Can a collie’s ears be fully pricked like a german shepherd?
This may sound like a strange question, but we had a dog who looked to be full blood(smooth)collie, but had pricked ears leading me to believe she wasn’t a purebreed. We found her as a stray.
Yes, it does matter…I’ve always wondered if she was purebreed or not :)! Don’t worry, I believe in spaying/neutering.
Thank you all for your great answers, I’m so excited to find out they can because it means it is possible to get another dog like her. She was the best dog in the world(to me) :).

Your Questions About Dog’s Life 2
Linda asks…
How and what do you feed your dog?
I know the brand of dog food is a pretty common question on here, but I’m more interested in your entire feeding regime.
1. What brand(s) of dog food do you feed your dog?
2. How many times a day do you feed your dog?
3. Do you give your dogs vitamins or supplements? What brand? Do you give them with their dinner or separately?
4. Do you add anything else to your dog’s food (yogurt, table scraps, etc.)?
5. Do you regularly give your dog any snacks apart from their regular feeding time?
6. Do you follow the feeding recommendations of anyone (your vet, a book, etc.)?
Oh, and please no thumbs down. This is an opinion question. The only reason someone can answer wrong is by telling us that they feed rabbits to their alligator (or something else meaningless).
If you feel you must expound on the values of your food or the valuelessness of someone else’s, please do so at the end of your response, not by giving someone a thumbs down.
Here’s my answer:
1. Artemis Fresh Mix
2. Once
3. My old dog gets human-grade glucosamine with chondroitin. They both get a supplement, but no particular brand at the moment (looking for a good brand).
4. Daily: Yogurt, garlic, fish oil. I like to keep a little variety in their foods. I’ll add healthy things that I’m eating or other stuff around: herbal tea, potatoes, meat, orange juice, raw eggs, oatmeal, etc.
5. They get a whole carrot in the morning.
6. I follow (though not strictly) the feeding regime of the Goldesteins in The Goldsteins’ Wellness & Longevity Program (book). This book isn’t very well known, I don’t think, but I was very pleased with it when I read it.

How to come to terms with my dog’s death?
My dog got put down last night at 9.42 pm. He was a West Highland Terrier called Bobby and he meant the world to me. I had him from a pup and I was just 6 years old, I am now almost 20 and it’s really hard.
He was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure a couple of weeks ago, we tried to change his diet and make him comfortable, but he kept losing weight, had a heart murmur and developed anaemia. Last night he was awful, he gained the energy to pick himself up, take himself outside and just stay in the shed by himself. I think he knew it was time for him to go, after rushing back from university yesterday, I looked after him all day, but he didn’t want to eat or drink. Last night he tried to get up again, vomited and collapsed, he never got up. He kept breathing, and wouldn’t give in. I called him and he looked up at me, we had to call the vet. The vet came here, attempted to put my dog down by injecting his veins in both legs, but they kept exploding because they became so thin. Eventually he had an injection in his neck, which knocked him out immediately, still breathing. He had to be rolled over and have a final injection in his heart, this broke me, I was there the whole time and wouldn’t leave my boy for one second. I just broke down crying and grabbed him to cuddle him, we had to put him in a bag and kept him in our shed last night.
We are burying him today and putting a slab over where he is buried saying ‘Bobby’s Patch’. I am absolutely heartbroken. Can anyone offer any advice or support about how to get over a dog’s death. I have to see him again today, to cut a little bit of fur off to keep and use it as part of a collage I will make to celebrate his life. This dog means the world to me, I grew up with him, always been with him. Whenever something was wrong I spoke to him, he has never hurt anything…except cats, he never liked cats. I miss him so much already and go out to stand next to his grave a few times a day. RIP Bobby <3
If anyone would like to share their stories then please do

Collie showing aggression – how do I stop it?
I rescued two pure bred Tri-Colored collies that had been surrendered to a kill shelter. They are both females and raised together (2 1/2 years and 1 1/2 years). One is a rough coat and one is a smooth coat. The smooth has started growling and barking at the rough. She has even attacked her a couple of times. She is fine as long as none of us are near the rough or they are outside together. How do I break her of this? I have two children and don’t want to run the risk of them being in the middle of an attack. Other than the growling and aggression, she is a wonderful dog. Please, any serious (non-violent) advice is appreciated.

Your Questions About Collie Man
Ruth asks…
How do I cope after my dog was put down due to aggression?
I must clarify this dog belonged to my brother and his girlfriend. It was their decision and I disagree with it. I am 20 years old and well aware of the circumstances surrounding their choice. But it was not what I would have done.
Zara was a mix of a collie and labrador. Absolutely lovely dog and always made my day. However, she was always afraid of people. As a pup she used to back away from them. But as she got older she began barking and then lunging. After she tried to bite a friend of my brother’s, my family discussed it and decided it was the safest thing to do as there are many children in the area and it is impossible to keep an eye on her at all times. I was told yesterday evening about the decision and 24 hours later she is gone. I said my goodbyes and I am thankful for that. However, I became so close to the dog I feel quite empty inside knowing that she is gone. I feel I have let her down.
As I have said the decision was not mine and I disagreed with it. I know the reasons behind the decision were valid. I just can’t cope with the fact she is gone. Is there any way to cope with this? Thank you
Also to clarify she has lunged at several people before we have intervened. It was only a matter of time before it happened when nobody was around.
We took her to several behaviour specialists and classes. Nothing was working. This was recommended to us by the local vet.

How do you deal with losing your dog?
My dog is still living, but I am sad to say that she is already 14. She is so very healthy at this age, which is good, I am grateful to have such a healthy dog at such a old age. But, I know that a dog’s life can go downhill fast, and I am scared knowing that she may only have a couple of years left…I dred the day that I will have to say goodbye to her. I don’t want that to happen but I know it will and I don’t know how to deal with it.
She has been my best friend since I was 6 years old and I’ve loved her more than I love myself. Losing her will be like losing everything I have ever known.
How does one cope with losing your best friend? One that’s never judged you and loved you no matter how much the rest of the world hated you? This may be years from now, or it may be in the next few months, but whenever the time comes, I want to know how to deal with it.
Someone with experience in this.
My dad, who lost his dog when he was 15 still cries when he thinks about her. And he never cries, he is also 59. The fact that a tiny animal can carry a persons love after they are gone amazes me.
How can I possibly deal with this when it happens?
Thank you.

Your Questions About Dog’s Life Ending
Laura asks…
Should I have my dog tattooed for identification purposes?
I have been reading about this and it sounds very smart. I read that they give them the same stuff as when they are being spayed to fall asleep. I also read that it takes up to 15 seconds to finish the tattoo.
It will have phone numbers and a addressees. I also read that their is no redness and most peoples dog’s woke up a didn’t even notice. I have a collar with contact information on it to. My dogs stomach does not have any hair on it, so it is just skin. The tattoo will be a little larger than the size of a quarter.
I know of Microchips, but I have been reading a lot of how some dogs became sick or ill from them. It will only take 15 seconds to write contact info and their is no hair on her stomach so it will be very noticeable. I just want to make sure my dog is safe if anything bad happens.

What can I do to help my 1 yr old female blue pit with aggression?
She was spayed over the summer when she was about 6 months old and in her first heat cycle. Yesterday when my husbands friends came over after work as soon as one of the men walked in the house all I heard was barking and growling and then she ran towards him. I have never seen her this way. She’s usually really calm, great with my kids. I don’t want to have her put down I want to work with her. She has only shown aggression in the past when dealing with veterinarians or getting her nails clipped considering she had a traumatic experience at Petco after getting a whole nail cut off by a trainee. I just basically need some advice.
I want to also add that my dog gets adequate exercise. She is fed regularly on top quality food and is very much loved. Never been abused except by her previous owner who had her for the first 4 months of her life. I have also taken her to training classes including a class for just the pitty breed alone. She has interacted with other dogs, cats, children and men.
