master’s degree in Special Education and worked in a public school system also with people with cognitive disabilities. When I graduated with my degree I got a job in Colorado in a room working with Behavior Disorder children. I currently still have that job.

So, here is my advice to you. If you don’t like paper work do not become a teacher, become an aide or para. Second, be understanding that the field of education encompasses many disabilities. Either you hold out for the job you really want or you’re flexible with what you want to do! My paras work with the kids more than I do. You will have long days, be abused by children, parents, and administration to varying degrees. Often times you do not do as much help as you’d like to do. It’s very overwhelming and often your aides are incompetent. I’m not trying to say don’t do it, but don’t romanticize the job or think it’s “sweet” to help the poor little disabled children. Don’t romanticize disabilities either.

Your Questions About Organic Dog Food Amazon

Helen asks…

How much people can 1 acre land feeds?

I mean keeping biotechnology and other factors in mind .how much people can 1 acre feed.

admin answers:

Best Answer – Chosen by Asker
One eighth of one acre per person. Awhile ago I had the exact same question and my research led me to a man named John Jeavons. You can look up his farming book on Amazon and even if you’re not a farmer it’s an interesting read because of the amazing and effecient techniques he uses. And he’s legit – not just a farmer, he heads a worldwide program called Biointensive that teaches people how to farm their own food and gain self-sufficiency. His techniques are based on scientific research and include advanced topics such as crop pairing, soil structure and composition, sustainability (so you don’t deplete the soil), etc. One thing to mention though is that the diet you would recieve from these techniques is 100% vegan (as well as organic/free of pesticides) and, as with a lot of similar diets, there is a defeciency in Vitamin b12. Jeavons was working on this last I checked and he may have found a solution by now. Rainwater would only be sufficient in that region if you had a separate cistern/rain catcher and could then use that to water your crops. And as for the animals if you want them, I have heard that feeding dogs and the like a vegan diet such as the one this system would produce will not only sustain them but keep them very healthy. I used to wonder about this kind of diet for humans and animals alike, I had always suspected that not eating meat or dairy would cause some sort of health problems, but then I remember that I know people who have been vegan since birth, never touched a piece of meat, and they are normal, healthy, athletic human beings.

Hi, I have a 6 month old maltese/mini aussie mix I took her to the vet the other day and she told me my pup was underweight, I never relized it until she said something, I feed her twice a day and I thought she was eating okay, but now that I pay more attention to how much she eats I noticed she doesnt eat much at all I even bought her wet dog food thinking she would like it better, she does but she doesn’t go crazy over it like most dogs would she also doesn’t like any treats that I buy her… she is very picky. I feed her pedigree the vet told me that was okay but not that great of food for dogs. I’m really worried about her it’s gotten to the point where I feed her with a spoon so she will eat and not be distracted..Now she’s not deathly skinny shes just thinner than she should be, any ideas on how i can fatten her up? Any suggestions of good food I can give that she will enjoy….Anything will be helpful Thanks!

admin answers:

Pedigree (or most foods you can buy at Petsmart/Petco/grocery stores) are not that great. Your vet is right! They contain a lot of fillers like corn and animal byproducts that aren’t very nutritious for your dog. You may want to consider buying a more premium food. JBpet.com lists some great foods that you can order to have shipped to you, OR visit your local independent pet store for some suggestions. I’ve listed the Old Mother Hubbard site below, too — they make Wellness kibble and canned food for dogs, and they have a store directory. VERY high quality stuff! Some other great brands are Innova EVO, Flint River Ranch (site below), California Natural, Canidae and Newman’s Own.

Those foods may be more expensive, but you actually don’t need to feed that much. They are made of human-grade, often organic ingredients and dont’ contain any fillers. They are very rich, so you might need to feed even less than you feed on the Pedigree now. It’ll say on the back of the bag. It often tastes better to the dogs, too!

You might also want to look into the book, “The Good Food Cookbook for Dogs,” search on amazon.com. It has vet-approved stews you can make (and treats, too) that can be served on top of kibble to make it more appetizing to your pup.

Carol asks…

Veg*ns, what do you feed your pets?

Or if you prefer- companion animal/s.

My pet is a vegan. What about yours? If you have a cat or dog, do you feed it organic meats?

Thanks for your feedback =D
Keith- But my pet is a bunny so it’s OK. Good answer though.
La Vie Boheme- I meant vegan diet, not a vegan. Sorry! =D
The Great Leap- Thanks so much! :)x

My Husky has been vegan for several years now and is very healthy, in fact more so because he is less of a tubbo. Dogs are well documented for their omnivore like abilities.

The oldest lived dog in Britain in fact was a vegan and died around 29 years of age.

I used to go with v-dog but the price of the food plus shipping was killing me. Great food though, no complaints about that.

I went then with Avoderm which is also pretty good but the shipping was still killing me.

Finally I ended up with Natures Recipe via my local Petco which gives me a free bag of food every ten I buy. This puts the price well under a 1 per pound which for good quality vegan pet food is a steal.

I attempted to feed my girlfriends cat vegan for a while. First I tried Evolution

http://www.vegancats.com/pages/1002/Cat_Food_-_Ready_Made.htm

which had a potential ph balance issue so I switched to vegecat which you have to put together and bake yourself.

Our cat ate the food pretty good but seemed to tire of it so my girlfriend bought her Wysong which though is good quality sadly has slaughtered animals in it.

In the future I plan to be very careful as to only take in animals which can be fed vegan.

Your Questions About Dog Training Collars

John asks…

Can someone help explain how to sell items on e-bay?

Is it simple? I’m not good with computers that’s why I’m asking! I have a remote control dog training collar with citronella that I want to sell and some PINK clothes from Victoria’s Secret. If someone can explain the steps in selling something on E-bay, I’d be really happy. THANKS!

admin answers:

Take a picture of it with a digital camera, upload it to your computer, sign in to ebay( I am presuming you have an account, if not you need to sit all that up first-they have FAQs and live help) go to sell an item, follow all the stuff on the screen such as category and description, upload your picture, set your price, set your shipping method and price and then list the item. I suggest you look at some descriptions of items that are close to what you want to sell so that you can get an idea of how writting a description will look and how similar items are priced.

Lizzie asks…

Pet-safe yard and park Remote Trainer or Innotek UltraSmart Micro Remote Dog Training Collar?

I am considering purchasing a remote training collar for my dog. Mostly to teach her to come on command, even when she’s distracted. If you have had experience with either of these two particular brands, please leave me some feed back Thanks!

admin answers:

Pet-Safe is the short cut brand – cheap but not very long lasting. Innotek is one of the two top brands (the other which I believe to be superior is Tri-Tronics).

Steven asks…

How do you FIX a dog that only listen to you perfectly on leash but not when no leash?

The dog was trained with a collar and leash, the dog and the collar is the master now. Once taken off, the dog go run around like a wild horse. Put the dog on a long line with a collar the dog settles. When put on a short walk leash with a collar, the dog is fine. Once take them off, he does not hear nor see you.

admin answers:

A lot more training. The dog’s obviously not really trained, hasn’t been proofed and isn’t ready to be allowed off lead. Classes will help immensely, distractions are something you really need, and perhaps other methods of training as well.

Your Questions About Dog Training Denver

Sharon asks…

Where is the best place to live in the usa if you are into dogs?

Schutzhund, Ring, Personal Protection, AKC obedience, etc. I know lots of people travel long distance to train dogs (if they can with lots of money … it would be best if you lived in the area where good dog trainers and great vets lived in your area. Which part of the US is known as ” dog state” ?

admin answers:

Denver, Colorado.

John asks…

Where can I buy a ferret from a pet store in Colorado?

I live in the denver area. Not really interested in adoption.

admin answers:

Lets talk about adopting instead of purchasing through a pet store.
Advantages: Shelter workers have had a chance to see what the personality of the ferret is like. (looking for a snuggler, a thief, a sleeper or something in between?) They probably have assessed the medical issues (if any) and treated or started treatment (just like cars, a new one can be a ‘lemon’ while a used one usually has some history attached to it).
They probably have worked on any issues such as biting, fear, chewing etc. A ferret who has started to learn is easier to train than one who hasn’t started. Biggest advantage: at some point in their life, they’ve been let down by a human owner…..you can turn their experience around.
Do you really think that a pet store ferret (normally very young) has had any proper training, any proper handling (other than a finger stuck through the cage?), any proper food (most pet store sell crap food, honestly. Most shelters use better food than you give your cat or dog)?
I mean, why would you spend big bucks at a store when you can usually get a ferret much cheaper (also the cage and supplies) from a shelter? Perhaps you don’t wish to submit to the ‘ferret proofing’ checklists and background check that most shelters will do to protect the interests of the ferrets. Most shelters see their animals as victims of abuse they must protect and seek a better life for. Most pet stores see their animals a a commodity they must make the maximum profit on. If you can’t provide a hazard free home for the ferret then you shouldn’t own one..bottom line. PLEASE research ferrets before you purchase them…they are NOT a pet like a rabbit or even a cat. They need to exercise (NOT IN A CAGE) and need mental stimulation. They like human interaction. They are WORK…they make messes, and will frustrate the h*ll out of you when they tear your house apart….but they will melt your heart every time you see and play with them. OH YES…they don’t smell MUCH—but their urine does, so unless you plan on cleaning their litter pan/ messes up daily, don’t get a ferret. Did I mention work?
I love our 9 ferrets. I wouldn’t trade them for anything. They take a lot of work, and it just ticks me off when people buy one thinking it’s just like a hamster they can keep caged up all day, and clean the cage once a week. Look at it this way…
If you’d like to stay in your bedroom all day, every day, and poo in the corner for a week, then go ahead. But a ferret doesn’t deserve the same thing. Before you purchase a ferret, call up a shelter in your area and ask to see some ferrets first. Go look at someone’s home. Too smelly? To ferret proofed? Get a good look at what life is like with a ferret before you buy one, decide he’s not what you thought he’d be, and then take him back or abandon him. News flash, domesticated ferrets WILL die if abandoned outside.
Most ferrets are abandoned or surrendered because their owners DID NOT do the research on what they were getting into. If you think a pet store ferret is going to come home with you the first day and lick your fingers like a puppy, then please don’t buy one. You couldn’t be further from the truth.

Mandy asks…

How do i get my puppy to come to me everytime i call?

My puppy hasn’t started puppy classes yet as there is a set 6 weeks programme. I want her to start learning now though as she is already 13 weeks. She knows the basics sit etc but she doesn’t always come to me when I call especially when she is distracted. Anyone have any training techniques for this?

admin answers:

First imprint yourself on your puppy. Do this by cupping your hand around his muzzle and very gently blowing your breath on his nose. Let her become accustom to your smell. Do this 4 or 5 times each day for about a month more if need be. Place clothing you have worn but not washed in her bed where she sleeps. (change it out every couple of days)
/
Then when you talk to her or call her do it in a normal tone and not harsh unless she is in danger of being injured. Teach her such words as “come” or “come here” and point to where you want her to come. When she does this reward her with a treat or petting her telling her she is a “good girl!” with enthusiasm.
/
I trained my dog to know about 15 or 20 commands today when “free” he never goes more than about 50 feet from me usually about 10 feet. He “stays” on command instantly. I very seldom have to raise my voice to him unless he is in danger of being injured. I have been told by hundreds of people he is the most well mannered dog they have ever seen.
/
When he does something bad which is very seldom or when someone comes in the door and he would be in the way he has a command that sends him immediately to his bed. I learned this from my uncle with his dogs. He told his dogs to, “Get in Texas” and that pup would run and get in its bed and stay until called. I have trained my pup to, “Get in Denver” he goes and gets in. My dog has never been caged because he was taught from a puppy how to act and what to do. It takes time but well worth the effort.
