Richard asks…

Is it Possible to Train Your Dog Yourself?

I Was Planning on Buying One Of Those Dog Training Books To Train My Dog. But before i Do, i Just want to Know if Its Possible To Train Your Dog if You’re Not a Professional. And i Don’t Want to Spend A lot Of Money on a Dog Trainer.

admin answers:

Yes, when I looked into training my dog I found a website that has been very helpful. Leerburg.com
They have lots of free information. Then there are DVD’s that teach you how to train. Good Luck!
With the help of the DVD’s I was very confident and successfull in training my dog.

Chris asks…

i try very hard to train my chow chow but he still fails to learn. What is the problem?

I am not able to train Cinnamon regardless of how much effort i put. I followed everything as the dog training book (which i bought from amazon.com) suggested but Cinnamon still fails to learn anything.

I don’t think he has any intelligence or memory. He forgets the commands too fast. I spend 45 minutes daily from 1 pm to 1:45 pm trying to train him but my energy and efforts get wasted.
he is 5 months old

admin answers:

Chows are intelligent. Training takes time with them because they are intelligent (some say they are cat like) and will tend to do what they want to do. Keep at it, it will take some time, but eventually it will all fall into place. Remember consistency and patience.

Joseph asks…

What is the best Ceasar Millan book for training a new puppy?

We are in the process of adopting a new puppy. I love Ceasars philosophy on dog training– but he has quite a few books. If anyone has used one to help train their puppy and liked it please let me know! Thanks
What is up with the Ceasar hatred? Is there something I should know.
If not Ceasar than who- any help I can get means a happier puppy – happier world. Thanks!

admin answers:

Absolutely none. Read the link I posted in your last question for more information on Dominance Theory, which is what Cesar uses.

Your Questions About Dog Training

Betty asks…

How much would you pay for guaranteed dog training?

How much would you pay for in home obedience dog training lessons that comes with a guarantee of success, which means, if after 6 lessons the owners are not completely satisfied, we will keep coming back for free until you are. Please state what currency. Thanks 🙂

admin answers:

This will only work if you practise what you are taught every day, you cannot expect to learn a lot in six lessons. Do not pay for six lessons in advance, as he may use rough methods which you will object to.

Ken asks…

Where is there good agility dog training in south jersey?

My dog is an English Springer Spaniel and is 4 years old. Ever since he was a puppy he loves to jump. I actually build my own jumps with chairs and rakes and jump him! He’s jumped up to 3’6 and about 4 or 5 feet wide! He really has the potential to be an agility dog. I’ve been looking online for places but the only thing that comes up is dog training and boarding. Any good places around the south jersey area that I could look at?

admin answers:

You got tons of places all over NJ.

My 1st thought goes to Clever K9 in Lakewood. You can google others there’s JAG (Jersey Agility Group) to name another.

I travel to Northern NJ for my agility classes, up in Randolph. Are you close to the PA border?

You can find an agility training faclitity thru the following:

Your Questions About Dog Training Boulder

Joseph asks…

Why do people blame it on the pits? They just act like they’re trained to?

People actualy think banning these dogs is a good thing……are you serious? sounds like a bunch of biased BS to me! The top three reasons being:

1.Pit bulls have an average score tested by the American temperament society that beats even the “ultimate family dog“, the Golden Retriever.

2.Pit Bulls are no more dangerous than any strong and large dog. They just happen to attract more irresponsible and abusive owners than any other breed.

3. A breed ban will only remove Pit Bulls from good people’s homes and leave them in the hands of animal abusers who couldn’t care less about the law.

So tell me, what is banning the breed gonna help? I have two pits and they’re just big babies. I have never had such loyal dogs. Pit Bulls adore to please their loved ones and respond very well to positive reinforcement. They are intelligent dogs, who easily make associations. They can be a lot of fun to train and often do very well in obedience competitions.
OK Greekman, I think environment is actualy the keyword. What your saying is that these genetics are both physical and mental……..I think not! Sure they’re bred to be muscular but you cant breed mean. Your saying if you took the two meanest people on earth and they mated that automaticly makes their offspring buck nuttie. NO WAY! not if they grew up away from their mean parents in a good home right. Think about it, do you and your parents see eye to eye at all times and do everything the same(sports, hobbies, likes, dislikes,FIGHTING)…NO! You are your own individual (just like dogs) and most of your mental characteristics came from your environment…..not your genetics.

admin answers:

BSL has already been proven to not work. There is not a single case of it actually being effective. It is all based on ignorance. A good example is Boulder Colorado. They banned pit bulls even though labs were the #1 biter in theri area. Their bite/attack statistics have not dropped but have increased.
Those for BSL dont understand the fact that any dog can be dangerous. It is only a matter of time before they add just about every medium to large sized dog to the list.

I would just like to add, someone mentioned that pits bred for fighting are low to the ground. This is not true. They are usually tall and lanky. A dog shorter to the ground would have to work harder than a taller dog and would run out of air faster. The taller they are the more athletic they are likely to be. Take a look at some of the old time gamedogs… Jeep, Hunter Red, Dirty Mary, Reno…. They are all tall and lanky.

Greekman… APBTs are not bred for their aggressiveness to other dogs but for gameness.
Something that way too many people believe that is a complete myth is that APBTs are trained to fight. They are not and they cannot be forced if they dont want to.
Bloodlines do play a big part in breeding dogs. If you breed a dog that shows aggression towards people chances are very high that the pups will be people aggressive as well (which is why people mean APBTs are culled.
Traits are passed down through breeding which is why you sometimes see a herding dog that has never been trained to herd, herd, and a pointer that has never been trained to point game out will point at the robin in your tree.

Charles asks…

What are some things to do in Phoenix, AZ?

I’m going on vacation there soon

admin answers:

The Phoenix Zoo, The Botanical Gardens, Mystery Castle, Wildlife World Zoo and Aquarium, The Phoenix Art Museum, Fashion Square Mall, Hike Piestewa Peak or The South Mountain Park, The Heard Museum, tour Chase Field of University of Phoenix stadium, see a Suns game, ride the metro rail and bar hop, Scottsdale Art Walk, if you’re here in December Glendale Glitters is fun, Boyce Thompson Arboretum, GOLF, Taliesin West (Frank Lloyd Wright’s camp), go antiquing in historic downtown Glendale, in the spring you can go to a spring training baseball game, the Challenger Space Center, Bondurant Racing School of High Performance Driving if you love the thrill of speed., dog races at the Greyhound park, horse races at Turf Paradise, McCormick Ranch Railroad Park, or Encanto Park’s Enchanted Island. There is a ton of stuff to do in Phoenix and the surrounding area, and if you are here long enough, get on I-17 and go north and visit Montezuma’s Castle, the ghost town of Jerome, the lovely cities of Prescott and Sedona. You could spend hours going to all the fun little places in Arizona…one of my favorites is Crown King, but you have to have a durable vehicle and expect the trip to take all day because the average speed limit is about 15-20 mph on one lane, gravel roads that narrow in places that you feel like you’re going to scrape your car’s side on the boulders on the side of the road. Have fun on your vacation!

Your Questions About Dog Training Colorado

Daniel asks…

Should i feel guilty for wanting another dog?

I use to live in colorado and i moved to pennsylvania. When i did i had to sell my dog, tip. He was the coolest beaggle. He would climb trees, hunt, and jump fences an get on my roof. Im saving for another dog bcuz i cant stand being without a dog but should i feel guilty for wanting another dog when he was so loyal and protective of me?

admin answers:

They most certainly allow Beagles in Pennsylvania …. You did NOT have to sell your dog because you moved.

Do not get another dog until you are ready to make a life time (for the dog) commitment to the dog. You don’t sell a dog because they are inconvenient.

Only when you are prepared to commit to the dog for its lifetime should you get one. That means – if you move, the dog goes with you. If it is sick, you take it to the vets. If it develops some bad habits, you train it.
A dog depends on you. If you move, you make 100% sure that the place you buy/rent will allow dogs.

A dog should be a member of your family, not something easily disposed of when you get tired of it.

Lisa asks…

Should I fly the dogs or send them by train? What can I do?

I need to get my boyfriends (ex, maybe) dogs back to him in colorado. I live in florida. I read that is it very unsafe to fly the dogs, but there are no trains to take them either. If I did fly them, what would I need to do so? HELP!

admin answers:

I flew my cats from Maryland to Frankfurt, Germany and they did fine. It depends on the time of year (Feb for me) and the airline. Contact a few airlines and see what they say. It may cost you an arm and leg to do so. I paid 100 dollars a cat but thats when I was flying. I think alone it costs more.

William asks…

How can i get my puppy to “go” on the puppy pad?

my dog goes on the floor, hes a puppy but its gross i need him on a puppy pad desperately plz help!

admin answers:

Hi, I have two small dogs that are trained both to use their litter box or to go outside. If I’m home they go out. If I’m not they are confined in the bathroom with their beds and water and with their litter box. So their boxes are just large storage box (maybe 2’x3′ or a bit smaller) with puppy pad in the bottom – I use just a few layers of newspaper now. All the pet stores sell a spray product that leaves a scent (you can’t smell it though, thank goodness), which tells the dogs, this is where go to pee or poo. I guess the scent must be like that one spot in the yard they always go to. Anyhow, it is a bit pricey, but it takes very little and then after a short training time, you no longer even need to use it, they just know where they go. I still have 3/4 of the original bottle I trained them with so start with the small size. So the girls never have accidents in the house – either ask to be let out or use the boxes.

To those who say if you litter box, or pad train a dog, it will go all over the house, it just isn’t true. I guess if you are careless in training then perhaps dogs just think they can go anywhere. But if you are careful and use this spray to help them get the idea, then they just go in the box, not everywhere they want. I think the puppy pad inside the ‘box’ helps them to define the space they are suppose to use and they learn to better ‘aim’. Also with the plastic storage box, it is easy to spray with disinfectant and wipe clean should things ‘runith over’. Both little girls are meticulous with their dual routines and don”t go everywhere around the house – just outside or box..

The two dogs are tiny, and just don’t have bladder enough to last very long although they are adult. In the winter, I have a patio umbrella set-up near the back door. I ‘scoop’ the snow under it so they have a grass place outside to go too. They are just too small to plow their way through the snow and in Colorado we have a lot of snow! Ha ha

Anyhow, look for that scent spray and it helps completely. It is sold right next to the spray that is used for “DONT pee or poo here”.

Good Luck.

Your Questions About Dog Training Colorado

Does anyone have good dog training company in colorado springs you know of?

Ken asks…

What are some ways that I can block my dogs off from a section of the lawn?

I have a small backyard that is fenced in. Unfortunatly, both of my dogs love to play and dig so my backyard went from a partial green grass to a dirt yard. I live in Colorado so the weather is very dry so its super hard to get grass without grass seed/fertilizer. I know for a fact that fertilizer is very dangerous to dogs and cayenne pepper does not keep them away. I was thinking of putting up a temp fence but didn’t know if there was another way that was possible? Like I said, both of my dogs enjoy digging so I would have to put the fence in the ground which would be very trouble some since this ground is like clay and very hard to dig in. And if I don’t put a fence up. How many hours would it take for the fertilizer to take affect? That a way, I know that my dogs can’t go in the backyard for x amount of hours. I just need to know what kind of options I have.
The back yard I have is a very small backyard. It could fit a 10X12 gazeebo with extra 5ft in length (that’s how small it is). If this is too small for dogs, tell the military that because I live on post. I take them for exercise once a week and the days I don’t take them to the dog park is when I play with them via toys. Since I live in a townhouse and both of my neighbors both have dogs, they dig to play with them because the dogs smell is different (I guess because they never leave them alone). So an invisable fence is mostly used for large fenced in areas. So an invisable fence might work. I really like the chicken wire idea. I have 2 puppies (1 is a 1 yr old and the other is 6 months) so both enjoy playing and have this huge energy. They’ll play for 2 hours in the backyard and as soon as the neighbors dogs go in the backyard, they get all excited and dig to get to them.

admin answers:

== the shock collar from a perimeter wire seems abit over the top but you gotta train them to you tune … It is very difficult to teach a dog parameters and this is a quick learning method …….. Any other way is just too difficult…….

John asks…

How can I help stop the ban of pit bulls in California and anywhere else in the United States?

I grew up around Pit bulls and we have have never had a problem with them biting or attacking anyone, while I know that isnt true for all Pit Bull owners I do know it’s all about how you raise up your dog. Just like children you have to train them the right way. Some dogs have problems being around other dogs because they are never around other dogs, some dogs have a problem being around children because they aren’t from a household that has kids. I just think it’s completely unfair to target a whole breed with no real evidence as to why? Cases of dog bites should not justify this because if that were the case there would be a lot more breed specific dog bans including your “loving” Labordors. Unless they can prove that pit bulls are genetically inclined to attack for no reason without the influence or training of an owner they have no right to ban they whole breed.
I’m looking for sincere pit bull lovers and owners to help stop this ridiculous law.

Your Questions About Dog Training Collars

Ruth asks…

What is the purpose of a training collar?

I’m trying to get my dog not to pull and lead, so I got a Sporn Halter. After going online, people said that I should combine the halter with a training collar. But I can’t find a good explanation of what it is. Also advice on what to do? Thanks

admin answers:

It is a device people use so they don’t have to actually train the dog.

Throw the harness out and TRAIN the dog to walk nicely on a leash. A basic obedience class can help you with that.

Michael asks…

Can you tell me some positive experiences you have had with electronic dog training collars?

I know many people don’t like the idea of using electronic shock training collars. But I also know most people don’t know how to train their dogs properly which results in dogs biting people, running away and getting hit by cars. Tell me some positive stories.

admin answers:

In 43 years of owning, training, breeding and showing dogs, I have used an electric collar once.

We live on 180 acres, but do have a country road on 2 sides of the property. Our dogs are kept in our fenced yard unless we are working, playing or walking them.

My one dog was about 3 years old. Trained for agility and competing..basic “companion obedience”. He would come when called, would “heel” or “side” when told, when released, would trot ahead of me 50 feet or so, stopping and checking periodically to make sure I was still coming. If I turned and walked the other direction, he would turn too, run to me. He would “wait up” when told, and “down” at a distance when told.

In other words: he was HIGHLY trained. I had put a LOT of time into him. And he KNEW what was allowed, and to “obey”

Well, one day, at around 3 years old, as I said, he and my daughter’s dog kicked up a jack rabbit…and off they went. To the end of our property into the neighboring orchard…they would not call off. To me, this is absolutely NOT ALLOWED! Because it is dangerous. The rabbit could have run a different direction across the road….

So, I borrowed a friend’s E-collar.

Only because I KNEW my dog KNEW what “Micah, come” meant.

Took a week of walking daily until we kicked up another rabbit. Off he went. I called, in my normal happy voice “Micah, come!”…no response. Gave him another chance, “Micah! COME” louder. No response. Hit the button, he stopped and jumped. Again, I said “Micah! Come” still in a happy voice. He came, I told him him “Good Boy”.

End of story. Never used it again.

But…..remember, I only used it because I KNEW he KNEW what “come” meant. He was simply too caught up in the chase and chose to ignore me. And by ignoring me, he could have gotten killed.

Micah is gone now. I lost him to cancer in old age. Dear, sweet, fun buddy boy.

I have a 3 year old BC now…..who I have also invested a lot of training in and continues the tradition of our walks. So far, she has called off groound squirrels immediately.

I would never use an e-collar for “training”. I do not feel it is right, nor fair to shock a dog if the trainer hasn’t already taught the dog “what to do”….If I didn’t think I could control my dog off leash, I would not allow my dog off leash, as I had not done my job.

Susan asks…

How old to use an electronic training collar?

At what age can I begin using an electronic training collar to work on training my black lab for bird hunting, etc.?

admin answers:

A-er,,,,, I forgot ,,,,, ROFL

What you didn’t say is how old your pup is now.

We use a set program with our dogs starting with ENS at three days of age. Http://www.breedingbetterdogs.com/achiever.html
Then at 5 weeks we start introductions (water, birds, gunfire, etc) before fear memory develops (11-12 weeks)
From 12 weeks through 6 months all training is kept on a fun only basis. It is important during this time not to get heavy handed in any way because the puppy lacks the cognitive skills to understand a correction. The pup is completely food oriented so take advantage of it and cookie train during this time frame. Do easy single marks in the field, and work on the three foundation actions in the yard (sit, kennel, recall)
Between 6-7 months of age the pup will develop a newfound independence and self awareness. This is your signal that the pup is no longer food oriented and has developed other motivations (should not need an explanation). The pup also will have developed the cognitive skills to understand corrections and formal training can now begin with a good “basics” program.
Get either “10 minute retriever” by Amy Dahl, or “Smartworks for retrievers” by Evan Grahm to use for a basics program guide. Both of these books will discuss “collar conditioning” and “proofing” the pups foundation. I proof in reverse order of what the foundation actions were taught, recall first, kennel, and sit last. I also start FF at the same time teaching the delivery (drop) first, then “hold” then “fetch”. Consider 3HC as a conclusion of fetch and you will be on your way to teaching your dog to handle.

Your Questions About Dog Training Boulder

Daniel asks…

Know Anything About The Humane Society?

I have recently filled out an application online for a volunteering job at my local Humane Society? How will I be notified? How long will it take?

admin answers:

It depends entirely on the one you actually went to. At the Boulder Humane Society they have a process. You apply to be a volunteer and then you must attend the volunteer information session, which is posted on the website with date and time. Volunteer apps can be completed online, on paper, before the session or at the session.

Next, you get a phone call within a few days asking you to attend a volunteer interview. They group the volunteer interviews based on which jobs/projects you want to work on at the shelter (kennel assistant versus, say, special events assistant), and at your interview they get some more information on you, you get more information on them, and you find out when the trainings for your area of interest are. So, for a kennel assistant, you’d need to go to the dog or cat center trainings before you can start actually volunteering. For some positions, they have different training or no separate training session (especially ones without any animal contact).

Some of the Boulder HS’s communications are by phone and some are by email.

So for you, go to your local Humane Society’s website and look for information on volunteering, or at least to get the contact number for who to ask. If you can’t find a volunteer coordinator contact, just call the shelter and whomever answers the phone should be able to connect you to the right person to ask.

Mary asks…

What do you hear in nature?

A description of what would you see hear and feel if you spent some time alone in nature.

admin answers:

Having spent a good amount of time hiking in woods and fields around the state of NY, I’ll tell you what I usually hear and feel:
Crunching of leaves as small animals like squirrels sneak around on the ground
The swishing/whispering sound of the wind blowing through the needles of an evergreen tree
The cold, frigid wind blowing south along the Hudson River valley as I was climbing Breakneck Ridge and, a little later, the first warming rays of the sun as it broke over the horizon on that cold November morning.
The sound of my heart pounding as I ran down the other side of this mountain, when there was no one else around.
The sound of a pilated woodpecker hammering on a tree somewhere nearby looking for insects to eat.
The cautious steps of several deer, as they walked farther down the trail, looking at me warily as I walked along the trail and observed them there.
The excited panting of my hiking companion, my german shepherd dog, as he struggles to climb the mountain with me, and the sound of his nails scraping against the rocks and boulders we are climbing.
The low level rumbling and clack clacking of a long freight train slowly making its way south along the tracks on the west side of the Hudson river.
The flapping of an American flag someone has placed at the top of the mountain I am climbing this morning.

Chris asks…

i am looking for the poem ‘the night train’ where can i find it?

this is the night train crossing the border

admin answers:

Night Train (Commentary for a G.P.O. Film, July 1935) by W.H. Auden (1907 – 1973)

This is the Night Mail crossing the border,Bringing the cheque and the postal order,
Letters for the rich, letters for the poor,
The shop at the corner and the girl next door.

Pulling up Beattock, a steady climb:
The gradient’s against her, but she’s on time.

Past cotton-grass and moorland boulder
Shovelling white steam over her shoulder,

Snorting noisily as she passes
Silent miles of wind-bent grasses.

Birds turn their heads as she approaches,
Stare from the bushes at her blank-faced coaches.

Sheep-dogs cannot turn her course;
They slumber on with paws across.

In the farm she passes no one wakes,
But a jug in the bedroom gently shakes.

II

Dawn freshens. Her climb is done.
Down towards Glasgow she descends
Towards the steam tugs yelping down the glade of cranes,
Towards the fields of apparatus, the furnaces
Set on the dark plain like gigantic chessmen.
All Scotland waits for her:
In the dark glens, beside the pale-green sea lochs
Men long for news.

III

Letters of thanks, letters from banks,
Letters of joy from the girl and the boy,
Receipted bills and invitations
To inspect new stock or visit relations,
And applications for situations
And timid lovers’ declarations
And gossip, gossip from all the nations,
News circumstantial, news financial,
Letters with holiday snaps to enlarge in,
Letters with faces scrawled in the margin,
Letters from uncles, cousins, and aunts,
Letters to Scotland from the South of France,
Letters of condolence to Highlands and Lowlands
Notes from overseas to Hebrides
Written on paper of every hue,
The pink, the violet, the white and the blue,
The chatty, the catty, the boring, adoring,
The cold and official and the heart’s outpouring,
Clever, stupid, short and long,
The typed and the printed and the spelt all wrong.

Thousands are still asleep
Dreaming of terrifying monsters,
Or of friendly tea beside the band at Cranston’s or Crawford’s:
Asleep in working Glasgow, asleep in well-set Edinburgh,
Asleep in granite Aberdeen,
They continue their dreams,
And shall wake soon and long for letters,
And none will hear the postman’s knock
Without a quickening of the heart,
For who can bear to feel himself forgotten?

Your Questions About Dog Training

Charles asks…

what is the best dog training book to read for an apbt puppy?

i recently ordered pit bulls for dummies, and will soon acquire a copy of dog training for dummies.

the lady that lives downstairs from me gave me a book titled ‘Smarter than you Think’ and it tells you to throw things at your dog to teach it to come, and to stick a match in its butt to poop, and not trust dog food companies, and all this weird stuff, not too sure about that book.

any other suggestions? or tips?

admin answers:

When I had just got my APBT I went to my local library’s site and in the keyword box i put Pit Bull and it came up with alot of good books that were really useful so try looking up your library. They have alot of info on APBTs. Good luck

William asks…

What to put on a dog training registration form?

i have a little dog training business and i use to have this form on hand but it has somehow gone missing. i know what information i need from the owners and what not but i cant remember what i put in the release/waiver at the bottom. any ideas?

admin answers:

I would employ an attorney to draft the release language for you. In today’s society, people will sue you for just about anything. You want to be as well-protected as possible in case there is a mishap and a dog or person is injured or killed (so, not only making sure the release language is legally sound, but also carrying an appropriate amount of liability insurance for your business). To me, it is worth the expenditure to have something professionally done that is specific to your business in instances like this.

Your Questions About Dog Training Boulder

Carol asks…

is a 5 month old American Staffordshire Terrior to young to take running or on hikes?

admin answers:

No really, but what you are going to want to do is start to condition your dog. Taking him out now on an eight mile hike or 45 minute run is going to stress him out! Start slow – Begin a training regime by running or walking your dog around your
neighborhood increasing the distance as your dog gets in shape.

Remember that your pup is still developing, and he’s going to have to go go go attitude known in his breed 😉 It will be up to you to make sure he doesn’t over do it.

Don’t let the pace get too strenuous and while on those hikes don’t let him jump over a lot of logs and boulders (keep the joint stress down)

Also make sure you warm him up and cool him down before and after – and stretching is a must!

Sandra asks…

Why can’t people see things in a logical manner?

In this country there are over 5 million, it’s one of the most populer breeds and as been for over 100 years, with only 556 deaths in the past 15 years due to dog attacks and those being caused by 56 breeds why do people think that there is danderous pit bulls around every conner. This should prove that most pits are owned by people who take the time to train and keep thier pet pits the right way. If they were as bad as what the news and others make them to be then there would be a death by them everyday and a whole lot more attacks. Over 5 million, you have better odds of getting killed by lighting or attacked by a shark than by a pit bull. I las Vegas there as been no deaths caused by pits for over 20 years and only 5 bad attacks. We have a huge dog fighting problem in N. Las Vegas would you not think our numbers would be higher. These numbers include las vegas, N Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, Nellis air forice base, Puramp, and Mopa
That is 15 years not 100 sorry

admin answers:

Media hype and knee-jerk reactions by people (including politicians) who don’t understand the problem at all.

Discrimination and banning breeds is not the answer. Ask your local lawmakers to pass laws to prosecute the owners of any dog that is allowed to run loose. If someone has a vicious dog of any pure or mixed breed and it menaces or bites someone, that owner should be punished the same way as if he left a loaded gun lying around and a child shot himself with it – make it a major felony!

Physically, almost any dog is capable of killing a child. Even a Golden retriever accidentally killed a child this past winter – the child was sent out to play wearing a scarf. Tragically, the dog thought this was for him to play tug-of-war with and the child died of strangulation.

Nancy asks…

What’s the best dog training book? When’s a good age to begin training commands?

I just got a puppy and I am wondering what is the best dog training book available. I am looking for one that teaches me how to teach obedience and some trick that is an easy read. I am the owner of an adorable boxer puppy. Also, if anyone knows, whats a good age to start training. Shes almost 8 weeks and I am working on the sit command with treats but she seems to have no interest. She gets way to distracted. Thanks.

admin answers:

She’s still pretty young–it’s illegal to take a pup away from her mother before age 8-10 weeks. You’re starting out right with the “sit” command. Take some time and go to a book store and look at training books. Even one of those yellow and black “Dummie” books would be good, I bet. I don’t know if there is one for training dogs, but they have them for eveything else.

Your Questions About Dog Training Books

Sandra asks…

Does anyone have any puppy training tips?

I have a 10 week old GoldenDoodle named Eilidh (AYlee). She’s very sweet and I recently had to put a dog down for aggression. I don’t want to make any mistakes this time. I have a dog training book (Dog Training Made Easy) but I would like to know of any other tips to train her the right way. We have been very careful not to smack her when she’s “naughty” and we just yell “NO” in a harsh voice.

She’s still not potty trained but we’ve only had her two weeks and she goes outside most of the time. When she does go inside, I know it’s because WE aren’t paying attention.

I guess what I’m asking is the proper way to punish her when she’s eating my rug, or a shoe, or one of the kids toys. Right now we just say “NO” and give her one of her “Good girl toys.”. Any ideas?
Also, I was told by my vet that she shouldn’t go to puppy training classes until she is 15 weeks, after all of her shots. Will that be too late?

admin answers:

Its not too early to start on the sit-stay and down- stay and come.. When she begins chewing, give her any of the above commands, and be persistant about her doing it..that way, when you do give her a treat, it is for a job well done…It also shows her that when she tries to create her own job, that you have a better one for her..
The Basics
SIT, COME, DOWN, STAY, HEEL.

SIT

Holding a treat in your left hand just above the pup’s nose, gently rest your right hand on pup’s rump.
Slowly move the treat in an upward motion while applying gentle pressure to the rump. ( you don’t want to push hard because if you do the dog will sit every time someone touches him and this is not good for competitive obedience)
as soon as pup sits say in a very happy excited tone “GOOD SIT” and give the treat.
Repeat exercise 7x. Then take a play break and move on to something else.
Very young pups should not train for more than a half hour each day
every time you put food bowl down or give a treat give the sit command, and wait for the sit. Then once pup sits give treat or food down.
DO NOT move on to something new until pup has the new command down pat.

COME

walk away from pup about 10 feet to start. Say pup’s name and “COME” in a happy voice. Once pup comes praise it lavishly have a bit of a play and give it a treat.
Gradually increase the distance you walk away. And eventually once pup knows command only treat every 3rd come. Tapering off until he comes every time with out treat using only praise.
This will take a few days to learn if you practice every day.

DOWN

Start with pup in sit. Move hand with the treat between the pup’s front paws on the ground.
Say “DOWN” in firm but not loud voice.
Pup might try and get treat without going down, don’t let him have it until he downs.
Praise in happy voice “GOOD DOWN”
repeat 7x

STAY

Start pup in down position. Say “STAY” in firm voice. Walk to end of leash, backwards. If the pup moves say once only “AP” in a not pleased tone. Go back do not say anything. Put pup in down again repeat “STAY” walk backwards to end of leash.
Pup does NOT get praise or treat until he stays for 30 seconds, then a minute, then 5 minutes. Move times up each week.
After he can do a 5 minute down/stay every time. Move on to a sit/stay doing exactly what you did for down/stay.
Once on leash sit and down/stays are reliable for 5 minutes each. Drop the leash and walk away from your pup, your back to the pup. About 10 feet away. Wait 5 min. Recall your dog. With dog sitting in front of you once he reaches you. Treat and praise.

HEEL

Please do NOT train with a choke collar. I recommend martingayles .
With dog on a short leash exactly beside you on your left side say “HEEL” if the dog starts to pull give a correction snap with leash on collar. And recommend “HEEL” the second your dog complies praise with “GOOD HEEL” in happy voice. And continue to walk , correct, and praise for 30 minutes.

Always end training sessions on a positive note. Never get angry with your pup for not responding to a command. Praise lavishly every time pup responds to a command.

Linda asks…

How can I train my dog not to bark at visitors?

I have a 9 month old shih-tzu, and every time someone knocks at the door, or when she hears something that resembles knocking, she barks up a storm. This wouldn’t be so bad, except that when I have company over (not too often) she acts afraid of the person, barking at them and hiding in her crate. She is otherwise socialized, and when we see people outside of my home (like on walks, in the park, etc.) she is fine. I know this is probably because I live alone, she rarely sees visitors except for my boyfriend (who she adores) and she is protecting her territory. But how can I get her to accept visitors?

I have read many dog behavior/training books, but none have taught me how to deal with this problem.

admin answers:

It is natural for a dog to watch out and bark when someone comes close – at least persons whom it does not know. If it barks all the time, also at people it knows – it is a problem. It is not sure you are able to protect good enough.

I had a dog once – I tried a “catastrophy-bag” (…)… Which consisted of coke-cans with small coins in it which I threw after him a couple of times when barking. It helped for as long as I had the bag in my hand. I also had a collar which squished out lemon-squirt every time he barked. I tell you; he barked and he got 10 squirts with lemon right in his mouth. Did not help. Only thing that helped was work, work and work. Making him understand I was the boss over all bosses… : ) Here’s what I did:

You will have to teach it you are in charge. The way to do this is to walk it every day – with leach or without if you really are in charge. Enter rooms first – dog second allways. Say hi to persons in room allways before dog. Let other persons say hi to you before your dog – allways. Eat first – dog last, allways. Never feed when you eat and sertainly not at table…

Good luck

Can any one tell me of any dog training books

admin answers:

The dog listener by jan fennell is great and she has done quite a few books on training and understanding dogs. If you want to do more than just basic traning and go that step further then i think expert obedience training for dogs by winifred strickland is also great. You can go onto amazon and buy them for much less than in the shops plus lots of pet shops only sell books for training like sit, stay etc.

Your Questions About Dog Training Colorado

George asks…

Is Colorado a good home for a Siberian husky?

I’m getting a siberian husky and I live in castle rock Colorado. I was wondering if tht is a good home for a husky. I want the dog to be happy to 🙂 thnx!

admin answers:

The climate is totally fine for a Siberian, realize, though, that these dogs are working and racing dogs so just because they like the temperature doesn’t mean that they are happy.

Your dog will need to RUN several times a day and will never be trustworthy off a leash in an unfenced area. Siberians also have more primitive tendencies like a higher prey drive, pack-oriented nature but not easy obedience training, and more tendency to perceive and exploit weaknesses in other pack members and pack leaders.

Siberians are wonderful dogs, look up Skijoring and X-Joring as two possible ways to work off all of that energy or sign up for obedience, agility, or flyball classes in your area for help with training, socialization, and exercise needs.

Good luck!

Paul asks…

What dog breed would be right for me?

Saile wants a big dog that is reasonable to train at a young age, can be used for bird hunting as well as tracking imposters on a few acres of land, is fun to play with even if it plays mean, has to do well in the kind of weather and temperatures that occur every season in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Most importantly of all, it has to make a good companion for his owner and can be trained to like his friends and family and possibly be a little meaner to a few certain people.

admin answers:

First of all, think about which type of dogs you like and find attractive. Then you decide, which dog would serve your purposes and how much you are willing or able to spend. Dogs with papers can be very expensive. Sometimes you get good deals from ASPCA. The other thing that it’s very important to train the dog in all the areas you mention. You could do it yourself or better yet, if you can have a trainer do it. Also look at the dog’s physical and emotional condition, and if possible how was he treated by his/her previous owner. Also consider the dog’s age in order to determine his/her life expectancy The age would also determine what type of training would be most appropriate

In terms of dogs I especially like St Bernards, German Shepherd , Doberman, Great Dane, Alaskan Huskies. Good Luck and enjoy,

Mandy asks…

Im 16 and I am considering a future with educating special needs children, I have a few questions?

I remember in elementary school across from my 4th grade classroom was the special kids class and a few times a week, the teacher would bring her two corgi’s in and of course I was jealous because I LOVE dogs(I’m very experienced with dogs, and I’d be a vet but I’m not as good at science as I think I am :)). So I was wondering if the school would allow me to bring a dog to work for the kids?

Also, how much schooling do I need to work with special needs children? I would want to work with elementary school aged children.

What is teaching and working with special need children like (how many children are in a class, etc)?

I know that this job can be very challenging and requires loads of patience and understanding (not just with the kids, parents too haha) because I babysit a 10 year old boy with autism and help him with his homework every school day and sometimes weekends, I also just did a research report on autism, but only working with Brandon allowed me to fully understand the disorder. Any stories of your experiences would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

admin answers:

I’m a special education teacher. I started out taking care of a boy who had autism like you did, then while I was in college I started working for a company that aided people with cognitive disabilities in obtaining and training for jobs. I later worked for a company where I worked one on one with people with disabilities. I moved to another state and began my master’s degree in Special Education and worked in a public school system also with people with cognitive disabilities. When I graduated with my degree I got a job in Colorado in a room working with Behavior Disorder children. I currently still have that job.

So, here is my advice to you. If you don’t like paper work do not become a teacher, become an aide or para. Second, be understanding that the field of education encompasses many disabilities. Either you hold out for the job you really want or you’re flexible with what you want to do! My paras work with the kids more than I do. You will have long days, be abused by children, parents, and administration to varying degrees. Often times you do not do as much help as you’d like to do. It’s very overwhelming and often your aides are incompetent. I’m not trying to say don’t do it, but don’t romanticize the job or think it’s “sweet” to help the poor little disabled children. Don’t romanticize disabilities either.

Hi James,
This animal shelter in Denver has great dog training instructions! You can find it for free on their website here: http://www.ddfl.org/education/dog-behavior-tips/training-your-dog

You might also ask for vet for ideas or call your local animal shelter. They will be able to tell you where to find local dog training classes if you need them.

Good luck! Labs are sweet but also energetic so you are super smart to be thinking about training!

Mark asks…

i am 16 and live in denver colorado i need a job! anyone knows places that are hiring?!?

admin answers:

Nursing Homes, Home Assisted Living Places. I worked through a Church when I was 16 & did In Home Health Care/Companionship for the elderly.
It was pretty neat, I traveled to peoples homes, did light dusting & cooking for them, some grocery shopping & walked their dogs for them….Basically everything that they couldn’t do for themselves around the house, bring in the mail, shovel the walk way…it was kinda fun cause everyday was different, never knew what they needed until I got there. One lady just liked me to have tea with her & water her plants while I listened to her stories, she was pretty lonely.
But I got paid by the hour.
In order to do it I had to take a CPR Class & get some first Aide Medical Emergency Training that the Church paid for. I didn’t have a car yet at the time so I took the bus or my Mom dropped me off.

Guitar Songs for 2 people?

My friend and I are in a guitar class. We are doing an end of the year concert, but we do not have any idea what songs to play. We are using pieces of crap nylon stringed guitars, so distorted guitar songs don’t work. We are intermediate guitar players, but we also have to sing. So easy, short songs, without a lot of vocals would be ideal.

Why would you want to play DISTORTED sounds on a NYLON STRING CLASSICAL GUITAR? You sould KNOW that CLASSICAL guitars DON’T HAVE PEDALS. These VOCALS work well with Guitar OR Piano

Your Questions About Dog Training Boulder

Nancy asks…

La Costa / Encinitas – Where do you go to let your dog off leash?

We recently moved to back to Encinitas from Colorado and can only find two places in Encinitas/La Costa that allow off leash dogs: Orpheus Park and Viewpoint Park. But those parks are only during certain hours on certain dates. We are used to taking our well trained, well socialized dog to any number of dog parks in Boulder. My dog is very active and needs exercise everyday! So are there any unofficial areas that people take their dogs? Thanks

admin answers:

Go to dog beach in Del Mar or Coronado!

Ken asks…

where are some good places to hike with my dog around Denver metro area?

We like moderate level hiking and enjoy 3 to 5 mile long total (round trip)

admin answers:

Wow – where to start. If you want to hike in the city, go to any bike store and get a copy of the Denver Bicycle Touring Club map. Highline, Cherry Creek and Bear Creek are some of my favorites. Do keep the dog on a fairly short leash, bring a poop bag, and listen for bikes. Nothing worse than zipping along at 15 miles an hour and see a dog on one side and the owner on the other with a leash between them.

If you want more mountain hiking, try Jeffco Open Space. They have dozens of great hiking trails from moderate to steep, but again on leash please. Http://jeffco.us/openspace/index.htm

My favorite are the Boulder Off Leash parks. Your dog must be obedience trained and have a special tag but Boulder has miles of great trails where you can legally walk off leash with the dog. Http://www.bouldercolorado.gov/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3051&Itemid=411

Richard asks…

where should you not go in las vegas with family/children?

any advice to stay away from encounters with prostitutes, gamblers, druggies, majorly drunk guys/women? we have young children and we’re going to vegas for the first time and im kinda concerned.

admin answers:

First…YES…my advice IS to have your kids/family stay away from prostitutes, gambling (well too much!), druggies(?), and majorly drunk people!!!

You would typically only encounter those people within the casino bars where any ‘working girls’ typically hang and when/where you’ll find any ‘excessively’ drunk people (bars/nightclubs are also in that proximity…but you, or at least your ‘young children’ will either be asleep, in your room, or somewhere else other than the casino area at that time anyway: clubs open at 10pm at the earliest!)
The ‘cards’ that are handed out along the sidewalks of Las Vegas Blvd (the strip) are easy to intercept. The private parts covered up in bikinis/stars/etc and 99.?% of the time are only handed out to ADULTS or large kids that look close to 18. They don’t want parents punching them out, or legal problems (The mayor’s been fighting them legally for years!).

“!” have been raising two very moral young boys in Henderson/Las Vegas just fine (I’ve lived here for nearly 20 years!). Granted we don’t hang out in casinos though we have gone to their pools, shows, shopping centers, Secret Garden, Gameworks, Circus Circus, etc…all the places you would be going. You will be fine.

I WOULD say, avoid the front of the Riviera hotel, but you have no reason to go there, nothing kid oriented at that property at all. (It has sculptures of women’s backsides sticking out of the exterior wall, advertising their ‘Crazy Girls’ show.) and you should probably avoid the Mandalay Bay’s restaurant/dining section (the furthest side) where there is a sculpture of a woman’s bust sticking out of the wall (many tourists, men AND women, pose next to it). Beyond that, and trying to sneak them into a nightclub/bar…you should be fine EVERYWHERE ELSE in town.

Next…I’ll start with clearing up the ‘false’ info others have given out…

*****Drinking is legal, just as everywhere else in America,..only for those over 21, NOT in ANY vehicle…and NOT in a backseat(!) of any vehicle. It is also illegal, just as with any other city in the USA, to be excessively intoxicated/drunk in public. The ONLY place walking down the street while drinking is allowed…is along the strip between the resort properties (The Strip)…anywhere else, ILLEGAL.
*****Prostitution is NOT LEGAL in Las Vegas…not even within Clark County which contains Las Vegas & “the Strip”. (The closest county where prostitution is legal is 45 mins -1 hour away).
*****Circus Circus is NOT the only hotel setup with stuff for kids…

Beyond that…
Vegas has TONS of things for kids…depending on their ages…here’s a LIST of “Family Friendly Stuff” in Vegas….

Shark Reef (Mandalay Bay) (again, watchout for the wall sculpture, it’s easy to block once you know it’s there…LOL)
The Lion King show/play (Mandalay Bay)
Wildlife Habitat at the Flamingo (Flamingo Hotel across from Caesar’s)
“The magic and tigers of Rick Thomas”…(Sahara)
The Secret Garden…(Siegfried & Roy! So LIVE dolphins, tigers, lions, and more!)
Madame Tussauds Las Vegas…(Venetian)
The rides at the Stratosphere, for the bravest amongst you!
Visiting the Hoover Dam as a family is an excellent idea…(Hoover Dam, Boulder City, NV)
and OF COURSE…experiencing Circus Circus..their Adventure Dome rides, shows etc are a great fun time!

Extra/Bonus ideas…
***Gregory Popovich’s Comedy Pet Theater (Starts around $10/ticket…very funny, trained dogs and Cats!…that he has rescued from shelters!) We have booked this show for a corporate event of all adults (Vet industry!) and they loved it and were Amazed!)…(Planet Hollywood)
***Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden…(Mirage Hotel) The white tigers (two new tiger cubs!), white Lions(!), dolphins, etc should not be missed by any kids visiting Vegas!
***Don’t forget the pools…the only place(s) that can beat Vegas Hotel Pools…are ‘some’ water parks..and some properties here have up to 5 pools inter-laced with lazy rivers (bring your own inflatable tubes/rafts and save some good bucks…don’t blow them up till your in the pool area, easier to carry and won’t count as luggage on a plane! LOL!!!
***Gameworks for kids into video games and ‘party food’ stuff (Just outside of the MGM Grand)
***Coca Cola world next to the M&M world! (Just outside of the MGM Grand)
&
***”IF” you are a “daring” group of family members…you could try “Vegas Indoor Skydiving”…it’s NOT CHEAP…but a VERY Unique experience!

Your Questions About Dog Training Books

John asks…

How train puppy not to jump up?

I have a 3 mos old puppy have trained to sit, stay, come, go to kennel etc, but do you have any ideas on how to train him not to jump up on people besides telling me to buy a dog training book?
I am looking for specific ideas that worked for you.

admin answers:

UUURRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!

This question is asked so many times, and I am SO SICK of people recommending leash corrections, kneeing the dog in the chest, and hitting. Besides being unneccesary and ineffective, have any of you ever tried to knee a 3 month old pup in the chest? Unless you are about three feet tall, ain’t gonna happen!

Now that I have vented…this is soooooo simple. No one pets the dog unless he is sitting (or at least standing) first. If he jumps, turn around and walk away. If he sits and then you reach to pet him and he starts to jump again, turn and walk away. He wants attention…he will learn very quickly what he needs to do to get attention from people. The hardest part is not going to be training your pup, it’s going to be getting other people to comply. Make them! If necessary, ask them to have the pup sit so they can give him a treat and then pet him. They will be more amenable if they believe they are helping you train him to sit.

Mark asks…

How do you stop a puppy from barking?

Our black lab/golden retriever puppy is about 16 weeks old. We bought a dog training book that says to hold a treat up to his nose because they can’t bark and sniff at the same time when he is barking. But that is not working because he might think he is being praised. What do you suggest we do?

admin answers:

NEVER EVER BEAT THE DOG, OR HIT IT when it barks or else it will turn aggressive. I know alot about dogs, and usually you ignore the dog or look at them straight in the eyes and say no in a stern voice and then ignore them but don’t put them in a time-out, because their cage is eathier their home, or when they crap in the house. Just ignore the dog because all they want is attention and that’s why they’re barking or because they’re trying to protect their property! GOOD LUCK! Contact me if you have any questions at shopacholic009@yahoo.com

Richard asks…

Can any one tell me of any dog training books?

Can any one tell me of any dog training books

admin answers:

I’ve tried various dog training books which are ok but through experience the best method is to go to puppy traing classes where the pups can socialise with other dogs. You also learn and it is like a good workout when you take part. You also meet friends with similar interests

Your Questions About Dog Training Classes Denver

Ruth asks…

looking for a dog training school in east haven, CT need major help!!?

im looking for a school near my home (east haven connecticut) to become a dog trainer (mostly for aggression behavior) but as im googling i keep getting these lame online schools and places too far away or dog training places that doesnt train to become a dog trainer . im getting really frustrated and think they need to better the search engines. so i come to ask you guys for help. if you offer training or know a place that does that would help so much!! thanks !!

admin answers:

We are in VA and we recently purchased a franchise called Bark Busters. It is an At-Home Dog Training Company and it is the largest in the world. If you decide to join, you go to Denver Colorado for training for three weeks, after which you become Dog Behavior Specialist. After a year, you return for a one week class and then become a Master Dog Behavior Specialist. If you are interested, the website is www.Barkbusters.com.

Hope this helps!

James asks…

How are your New Year’s resolutions for your dog coming?

A couple of months ago, I asked this question.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ap35p0OUSN3Xl7J0jPh.Hgzty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071227144926AAlJc9W

Did anyone have any goals for this year with his/her dogs that is making good progress?

I said Miss would become my first agility dog. Next week we’re going to sign up for the class.

I still plan on giving a “thank you” donation to the shelter I adopted her from, but now I have to save some money for agility.

I’m still working on finding a better vet.

“Some raw meaty bones” became a switch to a complete raw diet, and she’s doing GREAT!

“I will STOP buying crap for her. She’s a DOG.”
That one’s tough.

I haven’t joined the ASPCA, but I did join a local dog training club. I’m getting more involved in dog showing and training.

How is everyone else doing?

admin answers:

Well I still haven’t found a trainer to try and start an obedience class in our rinky-dink town, but I’m still trying. I have started working my two dogs in the conformation ring. One finished her UKC Ch and is now starting on her AKC. The other one went to the Rocky Mtn. Cluster in Denver, and placed first in his class two of the days, so he’s off to a good start. As for all the loves yeah, that’s working out great. Still not getting very far with getting them ready to get their CGC’s yet though. I really need to buckle down on that.

Richard asks…

which is better?a german shepherd or a siberian husky?and why?

i cant decide between the 2..
ive read that huskies actually are temperament and that they arent really good guard dogs, and i dont need my dog trying to run away whenever possible.
i live in denver colorado
huskies look more cooler, but german shepherds are more intelligent..
thanks for that insignificant answer john, kudos on that one!
and i need facts on which is better.im not just going for looks ya know..
in response to dog judge,i live in denver colorado, which is ideal for the husky, but again, temper is a problem, and also shedding,umm..i am an outside person, and dog weight has no problem at all
yes and huskies tend to run away,as all dogs but thats their instince right?outdoors..
and in the summer it gets hot round 80-110 F any given day.and in the winter it snows like no tomorrow and temps get low roughly bout 10-40 F

admin answers:

You could get a list a foot long here.

Put up more information. Where do you live, what do you like to do, inside or outside person, dog weight issues.

We don’t need to convince you, you need to decide what you’re looking for.

Update – I had two Huskies and I’ve had LOTS of German Shepherds in obedience classes. For a lot of reasons, Huskies are healthier. Smaller dog, fewer structural problems. Either dog could tolerate the Denver climate. Both dogs shed, and although Huskies shed more, I don’t think that it’s really a make or break issue. Huskies are renown for running when loose because they are SLED DOGS! With proper training, you can overcome this, but it’s an issue that will need to be addressed. GSDs are more trainable for a novice. I would lean toward the Husky because of the health issues (hips in particular). That being said, if you decide to go after a GSD make sure that you do all of your homework about hips. Both parents and as many other relatives as possible MUST be OFA certified. If not, find another breeder. Hips are not that much of an issue with Huskies for a lot of reasons.

Your Questions About Dog Training Collars

Thomas asks…

How do I extend the range of a wireless transmitter?

I have a dog training shock/vibrating collar. While training dogs I use it to curb bad habits, problem is it’s supposed to have a one mile range, but in reality it only seems to work from about 30 feet, is there a way to boost my signal? Can I get or build a stronger antenna or something?

admin answers:

It’s a sign, that you should train dogs in a more appropriate manner.

Daniel asks…

Can I use 120v power adapter in Australia?

I bought a Petsafe remote dog training collar from Ebay (America) but I live in Australia. On the power adapter/charger it says the input 120v Output 9vdc 6.5w. Australia’s power supply is 240v. Can I just plug it into an Australian power point? I have the plug converter but not a power converter.

admin answers:

NO. It will burn out. Might even burn up.

You need a transformer-type voltage converter. Try Dick Smith Electronics.

Another possibility (also at DSE) is to get a 9vdc adapter, 1 amp or so capacity, that will run from 240 volts. It’ll be much cheaper. (second link)

Lisa asks…

What is the difference between Dog Training Collars & Dog Tracking Collars?

Looking for difference between dog training and Dog tracking collars…..

admin answers:

A dog Training collar is used to assist in teaching your dog certain behaviors. Choke chains, head collars, shock collars, and grip collars are all used to modify your dog’s behavior (either positively or negatively) or gain control over a particularly stubborn, strong, or possibly dangerous dog.

A Tracking collar helps locate your dog in the event it gets lost, and some even consider reflective collars tracking collars, as they help locate and identify your dog, whether you’re just out walking at night, hunting, or he gets lost amid a group of dogs that look similar. 🙂

Hope this clears things up!!

Your Questions About Dog Training

Ruth asks…

What website should I visit to find a therapy dog training program for my pekingese-poodle when he gets older?

So far, I am not finding a straightforward website that will allow me to find local therapy dog training programs.

I know I need to first determine if he has aptitude for this line of work.

If he has aptitude for it, I would like him to be able to visit nursing homes for example but he has to obtain credentials from a program first.

admin answers:

The top three therapy dog programs in the US are:

http://deltasociety.org
http://tdi-dog.org
http://therapydogs.com

Each of those sites tell you about their specific program, including information on what is required for testing and registration with them, when and where tests and courses are offered, and how to find affiliate clubs. If you don’t find what you want on the website, use the contact information to ask your questions. I’ve had the best luck with Delta, especially with them responding to questions, so that’s the one I recommend personally.

If you have a specific hospital or nursing home you’d like to visit, ask them what there requirements are. Some only accept therapy teams registered with a specific organization, while others just want the team registered and insured with someone. It would be a shame to test and register with organization “A” only to discover the facility you wish to visit only accepts registrations from organization “B.” Again, if you have a specific facility in mind, they probably already have visiting therapy pet teams and can put you in touch with that group. You can then learn from those teams what it is like visiting that facility, where to get tested, where to get registered, and how to prepare.

As far as aptitude goes, first and foremost he has to be friendly and well behaved. He shouldn’t pester people who don’t want to interact with him nor shy away from those who do. He should enjoy all kinds of people and all kinds of petting, even by clumsy hands. Some people may look, sound, or smell “funny.” He needs to be the sort of dog who would be just as happy cuddling with a school mascot or a kid in a wheelchair as the average person on the street. He needs basic obedience (walking politely on a leash, sit/down/stay, coming when called, leaving things alone (such as food trays or medication), etc. He needs to be good around other dogs as well. If he has the right personality, the rest can be added with socialization (introduction to lots and lots of different kinds of people) and basic training.

— edited to add —

Therapy dog training doesn’t have to start at an early age. If the dog is well adjusted and well mannered as a pet something as little as an 8 week training course can be sufficient to prepare him for testing. Yes, it is important to socialize puppies, ALL puppies (pet, therapy, etc.) at a young age, but it is not necessary to begin training to become a therapy dog at any particular age. I’ve seen 8 year old dogs prepare and take the test for the first time in their lives and pass and go on to be lovely therapy dogs.

Socialization = introducing them to lots and lots of different kinds of people and other pets

Jenny asks…

I heard about this dog training called super dog training is it any good?

I heard about this dog training called super dog training is it any good?
I want to teach my dog basic commands and no leash training?
I am in California.

admin answers:

I checked out their site. No substance. Just a bunch of dogs (the same ones mostly) on group stay commands. Nothing super, nothing special. A bunch of old tired sayings that have nothing to do with dog training.
I am sure you can find a good local trainer to teach you to train your dog to do the same exact things for a fraction of the price.

Daniel asks…

Is it possible to make your own dog training spray?

Is it possible to make your own dog training spray that doesn’t include chemicals?
I would like a natural spray that I can use that will repel him from furnature and clothes. Would lemons work without harming the dog?

admin answers:

Lemons might work but Bitter Apple spray from Vets and some pet stores definitely does and doesn’t include chemicals, but is expensive at £10 a bottle. Trained my dog off the furniture and to stop bad behaviour indoors and now only have to pick up the bottle to get a reaction. It doesn’t matter if it gets on the dog (in fact can be used for excessive fur biting that some dogs do) but avoid eyes (obviously).
Hope this info helps. Incidentally, my dog likes the smell of lemons.

Chris asks…

What are the reasons why people ride bicycles?

What are the reasons why people ride bicycles?

admin answers:

1. Riding a bike is liberating in that I-still-feel-like-a-kid sort of way, and I’m not trapped in a metal/glass/infernal combustion coffin looking at the world through wide-screen television eyes. And parking is always free on a bike. And my bike starts every morning, even in cold weather.

–Hurl Everstone of Minneapolis is the publisher of Cars R Coffins, a Web site devoted to bicycle-punkrock-action.

2. Without cycling, I’d die consuming the quantities of beer that I do. I also ride for the scenery. And what other opportunity do I have for stuffing 250 pounds into too-small Lycra bib shorts?

–Matt Wiebe, a Santa Fe resident, University of New Mexico professor and technical editor of Bicycle Retailer and Industry News

3. I ride because it gives me an excuse for shaving my legs. If it weren’t for the six bikes in the garage, I’d be forever trying to explain why I look like a bearded lady on the lam from a carnival sideshow who got her head shaved in the drunk tank after flunking a cootie inspection. Plus when I’m stuck for something obnoxious to write or draw, a quick ride helps jar the nickel loose and set the music to playing. That, and the drugs.

–Patrick O’Grady, a professional rumormonger living in Colorado who vents periodically on this site and at www.maddogmedia.com.

4. While pedaling over hill and dale, people usually notice and often talk to me. Because of this I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly. Like a Southern Baptist song, the good has overcome. This has been the best reason of all for bicycling. I’m approachable when on a bike. It’s fun talking to kids and strangers about a sport and way of life that I love. Humanity awakens at the sight of a two-wheeled traveler.

–Loretta Esparza is a seven-year veteran of Salsa Cycles and a dog-lovin’ barista in California.

5. To coalesce the burning pure horrific rage as you face knuckleheads, debutantes and four-wheeled freaks in traffic.

–Bob Roll calls himself “a man barely alive.” A veteran of the 7-Eleven team, the first U.S. Pro squad to tackle the Tour de France, he is the author of several books and a cycling commentator on the Outdoor Life Network.

6. Your ass. As in, if you ride a bike your butt ends up looking fairly tight — like two VW Beetles parking.

–Joe Lindsey of Boulder, Colorado, has been riding and racing bikes for 15 years, and covering the sport for the past six for cycling magazines. He’s covered the Tour de France, the Olympics and numerous World Cups and world championships. He enjoys photography, telemark skiing and Britney Spears videos with the sound turned off.

7. Riding a bike has always been a major symbol of independence and freedom. But the real reasons I go out and pound the pedals are sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll.
Sex: As the gap to geezerhood closes, stayin’ in shape for my favorite activity becomes even more important.
Drugs: A long time ago I realized that maintaining my awesome boy-toy bod while enjoying my modest beer habit was going to require a lot more exercise than it did in my studly youth.
Rock ‘n roll: While my guitar skills have never surpassed the mediocre stage, the stuff I play in my head when I ride is awesome. Just give me the steady rhythm of my fixed gear, some open road and turn it to 11, Jimi, ’cuz today we’re gonna rock!

–Ross Shafer lives with his wife, Mari, on the Rockin’ Bar L ranch in Petaluma, California. He is the founder and former owner of Salsa Cycles and owns and operates Six-Nine Design, which provides product design, prototyping, fabrication and tool design services.

8. Some people train so they can race; I race so I can train, so the all-important workout doesn’t get shoved to the back burner so easily. Nothing inspires like knowing you’re going to get your butt kicked in the next race if you don’t train. The fact that I get my butt kicked anyway is completely beside the point.

–Jef Mallett, a former bike racer and current triathlete and cartoonist. His strip, “Frazz,” appears in 150 newspapers across America.

9. My wife, Natasha, thinks cycling is great way to spend time as a family while burning a few calories. For her, the family ride is quality time. Then again, she does not have the trailer with 50 or so stuffed animals and the 2-year-old singing “Old McDonald” attached to her bike as we climb what must be Mont Ventoux. Hmm … Now that I think about it, cycling is the best way to burn a bazillion calories and hang with the family.

–John Kibodeaux, a 16-year veteran of bicycle retail, owns High Desert Bicycles in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and also works full time for his daughter, Marguerite. He has a B.A. From St. John’s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and a Ph.D. In dirty diapers, Sesame Street and anything Disney.

10. I live and breathe bike transportation. Does that make me a granola-crunching, world-saving utopian? Actually, my riding has a lot to do with what’s good for me. Riding makes me healthy. It saves me time.

Susan asks…

Looking for the name of this childrens train video?

All I can remember from this video from my childhood was, it was, there was a red steam engine, white puppy dog with brown spots, and a little tug boat that rides with the train in a bathtub. I remember one scene where they were trying to catch a big boulder in the little tugboats bathtub which they did and the train ended up becoming a runaway.

Your Questions About Dog Training

Paul asks…

Where can I find a business partner for dog training business?

I want to start a dog training business with a facility and everything that specializes in aggression rehabilitation. The problem is I don’t have enough experience in aggression. This is why I need a business partner who does. Anyone know where to find one? or is interested? I have a lot of experience with dogs and all animals for that matter and I am very professional. Someone please help. I am in Northern VA if anyone is interested.

admin answers:

First – you need to find someone to take you on as a dog training apprentice.

Then once you have spent 5-7 years learning about aggression and dog behaviour, then you are going to want to take a few business courses, so that you can run a facility like that.

The best trainers in the world are not going to partner with someone who doesn’t know much. They don’t want to be stuck doing all the work.

Make yourself more valuable to them by educatingg yourself to the hilt. Go to seminars, trials, train dogs at the shelter. Make a name for yourself first.

Word travels by mouth in the dog world – so you build your rep first – then people will be searching you out and not the other way around.

Good luck!

Carol asks…

What are some of the most effective dog training books to used? Which ones are the best?

I’m trying to buy a good dog training book so I can train my dog at home. There are so many I don’t know which ones would be the best to get. So if you’ve ever used a dog training book, let me know what you thought about it.

admin answers:

Two MUST read books for you are Dog Problem: Gentle and modern solutions by David Weston and The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell. I once asked this question on a forum and got some good answers here is the link if you want to check it out: http://www.dogforums.com/2-general-dog-forum/35912-need-your-guy-s.html

ETA: I would stay away from the Koehler Training book, I just read it and its appauling. In general stay away from books that focus on negative training.

Also I’m finding that there is a very large price difference between the UK available products and the products available direct from Chine. Where would be the best place to purchase it from. I have an 8 month old very lovable but naughty Weimaraner. “Casper”. The kids and I have sought of given him to much of a good thing and now he is getting out of hand Eg when asked to get off the sofa, he likes to show his pearly white teeth.

They are very effective. You just remotely deliver the static deterrent when he starts to get onto the sofa. Usually they are used for more serious issues than a dog being on a sofa though.
I love the range collar invisible fence product. It works better than any other fencing product. I have never used a shock collar as a training device because my only big dogs are goldens which train so easily.
I don’t think I would ever order a product directly from China though. I would pay extra to get it locally.
